that's because fdisk creates parts bounded to cyls. a lone cyl has
about 7Mb in the last ide hds, due to the geometry. someday i'll try to
make a non-cyl-bounded part and see if it works...

Lorne, would you please turn off HTML mail for lists, including this one.

Do you mean block or cylinder? Linux' boot partition has to be at
cylinders all less than 1024.

Actually, a 7M partition works great for /boot.
I can't get fdisk to make a smaller one or I'd try it,
since /boot only seems to be using about 2M.

You need to create a 20Mb partition that resides below the 1024th cylinder.
When installing Linux, mount this small partition as /boot.

[expert] system commander

2000-03-20 Thread Lorne Schachter

I'm trying to set up system commander to select my os when I boot (I've
got to use Windows for work occasionally).  My root partition starts
at block 1600 (which is greater that 1023), so everyone has a problem with
it.  Any ideas?
Thanks,
Lorne

[expert] System Commander and Drakx

2000-02-19 Thread silkythreads

Can't get Mandrake 70-2 to boot using System Commander.

During install on drive-XX, I installed lilo to /boot.

I configured SysCdr to look at the /boot partition - my drive # 2.

When starting to boot, I get the deadly "LI". I made sure that the

partition was a bootable partition in SysCdr's setup.

Is this a problem with the BIOS settings and can I make SysCdr

ignore the BIOS or am I completely lost on this ??

My BIOS has a "boot in this order" function and this drive is

not the first in the list but SysCdr should be able to handle that.

My Drakx (DrakeConf) comes up in text mode. I really liked the GUI,
I just upgraded from 70 to 70-2. I want my GUI. How do I get it back
??
