For the benefit of anyone who finds this thread via a google search:

1. I installed Mdk Freq 3
2. Forced an install of the stock 386 Redhat 7.1 kernel
3. Installed Clearcase 4.2 (and relinked the mvfs module)
4. Rejoiced loudly when it all worked.

This shouldn't be a problem. Another possibility would be to check out the
patches RH applies to the "pure" kernel, get them and apply them to a kernel
from kernel.org

RE: [expert] ManHat

why not try it? if done properly, you can switch kernels anytime, have them
both setup in Grub or lilo,,,

can't hurt to try it...

You would probably be better switching over to RH7.1 fully. While you
probably can use the RH kernel package, there's no telling which other
capabilities you'll lose.

That's exactly what I did - switched to RH7.1. The thing is,,,I've
been using Mandrake for a long time and I miss it. I think I'm going
to try Mdk with the RH kernel. I was hoping someone knew enough about
mdk internals to surmise whether or not Mandrake-specific apps have
shithooks deep in the (heavily patched) Mdk kernels.
