And, as the token Frenchie here, I agree with you. Comments below... > ---Original Message--- > "France has neither winter nor summer nor morals. Apart from > these drawbacks it is a fine country. France has usually been > governed by prostitutes." Mark Twain. All true. Morals are for spiritual and evolutionary adolescents. More evolved folk rely on ethics. Morality is an attempt to impose a description of right and wrong on people from the outside, in the form of accepted and acceptable codes of conduct. Ethics comes from the inside out; you act according to your intuition, secure in the belief that most of the time its promptings are more in tune with things than an old, crusty codified system of laws and guidelines. Prostitutes, as a result of their experience with the distinction between morals and ethics, are probably the people most fit to govern. :-) > - > "I would rather have a German division in front of me than > a French one behind me." While these snipes are deserved, it is worthwhile for Americans, who after all sat back behind the protective wall of 3000 miles of ocean in a land that had never had a war fought on its own territory, to remember the actual circumstances leading up to France's capitulation in WWII. During the first 2-3 months of the war, France lost more men than America lost during the *entire* war. Their population was essentially decimated. They were clearly outclassed by the more advanced and more tech- savvy German army; it was no contest. So they gave up and waited for a better day, rather than lose *all* of their fighting men. Again, it's something Americans, with their short view of history (200 years or so) don't understand. Europeans have seen their countries become conquerors or conquered dozens of times over the centuries, and know that neither condition is lasting. Sometimes it's better to allow the predators to take over for a short while, marshalling one's strength while waiting for a more opportune time to fight. > > "We can stand here like the French, or we can do something > about it." Marge Simpson This is clearly ingorance of the true nature of the French. Whatever the waiting situation was, they would not be standing, but sitting in a comfortable cafe. > - > "As far as I'm concerned, war always means failure" Jacques > Chirac, President of France "As far as France is concerned, > you're right." IMO war *does* always connote failure. > - > "The only time France wants us to go to war is when the > German Army is sitting in Paris sipping coffee." Regis Philbin. The German army sipping coffee in Paris is, however, the reason that Paris still looks like Paris. Other- wise, it would have been destroyed. Me, I think in the long run it was a wise course of action...allow the Nazi closet cases to strut around like winners for three years or so while you're biding your time and waiting for the right moment to send them home where they belong. > - > "The French are a smallish, monkey-looking bunch and not > dressed any better, on average than the citizens of Baltimore. The first of these witticisms that is clearly untrue. At least in Paris, the French know how to dress and how to keep themselves fit. Your average American tourist there looks like a dumpling dressed in K-mart blue light specials by comparison. :-) > True, you can sit outside in Paris and drink little cups > of coffee, but why this is more stylish than sitting inside > and drinking large glasses of whisky I don't know." John McCain, U.S. Senator from Arizona. Absolutely true. No rebuttal offered, because it IS true. On the other hand, using the same metaphor, America is the aging starlet who never had more than a minor role in any of her films, 30 years ago, but talks about her time as a "star" incessantly. > - > "You know why the French don't want to bomb Saddam Hussein? > because he hates America, he loves mistresses and wears a beret. > He i

[FairfieldLife] Happy Turkeyradiance Day
Happy Turkey Transcendence Day. Yesterday. Hope everyone had lots to eat, and nobody had upset stomachs or headaches from super high sodium. My boss is a seeming human and takes all the holidays off. It's whack! I got to set myself up the whole dollar. I ate at the in-laws and the food was perfect. All my favorite New Orleans stuff like of course the turk, stuf, grav an cran, and praline sweet potatoes, artichoke caserole, that was enough already. as it was C cooked so many little side dishes she even forgot a couple, like the choucroute,in the mike and fridge! I brought a yule log made from angel food and whipped cream with strawberrys sliced in it and a bit of jack daniels. E points out later that her mom sneakily keeps the left over cake while giving the rest of the leftovers away. That's ok cause I really made the dessert for E's mom anyway because she likes feathery light stuff the most. Thanksgiving in Metairie. We were thinking about being 40 percent of the population where entire very rich city populations with local color galore still did not exist again since Katrina, in the city, and without as well, all the way to our previous favorite spots in the Panhandle like Santa Rosa island near Ft. Walton. They had imported white sand from Australia, before, not so sure now. Not sure if The Docks - the bar at the beach, ever came back or had been destroyed again even, or what. This morning My wife E, hasn't yet worked up the nerve to fight the mob at the Outlet mall but will soon. I have nothing to do in the whole world. I'll just tag along for the ride, in my new Honda Civic, with built in subwoofer. I been listening to soul untiil my wife is blue in the face with it. She say, can you turn that shit down please. She actually finally turned sick. Not from the music I'm sure, but probably just eating too mch. We normally eat pretty light. I ate much more than I thought I would and then I couldn't keep my eyes open and conked out almost at the table. Naw, she was psychic, the FEMA inspector just called and said he had to come tomorrow. No lie. They had called earlier this morning to see if we wanted a trailer. We said no. My wife can't believe one of her rich bosses got one, to live in for two nights when their floors are being redone. Later we went and saw Harry Potters' Hot Goblet, and I couldn't keep my eyes open again. Yesterday. I was listening to En Vogues new album with a bit different line up. They sould like angels at the gates of heaven. Today things aren't moving very fast. Like in general. Sometimes I feel like I'm swimming in slow motion or backwards or under water in a cheap old black and white film. It's really easy to drive by houses that have fallen to pieces under their own weight, whole neighborhoods that might be tomorrow's interstate. One gets used to destruction. I always wondered what it was like in Bosnia where the city was raining debris continually from the non-stop shelling for years. I used to think, "Poor women and little children." Living in a disaster zone sort of absolves one from needing to dream of serving others finally. One's hold on time immedifies (new word). The past is gone, the future is blank, and the present is all that there is really. I hear that most of the chicks in the city are pretty randy and if I weren't married then any evening could provide some comfort. Instead, in whatsoever a small way I have friends that love to describe their horny histrionics sans palliative, so it's as if one is there anyway. Somewhere within here I'm doing something, if even its trying to ignore that I might be becoming readdicted to smoking again. I'm truely just writing to pass the time. Fuck it. I'm going for a smoke. Damnit. Little children, dont follow my examples. To subscribe, send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Or go to: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FairfieldLife/ and click 'Join This Group!' Thank you, I think. Or maybe not. All this isn't anywhere near as esoteric as it may sound; it's really not much more than common sense and paying attention. As I said in a follow- up post, many here do superbly well in these respects, IMHO. It isn't a matter of being "well versed"; any reasonably literate person is aware of this stuff more or less instinctively, whether they use fancy names for it or not. But too many times we go off on unproductive tangents because somebody hasn't bothered to put much effort into thinking through what they have to say or communicating it clearly. They're more interested in showing off or playing games or constructing a clever putdown, or they're just plain lazy. No doubt I'm guilty of this myself from time to time. > Ken > > > --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, "authfriend" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > A major part of the difficulty in talking about > > enlightenment, it seems to me, is that folks-- > > *especially* you, Barry--don't bother to think > > through what they're saying. > > > > Describing enlightenment is problematic enough > > when you knock yourself out to be precise in the > > way you use words. Well, I don't see it as a "problem" either way. It's just that Fairfield is not on my list of places I'd like to visit, and satsang is not on my list of things I'm particularly interested in doing. > I've read here that there's a big difference between having these discussions in person with > awakened people and doing it in writing like this. I assumed that this difference is what lay > behind L B's suggestion that you visit Fairfield. I'm sure there's a huge difference, and for those to whom it's important to engage in such discussions at the most profound levels, no doubt they could do a lot worse than attending Fairfield satsangs. But it's just not my bag, not part of my sadhana, so to speak. Chatting in electronic forums is fun, but I don't regard it as "pursuing truth" in any significant sense, at least not for me personally. If I had the opportunity to be in the relatively intimate company of (i.e., in a room with as opposed to in a big hall with), say, Maharishi or Mother Meera, and it was relatively easy for me to get to, I might well take it. But that would be more for the darshan than the satsang, if I can make such a distinction. I wouldn't exert myself to go see Amma, though, or any other "saint" I can think of offhand. *Maybe* Adi Da. (Obviously it's unlikely I'd ever get that opportunity, but just hypothetically, as a measure of my interest level.) Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~--> Get fast access to your favorite Yahoo! Groups. I wish to share a general comment on freewill and enlightenment that came up a few days ago under this subject line. THis comment is not aimed at anyone in particular so please take it as that. To understand this completely you need to break the word freewill into its component parts. FREE Enlightenment is absolutely free, it will only cost you every single concept you have ever had about it. WILL Enlightenment will happen, bend over. Tom T Yahoo!
