[FairfieldLife] Post-Katrina plans for New Orleans

2005-09-29 Thread TurquoiseB
President Bush Sells Louisiana Back to the French

BATON ROUGE, LA. - The White House announced today that President
Bush has successfully sold the state of Louisiana back to the French
at more than double its original selling price of $11,250,000.

This is a bold step forward for America, said Bush. And America
will be stronger and better as a result.

I stand here today in unity with French Prime Minister Jack Shalac,
who was so kind to accept my offer of Louisiana in exchange for 25
million dollars cash.

The state, ravaged by Hurricane Katrina, will cost hundreds of
billions of dollars to rebuild.

Jack understands full well that this one's a 'fixer upper,' said
Bush. He and the French people are quite prepared to pump out all
that water, and make Louisiana a decent place to live again. And
they've got a lot of work to do. But Jack's assured me, if it's not
right, they're going to fix it.

The move has been met with incredulity from the beleaguered
residents of Louisiana. However, President Bush's decision has been
widely lauded by Republicans.

This is an unexpected but brilliant move by the President, said
Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist. Instead of spending billions and
billions, and billions of dollars rebuilding the state of Louisiana,
we've just made 25 million dollars in pure profit.

This is indeed a smart move, commented Fox News analyst Brit
Hume. Not only have we stopped the flooding in our own budget,
we've made money on the deal. Plus, when the god-awful French are
done fixing it up, we can easily invade and take it back again.

The money gained from 'The Louisiana Refund' is expected to be
immediately pumped into the rebuilding of Iraq.

I realized that some time back, during the discussions
about 'appreciation.' Some comment by, I think, Tom
made me completely abandon my old paradigm and come up
with a new one that more accurately described my
  subjective experience.

Before. There has never been a moment in my life when

That's the one point on all of this where I think we

First, I see no value in labels such as enlightenment.

Me, either. I was just using the terminology already
being used in these discussions.

 It can create
distinctions, it can creates longing for titles, it can
  create
false egos, it can creates scams, etc. And the upside is?

Giving some people who are anxious for the title
something to do with their time? :-)

  I just never appreciated it
until a three-week period in Fiuggi, when the 24/7 wit-
nessing made it impossible not to appreciate. Since
then, that witnessing has slipped from foreground to
background many times, but what I realized during the
'appreciation' discussion is that it has always been
present. What I realized when I first appreciated it
was that it had *always* been present.

Speaking of which, perhaps someone can comment on an experience
 I've
  had lately:

I've always had a well developed intellect, can think quickly.
However, lately my intellect has literally been operating on a
higher level. I say that because my previous experience of
mental
concentration in order to think something through always felt
like
it was inside my brain, and it took a lot of effort.

My recent experience is that I am thinking *above* my brain.
There
seems to be a location about two hands above my head, wherein if
I
focus my thinking there, my intellect seems to achieve
effortless
  answers to anything.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what this is, or have
heard
of it before? Also feels like I'm wearing a crown, or a halo or
something. Not a big deal, just curious. Thanks-

 Sounds like classic disociation...

Yes, if you haven't experienced it, it does, huh? When I was younger
I used to get spaced out by too much meditation and experience
things that I couldn't integrate. This, by contrast, is something I
can experience, or not, at will. Its usefulness is 100% practical
and fully grounded.

Hagelin would probably have to go with MMY's statement in the SBAL
 (~p.274):

All the innumerable decisions that are apparently the result of
natural laws in the process of evolution are the innumerable
decisions of the almighty personal supreme God at the head of
creation. He governs and maintains the entire field of evolution
and
the different lives of innumerable beings in the whole cosmos.

But to me, this does not look different from seeing the universe
as
run by natural laws, i.e., whether it is a person or laws reacting
to behavior, the outcome looks the same. God is not directing the
activity of creatures, but is reacting to their behavior -- if
somebody smokes cigarettes (like David Lynch with his packaday
habit
after 30+ years of TM), making the body coarse, the reaction is to
create disease which eventually eliminates the body -- this is
natural selection, whether it is done by a person or a set of laws
 operating automatically.

So although Intelligent Design people would probably be satisfied
with MMY's statement (that is, if he wasn't a goldurn Hindu), so
could scientists who see the universe as natural-law-based.

 Bob Brigante
 http://geocities.com/bbrigante

That's what I think, because Maharishi has always talked about 'the
whole is greater than the sum of its parts, which to me suggests
the phenomena of the coexistence of opposite concepts in one place
at the same time. Infitinite parts (or activity) and unity, ie. the
multiplicity of existence and God.
This paradox is impossible to grasp for old school scientists and
for intelligent design proponents.
Ultimately though, I think one must concede to intelligent design.

[FairfieldLife] In a Melting Trend, Less Arctic Ice to Go Around

2005-09-29 Thread akasha_108

September 29, 2005 NYT
In a Melting Trend, Less Arctic Ice to Go Around
By ANDREW C. REVKIN

The floating cap of sea ice on the Arctic Ocean shrank this summer to
what is probably its smallest size in at least a century of record
keeping, continuing a trend toward less summer ice, a team of climate
experts reported yesterday.

That shift is hard to explain without attributing it in part to
human-caused global warming, the team's members and other experts on
the region said.

The change also appears to be headed toward becoming self-sustaining:
the increased open water absorbs solar energy that would otherwise be
reflected back into space by bright white ice, said Ted A. Scambos, a
scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo.,
which compiled the data along with the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration.

Feedbacks in the system are starting to take hold, Dr. Scambos said.

The data was released on the center's Web site, www.nsidc.org.

The findings are consistent with recent computer simulations showing
that a buildup of smokestack and tailpipe emissions of greenhouse
gases could lead to a profoundly transformed Arctic later this
century, when much of the once ice-locked ocean would routinely become
open water in summers.

Expanding areas of open water in the summer could be a boon to whales
and cod stocks, and the ice retreat could create summertime shipping
shortcuts between the Atlantic and the Pacific.

But a host of troubles lie ahead as well. One of the most important
consequences of Arctic warming will be increased flows of meltwater
and icebergs from glaciers and ice sheets, and thus an accelerated
rise in sea levels, threatening coastal areas. The loss of sea ice
could also hurt both polar bears and Eskimo seal hunters.

The Arctic ice cap always grows in the winter and shrinks in the
summer. The average minimum area from 1979, when precise satellite
mapping began, until 2000 was 2.69 million square miles, similar in
size to the contiguous area of the United States. The new summer low,
measured on Sept. 19, was 20 percent below that.

Before 1979, scientists estimated the size of the ice cap based on
reports from ships and airplanes.

The difference between the average ice area and the area that
persisted this summer was about 500,000 square miles, an area about
twice the size of Texas, the scientists said.

This summer was the fourth in a row with the ice cap areas sharply
below the long-term average, said Mark C. Serreze, a senior scientist
at the snow and ice center and a professor at the University of
Colorado, Boulder.

Dr. Scambos said the consecutive reductions in the ice cap make it
pretty certain a long-term decline is under way.

A natural cycle in the polar atmosphere called the Arctic oscillation,
which contributed to the reduction in Arctic ice in the past, did not
appear to be a factor in the past several years, Dr. Serreze said.

He said the role of accumulating greenhouse gas emissions had become
increasingly apparent with rising air and sea temperatures. Still,
many scientists say it is not yet possible to determine what portion
of Arctic change is being caused by rising levels of carbon dioxide
and other emissions from human sources and how much is just climate's
usual wiggles.

Dr. Serreze and other scientists said that more variability could lie
ahead and that the area of sea ice could actually increase some years.
But the scientists have found few hints that other factors, like more
Arctic cloudiness in a warming world, will reverse the trend.

With all that dark open water, you start to see an increase in Arctic
Ocean heat storage, Dr. Serreze said. Come autumn and winter that
makes it a lot harder to grow ice, and the next spring you're left
with less and thinner ice. And it's easier to lose even more the next
year.

The result, he said, is that the Arctic is becoming a profoundly
different place than we grew up thinking about.

Other experts on Arctic ice and climate disagreed on details. For
example, Ignatius G. Rigor at the University of Washington said the
change was probably linked to a mix of factors, including influences
of the atmospheric cycle.

But he agreed with Dr. Serreze that the influence from greenhouse
gases had to be involved.

The global warming idea has to be a good part of the story, Dr.
Rigor said. I think we have a different climate state in the Arctic
now. All of these feedbacks are starting to kick in and really
snuffing the ice out by the end of summer.

Other experts expressed some caution. Claire L. Parkinson, a sea ice
expert at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., said a
host of changes in the Arctic - including rising temperatures, melting
permafrost and shrinking sea ice - were consistent with human-caused
warming. But she emphasized that the complicated system was still far
from completely understood.

Urbana-Champaign,

First wife of late Beatle attempts to set the record straight

By CNN's Gordon Isfeld

Thursday, September 29, 2005; Posted: 6:05 a.m. EDT (10:05 GMT)

Cynthia Lennon says the time is right to set the record straight.

LONDON, England (CNN) -- Long before anyone was called the fifth Beatle,
Cynthia Powell could rightfully have claimed the title for her own.

It wasn't Stu Sutcliffe -- the Liverpool artist and best friend of John
Lennon -- who died shortly after leaving the group, nor George Martin,
though his talent as a producer helped open the door to the group's
creativity.

Nor was it Yoko Ono -- seemingly attached to John at the hip during the
group's twilight years. And not Billy Preston, whose keyboard talents can be
heard on The Beatles' later recordings and in their last live performance.

Instead, it was a quiet-spoken, middle-class woman from a northern England
suburb. It was there, as a teenager attending art school, that she met and
fell in love with an equally young student who was destined to become one of
the most famous pop artists in history.

Cynthia was in the mix long before she became Mrs. Lennon, when the Beatles
were not even a concept. And she was with John through the group's delirious
ride through fame -- drugs, meditation and all.

And now, more than 35 years after her painful divorce from John and 25 years
after his death, Cynthia Lennon has published John -- a book she says
needed to be written to erase the misconceptions left by other books about
John, their 1962-1969 marriage and the Beatles.

The only way you can get the truth is from the inside, not the outside,
she said. I feel the time is right.

Lennon -- speaking Wednesday at the Foreign Press Association in London
--said she also wrote the book for their son, Julian, who she maintains has
been very scared by life.

I was trying to give him some more of a sense of being John's son. Asked
for Julian's reaction to the book, she replied: I'm still waiting for it.

Lennon, who now lives in Spain with her fourth husband, said she was
prepared to continue waiting until Julian's ready to talk. The comment goes
a long way to explaining the character of a woman often portrayed as weak
and victimized.

I'm not passive, I'm patient, said Lennon when asked why she put up with
John's verbal abuse, heavy drug use and long absences from the family home.

But I would not put up with physical abuse, she said, a reference to the
new book's description -- absent from her 1978 book, A Twist of Lennon --
of John striking her in a fit of jealousy after he saw Cynthia and Sutcliffe
dancing.

John was always insecure, she said, having come from a broken family and
losing his mother at a young age.

He was brought up by his aunt Mimi, described as insensitive and
overbearing, who took John into her home even before his mother's death.
Mimi had a lot to answer for ... She stopped John from being with his

Cynthia also felt the wrath of Mimi, who is now dead. It was a very
difficult relationship, she told reporters. What little love she had for
John, she had even less for me.

John goes beyond her first book, adding details of John's post-divorce
relationship with Julian, and her son's relationship with Ono. It also talks
about the impact of John's murder by a deranged fan in 1980.

Paul McCartney comes in for some rare praise from someone once in the
Beatles' inner circle. Lennon's former songwriting partner paid Cynthia an
unexpected visit shortly after the divorce, offering his support for her and
a song for Julian, Hey Jude.

For only the second time during Wednesday's news conference, Cynthia's eyes
watered over as she described the joy she still feels each time she hears
what has become a Beatles' anthem that was written for her son.

The first sign of tears came earlier on as she acknowledged the up-coming
25th anniversary of John's death on December 8. (The singer, incidentally,
would have been 65 on October 9.)

Asked later if she has forgiven John for the pain he caused, she simply
offered of course.

Then she added: There are worse things in life than divorce.

An important distinction that is often lost on those
who have spent decades immersed in the TM metaphors
of stress and knots of stress and unstressing,
none of which actually exist, or were ever barriers
to the realization of enlightenment.

[FairfieldLife] Concise Minds, Concise Posts

2005-09-29 Thread akasha_108
I am sure some do indeed trace through poster IDs 10 levels deep, but
I think they are in the outer regions of the solar system.

Perhaps we could all trim posts down to ESSENTIAL antecedants. I mean
conciseness IS an attribute of good writing.

Conciseness as well as cleanliness are next to godliness.

Is constant foreground PC a sufficnet criteria
  for CC?

 That's how MMY defines it (if it's permanent);
witnessing can apply to temporary experiences
 (CC being 24-hour permanent witnessing).

It's a symbol, but for a very specific
experience. I don't see that your four-
letter job is any better, as long as we
know what the definition of CC is.

That's all I'm saying. I agree with you
that a lot of the other terms are problematic.

Good.

But what is your definition of CC? (but define it in
a
  non-
seeking way :) )

In my understanding of how MMY uses the term, CC
   is permanent, 24-hour-a-day foreground PC.

Can you now get universal consensus on this list for
 that
definition?

If I'm representing MMY's definition correctly,
I ought to be able to, at least from those who
recall MMY's teaching. Corrections to my
understanding of how MMY uses the term are
   welcome.

   I'm only suggesting it because it's a term we're
all familiar with, and it's not a complicated
   definition.

  Downright simplistic, in fact. :-)

 Suitable for beginners, true.

Suitable for experts, too...just incomplete, as
any definition of the undefinable would be. It's
sorta like defining an orange as a round fruit.
There's more to it than that...

And what is the it you believe the definition in
question refers to for which I'm proposing the term
   CC be used as shorthand?

It is the seed in a seedless orange, of course. :-)

 Wrongaroonie. Try again.

Oh. I didn't realize it was a Quiz Show. Sorry.

Is this Wheel Of Karma, that show where the person
who has never experienced clear, sustained, 24/7
witnessing gets to define it, and its relationship
to enlightenment as a whole, for those who have?

I'd watch, but Jerry Springer is on the other
channel... :-)

My point is that you've gotten yourself into
yet another infinite regress when you prescribe
appreciating the Now.

Some Suggestions on How to Appreciate the Now:

   1) Pay attention to whatever is in front of us. How
are
 we
feeling? If we feel good, the exercise is done. If
not,
  try
   step 2.

It would be better if I felt good.

And so how do we feel? Not-good? Is that the same as bad?
 What
kind of bad? Itchy? Weepy? Stubborn? Guilty? Angry? Not-
 good
  is
a good start, but perhaps let's dig a little deeper,
taking
  our
time, allowing it to breathe. Where in the body would it
be,
  if
 it were in the body?

Another very useful technique, with the limitation
inherent in any technique. It must actually be
practiced, not just read and discarded.

Yes indeedydoo. If we're not appreciating the Now,
and we think it would be better if we did, we should
practice this technique so we can get rid of all
those nasty obstacles sitting there in the way.

   horselaugh

*lol* I like your laugh. No, it is not to get rid of the
obstacles at all; it is to refine our attention sufficiently to
appreciate them and integrate them as aspects of our
Wholeness. :-)

Yes indeedydoo. If we aren't sufficiently appreciating
the obstacles to be able to integrate them as aspects of
our Wholeness, and we think it would be better if we did,
we should practice this technique to get rid of all the
nasty obstacles to that appreciation and integration
 sitting there in the way.

Think infinite regress, Rory. Think going around in
 circles.

Ask yourself whether there might be something just a bit
peculiar about the concept of a technique to enable
 us to appreciate the Now.

Yes, Judy, I am familiar with your infinite regress argument -- it
just doesn't apply here, at least in any meaningful way. The fact
is, these techniques do work, if we really feel we have a sincere
need or desire to grow.

The truth is, of course, there *is* no growth; we *are* throroughly
enjoying the Now, always have been, always will be. I was using a
spacetime perspective to communicate with any small portion of Us
which might still believe itself trapped in those illusory
limitations. But I am happy if you are -- and even if you aren't :-)

Yes, Judy, I am familiar with your infinite regress argument --

it just doesn't apply here, at least in any meaningful way. The
fact is, these techniques do work, if we really feel we have a
sincere need or desire to grow.

But that's yet another iteration of the regress.
Desire to grow and appreciate the Now are
mutually exclusive, not just intellectually but
 experientially.

I appreciate how it could look like this intellectually, and how it
is evidently your experience, but I don't find it to be the case
intellectually or experientially at all. Part of the paradox, I
suppose.

Each is valid on its own level, but as long as
you're doing one, you aren't doing the other.

That's why this kind of thing has never worked
 for me.

I can see the appeal of this belief-system. It is nice and neat, and
saves us the trouble of having to take any personal responsibility
for our perceptions :-)

Ah! Fodder for Rick and his fascination with all the
kiss-and-tell babes with regard to Maharishi. Perhaps
all that ever happened was that he tried to tell them
something about themselves they didn't want to hear,
and in their minds, that became rape.

Not really. The real-life model for my made-up
 Springer character and *her* infinitely-repeating
tales of woe are much more boring than the fictional
 version.

The problem with watching too much TV is that you
start creating your own fantasies and mistaking them
for real life.

Why anyone would want to create *boring* fantasies
is another question entirely. But I guess maybe
real life is just too challenging for some.

   and therapist as the rapist.

It would be fascinating if it weren't so scary.
A self so terrified of losing itself that it
  sees Self as attempted rape.

Well, it's just another story -- one I can certainly relate and
relate to, as it has seemed that way to me sometimes :-)

I guess I was fortunate, in that none of the experiences
in my life of self dropping away and leaving only Self have
had the least bit of dread or resistance associated with
them. Interestingly enough, it was the same with acid,
back in my hippie days. Everyone I knew had at least
one bummer, in which the fear of losing self became so
predominant that the person freaked out. Me, for what-
ever reason, I just went with it and had great unity exper-
iences. Go figure.

All this brou-ha-ha (ha ha) has made me remember a great
rap by the Rama fellow I studied with, dealing with this
same subject:

At the border of nirvana there's a crossing. And
when you reach the border of nirvana, someone will
come up to you and inform you that if you enter into
nirvana everything that you've ever loved will be
lost. You will be alone. There will be the most
terrible aloneness that you can imagine. You will
be alienated from everything, including yourself,
forever. A sense of drifting in a cold, desolate
space forever.

At that moment, O nobly-born, all the images from
all of your lives will come forward and will demand
your attention. They will say, 'Don't cross over there.
You will lose us and you will be sorrowful and empty
and void.'

If you listen to what that fellow at the border
tells you, then you won't cross over. You'll go
back to all the things that have bound you and
limited you also. You'll go back to both because
in the world of duality you have the pairs of
opposites.

If you listen to me, which no one does, fortunately,
I would suggest that it's not like that at all.
That when that fellow comes up to you and warns you
against crossing the border, you'll say, 'Listen,
several lifetimes ago I read one of Rama's books and
while he very rarely says anything of any value
whatsoever, there was one point he made which I put
on a 3x5 file card which I happen to have in my back
pocket. And I was going to review it because he said
I'd run into you. I didn't actually believe it at the
time but now that I've run into you I just happen to
have this file card tucked away here and I'd like
to examine it for a moment, if you don't mind.'

And of course he'll say, 'We don't have time, the
worlds are turning, existence is manifesting...'
And you'll say, 'Just a minute!'

You'll take out your faded 3x5 file card, it's a few
lifetimes old -- actually, it would be better if you
had a plastic one which you had laser engraved, because
as we all know plastic lasts forever -- and it says,
'DON'T LISTEN.' Hopefully, it will be in the right
language.

Don't listen because in nirvana it's not like that.
It's not empty or cold or barren. You don't remember
that the ecstasy and completion of absorption in God
is so fantastic that you can't possibly have lost
anything because all the things you've always loved
and always experienced came forth from there and exist
there and are always there.

Yes. Only the mind thinks THAT is empty and cold and barren, while *at
