Don't mean to interject, but I'm having a similar problem, only that it did not
work to start with. I was originally running kde (which would be kdm I
suppose) but now run gnome. it's always been the same, just timing out on
searching for a connection. Help?

Try deleting your .Xauthority file and start again..
