When the world looks at the United States, it sees a land of exceptions: a
time-tested if noisy democracy, a crusader in foreign policy, an exporter of
beloved music and film.
But there is one quirk that consistently puzzles America’s fans and critics
alike. Why, they ask, does it experience so many mass shootings?
Perhaps, some speculate, it is because American society is unusually violent.
Or its racial divisions have frayed the bonds of society. Or its citizens lack
proper mental care under a health care system that draws frequent derision
abroad.
These explanations share one thing in common: Though seemingly sensible, all
have been debunked by research on shootings elsewhere in the world. Instead, an
ever-growing body of research consistently reaches the same conclusion.
The only variable that can explain the high rate of mass shootings in America
is its astronomical number of guns.

shooting on Sunday.CreditCallie Richmond for The New York Times What Explains
Mass Shootings The top-line numbers suggest a correlation that, on further
investigation, grows only clearer.
Americans make up about 4.4 percent of the global population but own 42
percent of the world’s guns. From 1966 to 2012, 31 percent of the gunmen in
mass shootings worldwide were American, according to a 2015 study by Adam
Lankford http://adamlankford.com/research.htm, a professor at the University of
Alabama.

Adjusted for population, only Yemen has a higher rate of mass shootings among
countries with more than 10 million people — a distinction Mr. Lankford urged
to avoid outliers. Yemen has the world’s second-highest rate of gun ownership
after the United States.

[FairfieldLife] Fwd: Stopping Iowa Select - CAFOs

2017-11-07 Thread Dick Mays dickm...@lisco.com [FairfieldLife]

Bhavani,

Iowans are saying NO MORE factory farms and YES to clean water and our quality
of life.

Last night, dozens of CCI members and others in north central Iowa met to
strategize how we fight back and pressure Iowa Select -- Iowa's largest hog
factory corporation -- the Department of Natural Resources, and our elected
officials to stop Iowa Select's applications to build 19 new factory farms.

And, last week, more than 350 CCI members sent emails directly to Iowa Select
CEO Jeff Hansen to asking for a meeting – but he still has not responded to our
request.

>>Can you take two minutes to keep the pressure on?<<

Sign this petition

 at: https://iowacci.ourpowerbase.net/civicrm/petition/sign?sid=40&reset=1

calling on Jeff Hansen to withdraw all factory farm applications and meet with
community members impacted by Iowa Select’s factory farms

Please respond to this email to let us know what Iowa Select says about our
request.

If approved, Jeff Hansen’s factory farms will dump an estimated 36.7 million
gallons of untreated manure on our land and into our water. He gets the
profits – we get the pollution.

Let’s make him feel the pressure from Iowans to want an ag system the works for
farmers, workers, eaters, and the environment – not for big polluters just
looking to make a buck.

They DUMP it! You DRINK it! We won’t STOP til’ they clean it up!
