seems you have to find the correct program, i use ksnapshot to capture 
from opengl as well, perhaps it contains some nice feature to access 
overlays.

I just tried this on another machine and experienced the same results as 
you, blank screen. However since this machine was running KDE I tried 
the /usr/bin/ksnapshot and this worked perfectly.
