The question is, how do we get to fewer guns? Given the country's history, and
the Second Amendment, and the current political situation, it's much, much more
complicated than you might think.

It'll come down to the will of the people. If the debate really is as polarised
as it gets reported over here then I suspect you've got an uphill struggle.
Look at the lame excuses people post on here!

I can't much believe in the concept of "the will of the people" when it comes
to the United States. The country is simply no longer a participatory
democracy. It has one of the lowest voter turnout rates among world
democracies, and when people do vote, they don't get what they voted for
because of all the corruption and lobbying by corporate interests.

Plus, "the people" are too self-serving and self-involved to ever take the
kinds of actions that cause governments to listen to them. No one ever goes on
strike unless they're a member of some union that keeps their paychecks coming
in while they're on strike. Unlike, say, France, where when the guvmint does
something they don't like they just declare a General Strike and *no one* goes
to work. The whole country just stops dead -- no trains, no buses, no trucks,
no airplanes, nothing. And the country *stays* stopped until the guvmint caves
to the will of the people.

I simply do not believe this kind of "go on strike and miss a few paychecks for
the good of *all* of us" thinking is even POSSIBLE in the U.S. any more. Polls
indicate that the vast majority of the people want something done about the
murderous situation they have created in their own streets, but "the people"
are such self-serving sheep that they'd literally rather die in the tens of
thousands every year from guns than do anything about it.

So they go out and buy guns of their own and wear them the same way Catholics
wear St. Christopher medals, as if the guns were some kind of talisman that was
going to protect them. Americans are so stupid that they consider their guns a
form of Woo Woo.

I can't see people handing over the weapons if they can't be sure the guy on
the other side of the tracks has done it too. Guns are so ingrained in your
culture people might get anxious at the thought of losing what they see as
their right to protect themselves.

One of the reasons an armed police force has been resisted over here is that if
the average plod was habitually armed all the criminals would be too and then
you'll get an arms race on the streets, we know that shooting someone is easy,
and the public will clamour for the right to protect themselves too. sooner or
later we end up like LA.

The lid is kept on it somehow with police armed response units being instantly
ready as fights between drug gangs for instance are getting more violent, but
shooting on the streets is still a thankfully rare thing over here.

Miss Klass, a former singer with the pop group Hear'Say, was in her kitchen in
the early hours of Friday when she saw two teenagers behaving suspiciously in
her garden.

The youths approached the kitchen window, before attempting to break into her
garden shed, prompting Miss Klass to wave a kitchen knife to scare them away.

Miss Klass, 31, who was alone in her house in Potters Bar, Herts, with her
two-year-old daughter, called the police. When they arrived at her house they
informed her that she should not have used a knife to scare off the youths

[FairfieldLife] Mindfulness; the Guru as mantra - Let 'er rip, or not?

2014-05-28 Thread fleetwood_macnche...@yahoo.com [FairfieldLife]
I was thinking about those here, that I know of - Barry, Barry2, and Anne - who
have closely studied with a guru, or spiritual teacher, and how the concept,
the practice of mindfulness, makes a lot of sense, in that context.

As I have expressed before, I am not a big fan of mindfulness, as a meditation
practice, on its own, eyes open, or closed, because to my way of thinking, it
puts the cart before the horse. However, I can see the strong value in having a
spiritual teacher that a person actually has a personal relationship with,
combined with mindfulness.

That way, the teacher is functioning, much like the correct use of the mantra,
in TM - bringing the student to subtler levels and experiences, without the
student having a say, in where they want to go (aka, take it easy, take it as
it comes). Breaks boundaries, quickly.

Seems to me, that the advantage, of a personal relationship, with a spiritual
teacher, combined with mindfulness, if done right, would be big, dramatic
breakthroughs, in many, many areas - much faster, than the gradual 'erosion' of
the mantra - though possible not as comprehensive, either...Both of the Barrys
have mentioned significant interactions, as a result of, both, their attention,
or mindfulness, on where the guru was pointing, in addition to the strength of
the experience, itself, as a result of the guru's proximity.

A risky spiritual investment, with a potentially huge upside, and downside - an
interesting way to roll.

Barrys and Anne (and anyone else), any insights, comments, peanuts, popcorn,
confetti, fun-fetti, hair-in-a-can, or spare change??

[FairfieldLife] Any dead people in the Dome?

2014-05-28 Thread s3raph...@yahoo.com [FairfieldLife]

From The Daily Telegraph: Indian court asked to rule on whether Hindu guru
dead or meditating The family and followers of one of India's wealthiest Hindu
spiritual leaders are fighting a legal battle over whether he is dead or simply
in a deep state of meditation.

His Holiness Shri Ashutosh Maharaj, the founder of the Divya Jyoti Jagrati
Sansthan religious order with a property estate worth an estimated £100
million, died in January, according to his wife and son.

However, his disciples at his Ashram have refused to let the family take his
body for cremation because they claim he is still alive.

According to his followers, based in the Punjab city of Jalandhar, he simply
went into a deep Samadhi or meditation and they have frozen his body to
preserve it for when he wakes from it.

His body is currently contained in a commercial freezer at their Ashram.
The late – or living – guru, who was in his seventies, established his sect in
1983 to promote "self-awakening to global peace" and to create a world "wherein
every individual becomes an embodiment of truth, fraternity and justice through
the eternal science of self-realisation".
While he is thought to have died from a heart attack, his devotees believe he
has simply drifted into a deeper form of the meditation he promotes as a
pathway to self-realisation.
A statement on the group's website reads: "His Holiness Shri Ashutosh Maharaj
ji has been in deep meditative state (Samadhi) since 29th January 2014."
According to one of his aides, who asked not to be named, "Maharaj has been in
deep meditation. He has spent many years meditating in sub-zero temperatures in
the Himalayas, there is nothing unusual in it. He will return to life as soon
as he feels and we will ensure his body is preserved until then", he said.
His body is held in a guarded room in a deep freezer on his 100 acre retreat
in Nurmahal, Jalandhar, where only a few elders and sect doctors are allowed to
enter.
Although Punjab Police initially confirmed his death, the Punjab High Court
later dismissed its status report and local governmental officials said it was
a spiritual matter and that the guru's followers cannot be forced to believe he
is dead.
Now his wife and son have filed a court application calling for an
investigation into the circumstances of his death and for his body to be
released for cremation.

True. And it's still badly written. As an editor, would you let that sentence

The 2nd Amendment is badly written and is itself in need of amendment. I agree
with Justice John Paul Stevens who would amend it thus: “A well regulated

individuals to carry whatever arms they choose. It is a collective right, not

No doubt many other people in high leadership positions do TM.

It's not that far-fetched to expect more world leaders to learn TM in the
future, as the research showing that TM has unique effects, continues to be
published.

[FairfieldLife] Re: Scorpionland Style Parking

2014-05-28 Thread s3raph...@yahoo.com [FairfieldLife]
Plod are bit thick sometimes. This story is from a few years back but shows how
the police care more for the crooks than the victims . . .

When they arrived at her house they
informed her that she should not have used a knife to scare off the youths
because carrying an "offensive weapon" – even in her own home – was illegal.

I must say that sometimes the authorities in Merrye Olde Scorpion lande are
rather an odd bunch. I remember back a few years ago reading a BBC news item
about a reclusive and according to the man's neighbors, not a very friendly
chap who was in his farmhouse when two Irish travelers broke into his place. He
shot them both and killed one, who as it happened was about 16 or 17.

Ah yes, Tony Martin. Bit of a folk hero for some. But was found guilty of
murder. We are allowed to defend ourselves using reasonable force even if
someone dies, it's up to the jury to decide. In this case they thought that
shooting people three times was excessive and he probably intended to kill them
but he got his sentence reduced to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished
responsibility on appeal. Which sounds about right to me.

Martin had an illegal shotgun and not even a license for his legal one. I
think the answer is that if you break into someone's home you have to accept
they might be a paranoid and lonely old man with a collection of illegal
weapons. But there's always a few who will try it on.

Both these intruders had criminal records a mile long, yet the authorities
arrested the farmer and convicted him of killing the boy. He didn't have to do
too much time just a few years, yet while he was incarcerated, the local
geniuses who run things decided to locate one of the obligatory Irish
traveler's camps within a mile of this man's farm. This after a number of the
travelers had threatened this man with Grievous Bodily Harm during his trial,
and said they were going to get him one way or another.

He's now got a price on his head and lives at a secret address apparently.

The whole issue is fraught with difficulty for the law, we really don't want
to end up like america with "armed response" signs on every lawn and loaded
semi-automatics by the bedside. Madness lies that way. But the other side is
that if someone attacks you and you defend yourself you automatically get
arrested, which obviously annoys a lot of people.

I think the law is being changed now to favour homeowners - or anyone who gets
attacked anywhere - more. It must be frightening to live in a big house in the
country and get burglars all the time but shooting people is still out of the
question. Easiest way to scare people off I would have thought...

It was reported in the article that this man was very reclusive and didn't
like dealing with other people, especially on his property. So out of concern
that the travelers who now had a legal camp just a mile or so from the man's
farm, the local authorities decided to locate a police substation staffed with
a couple officers right outside the man's house!! I guess Scorpion land
policing and governmental thinking are different.

 Sounds rather disconnected...

Homework, Share, do your homework. Lots of info on the Web about militias in
the U.S., as well as--as I said--about how the Second Amendment is interpreted.
You would also learn that the Bill of Rights was proposed and passed well after
the Revolutionary War was history, and what the real reasons for the Second
Amendment were (which may surprise you).

I haven't drunk tequila or smoked pot in over 35 years.

India hardly qualifies as a "true Superpower."

This claim that Modi is a TM'er is sketchy at best and is only being claimed by
the TM Movement itself. No news organization independent of the Movement has
said a damn thing about his being a TM meditator. As usual the Movement is
using a thin excuse to bolster itself and try to make itself look good.

And as is the case with D Lynch, Russell Brand and Howard Stern the association
is ironic and yet appropo at the same time. How so, you ask?

This Modi is, among other things, a rabid Hindu nationalist, who has been
accused of encouraging ethnic cleansing against the Muslims in the Gujarat
riots of 2002.

To wit:
Mr Modi has for the most part used his reign over Gujarat cannily. But
what took place just after he came to office still casts a long shadow.
On February 27th 2002, Muslims in the Gujarati town of Godhra set fire
to a train carrying Hindu pilgrims back from Ayodhya, a town in Uttar
Pradesh where, a decade before, the destruction of a mosque triggered
nationwide riots that killed 2,000. Fifty-nine men, women and children
died on the train; nine years later 31 people were convicted of a
“planned conspiracy” to burn it.

After the attack on the train Hindu groups in Gujarat immediately called a
bandh—a strike-cum-protest. Days of bloodshed, rape and torture followed, with
weeks of further sporadic attacks on Muslims. Over 1,000 died, some
18,000 homes were destroyed and around 200,000 Muslims displaced.

On
February 28th an attack on the home of Ehsan Jafri, a former Congress
MP, killed Mr Jafri and 68 others. On the same day at least 96 were
killed in Naroda Patiya, a Muslim part of Ahmedabad, Gujarat’s largest
city.

In many places the police either did nothing to protect the
victims or, according to Human Rights Watch, an American advocacy group,
“actively supported” the massacres. Where the police did their jobs, in
southern Gujarati towns like Surat, no one died.

Mr Modi could have forbidden the bandh; he could have quickly ordered a curfew;
he could have compelled the police to
act. He did none of those things. Nor did he call in the national police force
or the army soon enough. India’s human-rights commission
described the response by the state government as a “comprehensive
failure”.

The BJP’s leader wanted to sack him (it was Mr Advani,
ironically, who saved his skin). In 2005 America revoked Mr Modi’s visa, on the
basis that “he was responsible for the performance of state
institutions” in the riots. Some say he was more directly culpable,

Critics say that attempts to apportion blame by India’s courts were
obstructed by the authorities in Gujarat, with charges badly filed,
minutes of crucial government meetings either missing or never kept, and
evidence destroyed.

A special-investigations team of the Supreme Court last year cleared him of 30
allegations made by Mr Jafri’s widow and others. It rejected
testimony that he had told police not to confront Hindu mobs, ruling one

after others contradicted him. Other claims along the same lines were
ruled out as hearsay.

Barry, I got to hand it to you. When people say "America, love it or
leave it", you did and I appreciate that! I hope I'm not compelled
to do the same some day.

It was my call, and I certainly don't regret it. Especially when
reading the real news articles and real statistics that led to The
Onion writing this article.

I mean, Americans live in a society in which they are killing each
other in numbers that are simply not seen in other economically
developed parts of the world, and they feel helpless because don't
think they can do anything about it. And yet they believe they live
in a democracy.

When are people in America going to stand up and say, "Our dead kids
DO trump your Constitutional right to have a gun"? After all,
according to a study from the Yale School of Medicine, over 10,000
children under the age of 20 are hospitalized or killed by guns in
America every year. Of that number about 3,500 of them die of their
injuries.

Do the math. That's a lot of dead kids so that people can own a
penis substitute.

Sorry Turq, I'm with Mike on this one, not as if I haven't said so
before. Besides, we're not exactly dodging bullets every day.
Besides, what about knives? Should we ban them too? After all the
Santa Barbara kid killed half his victims with a knife. That's
probably why the liberal community has shifted the discussion from
guns to mental health. So you may be a bit off script. ;-)

Don't get me wrong...I am not suggesting that there are any easy
solutions. You guys got yourselves into this mess with your frontier
"My gun is my penis and the symbol of my masculinity and John
Wayne-ness and my all-important, all-American independence"
mentality, and now it's a done deal.

I'm just commenting on the fact that Americans seem to have GIVEN UP
AND GIVEN IN to the gun nuts, and have rolled over and allowed them
to steamroller them into a society in which they honestly believe
that the only way to be "safe" is to carry around a piece of
technology that has no other purpose but to kill another human being.
Please explain to me how that's terribly more evolved than Stone Age
thinking.

Let's see, guns are high tech rock throwing devices? :-D

BTW, I know some liberals who own guns. One local liberal talk host
talks about having one in her purse and how it saved her and her dad's
life during an encounter once. Go 'figger'.

Do you actually believe that this either refutes or diminishes my
argument?

Do you believe that the "liberal brainwashed" are in any way different
than the "conservative brainwashed?"

I am surrounded every day by people who cannot conceive of the need to
own or carry a gun to lead their everyday lives. Do you consider them
"lesser" than those who are so full of fear that they feel such a
need, whatever their political affiliations?

Just to be clear, I don't own a gun. But at this time in history with
the inequality going on not only in the US but globally this may NOT be
the time to do away with the right to own guns.

1) There are over 7 billion people on earth.
2) The establishment is piss poor at providing the 7 billion a livable
and sustainable environment.
3) The establishment could provide the 7 billion a living environment
but they would have to give up control. Bucky Fuller said over 50 years
ago.

4) The establishment won't give up control so they have to be overthrown.
5) If you don't overthrow the establishment you will live in a world of
their tyranny where they rule like kings and everyone else is treated
like chickens in a coop.
6) If you overthrow the establishment then it is probable chaos will
ensue for a while but that may be far better than living under tyranny.
If we a pro-active we might prevent those who want to grab power post
the overthrow from doing so.
7) The is also the prospect that establishment is dumb enough to start
falling apart itself. They aren't as smart as they think they are and
people like them who are principally focused on the bottom line are not
that evolved spiritually. In fact they are the supreme example of
materialists. Good reason why they are on the third rung of the Indian
caste system. Some major corporation in the US are beginning to fall
apart at the seams as sales go into the toilet. They seem to not realize
that impoverished

And, er, we don't "insist that some obscure amendment to the all powerful

talking, first of all, about the Bill of Rights, the first 10 amendments to the
Constitution, ratified by the states in 1791. The right to bear arms is the
Second Amendment (the First Amendment is freedom of speech and religion),
hardly "obscure." You might want to brush up a bit on your U.S. history:

all this stuff because of the different lifestyle and the ungodly mess they
leave behind. Or maybe the kids are more likely to help themselves to your
tools while the local boys have different ambitions and just steal your car.

Classic student humour mag called Viz Comic started a cartoon strip called
"Thieving gypsy bastards" It was condemned as racist and a group of gypsies
took Viz to court, proceedings were only temporarily delayed by their spokesman
having to do jail time for, erm, theft.

So the stereotype is real and part of our culture. Tricky to track down any
convincing statistics though.

I ask remembering a story my sister told me:

Some years ago, my sister and several friends were traveling through Italy on
a bus tour - the tour guide, a local native was pointing out various aspects of
the countryside, and suddenly he announced that if the tourists would look out
here comes some gypsies. He told them they had to watch out for these people
because they engaged in criminal behavior and would readily steal and rob. The
guide paused for a moment and said "This is not prejudice or anything like
that. This is just fact."

The U.S. has numerous laws against the unlawful possession of guns and
firearms. For example, you cannot possess a gun if you are a minor, a
convicted criminal, a felon, or your are demonstrably insane. The
problem of guns in America hinges on the right to defend yourself from
criminals intent of causing you harm.

So, I encourage all women who can pass the test to obtain a gun so they
can protect themselves. While it is probably rare that anyone of us
would be confronted by violent aggressor, it is still is a good idea to
be prepared to defend yourself if your life is threatened. The real
problem is not gun ownership, but /a national gun registry/. It's
complicated.

In Switzerland, there are three main conditions for getting a gun carry
permit:

/1. Fulfill all the conditions for buying a permit stating plausibly and
clearly the need to carry firearms to protect oneself, other people, or
real property from a specified danger.//
//2. You must pass an examination proving both the weapon handling
skills and knowledge regarding lawful use of the weapons.//
//3. The carrying permit remains valid for a term of five years and
applies only to the type of firearm for which the permit was issued. //

//4. Neither hunters nor game wardens require a carrying permit./

Mike, as far as I can figure, there are 2 routes to creating an armed militia.
One is to invite all of your friends to your home, asking them to bring their

a gun from your own arsenal.

law in the US?

As for guns in Israeli households, couldn't that come from the fact that
military service is required in Israel?

Yes, they have to hang onto their guns when they are on call from their unit
otherwise they are handed in for safety. There aren't freely available guns
like there is in the land of the free.

In fact, if an Israeli soldier loses his weapon he gets 10 years in jail.

Yep, that's what I'm sayin'.When you've got idiots like this spouting out this
antiquated bullshit then I wonder if there is hope for America with regard to
gun laws. It would be guys like this who would be willing to shoot their
'fellow Americans' in order to protect their right to bear arms. Whoopdeedoo. I
will probably never come back to the USA to live, it is getting worse on this
front all the time. People who insist on gun toting are those who are the most
fearful. Fear is what kills, fear is what takes away people's (like Joe the
Plumber) ability to see clearly. It takes away an essential aspect of their
humanity and they become dangers to everyone including themselves.

It would be in the United States, where "Irish travelers" refers to a
tradition of originally Irish Gypsies who still travel in groups throughout the
U.S. They were, in fact, the inspiration for a short-lived but excellent TV
show called "The Riches," starring Eddie Izzard.

Really? Would like to see that.

That's a lot of dead kids so that people can own a penis
substitute.

Wayne-ness and my all-important, all-American independence" mentality,
and now it's a done deal.

I'm just commenting on the fact that Americans seem to have GIVEN UP
AND GIVEN IN to the gun nuts, and have rolled over and allowed them to
steamroller them into a society in which they honestly believe that
the only way to be "safe" is to carry around a piece of technology
that has no other purpose but to kill another human being. Please
explain to me how that's terribly more evolved than Stone Age thinking.

Let's see, guns are high tech rock throwing devices? :-D

BTW, I know some liberals who own guns. One local liberal talk host
talks about having one in her purse and how it saved her and her dad's
life during an encounter once. Go 'figger'.

You sound prejudiced against Hindus. Never pass up a political event if

largest democracy, had national elections that were totally non-violent.
So, now we can expect India to prosper more than it is already doing!

If you look at the order of Amendments to to Constitution, the first was for
free speech and the second was to back up that right.  As I've said before we
have no idea of where the US would be today if it wasn't for the 2nd backing up
the 1st.  Probably would have had a history just like Europe with lots of coup

governments.

Right now we have a small group of very, very rich people who
don't like us having the 1st and our modern means of using it: the

By some law passed in the 70's the Scorpion government is obliged to create
camps kind-a like trailer parks for the Irish travelers to haul their
motorhomes nad trailers to and hang out for as long as they like. According to
the BBC, the local authorities decided to locate a traveler camp within a mile
or so of this farmer's home AFTER the killings took place. Then when he was
about to get out of gaol, they decided to locate the police substation next to
his home at taxpayer expense of course. Sounds like some TM big wig was in
charge of the whole affair.

Never mind. I Googled it, and "Irish travelers" IS, in fact, a euphemism for
Gypsies in this case. That -- and that group's traditional supposed association
with crime -- may have had more to do with the location choice of a police
station than concern for this one elderly gentleman.

Just as a question for Salyavin, is the term "Irish travelers" in this story a
euphemism for Gypsies? It would be in the United States, where "Irish
travelers" refers to a tradition of originally Irish Gypsies who still travel
in groups throughout the U.S. They were, in fact, the inspiration for a
short-lived but excellent TV show called "The Riches," starring Eddie Izzard.

shot them both and killed one, who as it happened was about 16 or 17.

I think
the answer is that if you break into someone's home you have to accept they
might be a paranoid and lonely old man with a collection of illegal weapons.

The whole issue is fraught with difficulty for the law, we really don't want to
end up like america with "armed response" signs on every lawn and loaded
semi-automatics by the bedside.

It was
reported in the article that this man was very reclusive and didn't like
dealing with other people, especially on his property. So out of concern that
the travelers who now had a legal camp just a mile or so from the man's farm,
the local authorities decided to locate a police substation staffed with a
couple officers right outside the man's house!! I guess Scorpion land policing

highly karmic this situation in Fairfield. Here we have a big corporation,

keeping it inner workings secret and in general getting ready to take the
locals for a ride to the cleaners costing them a lot of money. This in a town
that has long been dominated by an organization that came in, lied about its
operation and its intentions, keeps it inner workings secret and takes people
who became true believers for a ride. Karma? Can it be true, or is it just
birds of a feather, energetically speaking I mean.

Yes, she was completely out of
order, evidently did not understand the process of open public civil
meetings and became obnoxious. It had to be done to protect the
public process. It was taken care of openly and the public meeting
proceeded in good order whence the public was subsequently able to
make comments. It was reported in the local newspaper. Other people said the
same things she was trying to say only in better order.
We generally have
really great public government in Iowa because by laws require that public
process must happen in open public meeting. That is how it works in
Iowa. There is long established process in that. A lot of people
evidently are pretty weak in understanding how their government
works. Lot of people it seems have hardly ever been to public
committee meetings. It works pretty well in Iowa by law by
comparison. It's okay, the TM movement is even moving in process in
that same direction now too.    -Buck

Spending eight hours in a cold cell in Jefferson County jail replete with gray

The Heartland project will ship 20 million bushels of GMO corn to Texas and

the fact that Mexico has banned the planting of GMO maize. This is how the USA
subverts the economies of developing countries.
Locally, it will take 25,000 semi-trailers to deliver the grain to Heartland.
25,000 semi-trailers equal 50,000-semi trailers-round trip. Drivers will be
reticent to drive under the 115-year old BNSF railroad, one lane Nutmeg Avenue

Moreover, the supervisors are remiss in not securing an “outside”

Sorry Turq, I'm with Mike on this one, not as if I haven't said so
before.  Besides, we're not exactly dodging bullets every day.
Besides, what about knives?  Should we ban them too?  After all the
Santa Barbara kid killed half his victims with a knife. That's
probably why the liberal community has shifted the discussion from
guns to mental health.  So you may be a bit off script. ;-)

Don't get me wrong...I am not suggesting that there are any easy solutions. You

I'm just commenting on the fact that Americans seem to have GIVEN UP AND GIVEN

into a society in which they honestly believe that the only way to be "safe" is
to carry around a piece of technology that has no other purpose but to kill
another human being. Please explain to me how that's terribly more evolved than
Stone Age thinking.

Woman arrested but not gagged
By Eileen Dannemann | May 22, 2014
To the editor:
Spending eight hours in a cold cell in Jefferson County jail replete with gray
and white stripes allowed me to realize that the “good ol’ boys network” is
alive and well in Fairfield. So, let me tell you what I found out:
The Heartland project will ship 20 million bushels of GMO corn to Texas and
Mexico despite Mexico being the corn capital of the Americas and disregarding
the fact that Mexico has banned the planting of GMO maize. This is how the USA
subverts the economies of developing countries.
Locally, it will take 25,000 semi-trailers to deliver the grain to Heartland.
25,000 semi-trailers equal 50,000-semi trailers-round trip. Drivers will be
reticent to drive under the 115-year old BNSF railroad, one lane Nutmeg Avenue
gravel underpass, but will instead come down Burlington Avenue, past Walmart &
HyVee substantially slowing down traffic and polluting the city. It is
interesting to note that 12 percent of Jefferson County residents already have
lung problems. The county cannot ban Heartland semi-trailers from going down
Burlington without banning all similar semi-trailers. So expect them!
Lee Dimmitt admitted that he was aware of BNSF railroad’s adamant refusal to
renovate the Nutmeg underpass, a critical component in the deal. Yet the
supervisors approved the TIF/bonding resolution, purposely leaving out what
they know to be the county’s responsibility in the very near future – to

Just this week, in the face of the community’s concerns, the supervisors had
the temerity to sign off on a $5,000 appropriation of taxpayer monies to hire
outside attorneys so as to FEDA-fast track a legally binding TIF/bonding
agreement between the county and Heartland, leaving out the Nutmeg underpass.
No such agreement should be signed nor appropriations made to outside attorneys
on behalf of the county before the whole Heartland/FEDA/supervisor story is
pulled out from under the cover of darkness and the actual cost analysis
including the Nutmeg back ended underpass is revealed to the taxpayers.

Never mind. I Googled it, and "Irish travelers" IS, in fact, a euphemism for

I think
the answer is that if you break into someone's home you have to accept they
might be a paranoid and lonely old man with a collection of illegal weapons.

The whole issue is fraught with difficulty for the law, we really don't want to
end up like america with "armed response" signs on every lawn and loaded
semi-automatics by the bedside.

It was
reported in the article that this man was very reclusive and didn't like
dealing with other people, especially on his property. So out of concern that
the travelers who now had a legal camp just a mile or so from the man's farm,
the local authorities decided to locate a police substation staffed with a
couple officers right outside the man's house!! I guess Scorpion land policing
and governmental thinking are different.

Sounds rather disconnected...
