James,

Thanks for the info. I think you have hit it right on. After ruling out
most everything else, it seems the install is choking with the ATA 100.
You have the same MOBO, and must have the same bios. I can only find an
entry to enable or disable UDMA. With UDMA disabled, I get mode PIO 4,
and that will not work. Would you be so kind as to tell me how you were
able to go to mode UDMA 3. I have been in my bios many times, and I just
can not see how you did it.

Thanks for the help,

Did you run a checksum on the iso files before burning the CDs ?
md5sum *.iso
Mandrake always has an md5sums file along with the ISO files.

Have you tried hitting CTRL-ALT-F1 to F4. When I installed 8.1, I
figured out that they display messages from the install process and one
of them gives you a prompt.

I downloaded 3 times the cd's from ftp.simauria.upv.es...
6 CD-R are now in the trash.
The problem was: the files in the server are corrupted.
I downloaded the ISOs from another mirror (slow, but secure)
Now I have LM8.1 running :-)

I had the same problems with my install and what worked for me was to set the
bios to boot to cd-rom then turn my computer all the way off and do a cold
boot. The installer seems to get hung when trying to go to the 2nd or 3rd cd
if you do a warm boot reset after setting your bios.

Are you guys checking the md5sums on the iso's? I had to download the .inst
iso image twice before I got a good copy. (2 hours wasted)

What was really weird is after my first download was complete, the file size
in bytes was exactly what it should have been, but when I checked the md5sums
the iso was FUBAR. I downloaded again from the same mirror, got the same file
size, but this time the md5sums matched! I may be wrong, but it sounds like you
may have a corrupt iso.

LILO can't use non-existent BIOS services. Cyl 1024 is a non-issue only
if your BIOS provides the INT13 extensions or if the partition you boot
from does not include cyl 1024 or above.

i'm curious...why would the 1024 cylinder have anything at all to do
with an 8.1 install? that was something specific to the old LILO boot
loader. since the newer versions of LILO no longer suffer from this
problem i fail to see how this would apply.
