Dan:

Mine's empty ! I do use the limit command under tcsh to raise memory,
vmemory & datasize limits to unlimited & stacksize to 768432 KB (3/4 of RAM),
but can't address even all of that. Thanks for any more insight.

The kernel is limited by the amount of RAM it is compiled for, and 1G is the
Max. There are enterprise kernels starting with 8.0 that are compiled for up
to 64G

In order to give a single process more RAM than is available, you need a
kernel feature that was not compiled into the 7.x series kernels, If you
have loaded the kernel-headers and kernel-source rpms, open a terminal, su to
root, cd to /usr/src/linux and run 'make mrproper' then 'make xconfig'.

Under "Processor Type and Features"
 "High Memory Support"

This should give you the option to compile for 4G.

Check out
/etc/security/limits.conf

What you are describing is the default behavior for the default kernel.
There is an option when you re-compile the kernel to allow it to address 1
GB of memory or more. If you were running the newer versions of Mandrake
(ie, 8.1), you could simply install the kernel-enterprise rpm. With 7.1,
you'll have to recompile.
