Try installing with XFree 3.3.6 or just running XFdrake and choosing a slight back off on your monitor (like "Monitor than can do 1024x768 at 60 Hz") See what happens then. I have a system where the screen jiggles and shakes, apparently when the disk is being accessed. It occurs in frame-buffer and X but not in straight VGA text.
