In 1991, self-professed pranksters Doug Bower and Dave Chorley made headlines 
claiming it was they who 
started the phenomenon in 1978 with the use of simple tools consisting 
of a plank of wood, rope, and a baseball cap fitted with a loop of wire 
to help them walk in a straight line.[19] To prove their case they made a 
circle in front of journalists; a 
"cereologist" (advocate of paranormal explanations of crop circles), Pat 
Delgado, examined the circle and declared it authentic before it was 
revealed that it was a hoax.[19][20][21] Inspired by Australian crop circle 
accounts from 1966, Doug and Dave 
claimed to be responsible for all circles made prior to 1987, and for 
more than 200 crop circles in 1978–1991 (which other 1000 circles not 
being made by them).[14][22] After their announcement, the two men demonstrated 
making a crop 
circle. According to Professor Richard Taylor, "the pictographs they 
created inspired a second wave of crop artists. Far from fizzling out, 
crop circles have evolved into an international phenomenon, with 
hundreds of sophisticated pictographs now appearing annually around the 
globe."[14]

Crop circles dating back to 1945 are proof the phenomenon is no modern
hoax, a Tasmanian historian claims.

The mystery of the increasingly intricate patterns was supposedly solved
after several high-profile cases were revealed to be the work of artists
and mischief-makers armed with barrels, planks of wood and plenty of
spare time.

Credit for the hoaxes has been laid largely at the feet of pranksters
Dave Chorley and Doug Bower, who in 1991 announced they had been pulling
the wool over people¡¯s eyes since 1978.

perimeter corresponds precisely with the shadows cast by the trees and
hedges and that the quality of the image is high enough to show there
are no tracks through the grain crop leading to or from the crop circle


(FYI, crop circles have also been blamed on unusual weather patterns,
top secret military experiments and, er, stoned wallabies

But research by Greg Jefferys 
has revealed evidence of the strange circles in the English countryside
at least 33 years before Chorley and Bower took credit for the phenomena
¨C which until then had been attributed to UFOs and alien activity.

Jefferys, who has a degree in archaeology, was prompted to research the
matter after reading a report on crop circles in an 1880 edition of the
science journal Nature  .

The 59-year-old¡¯s research focuses on images from Google Earth
 ¡¯s new 1945
overlay, which Jefferys studied for more than 300 hours.

SEATTLE (AP) â€" Mysterious crop circles have appeared in an eastern Washington 
wheat field â€" not far from the nation's largest hydropower producer â€" but 
area farmers preparing for the summer's harvest find the distraction more 
amusing than alarming.

"You can't do anything other than laugh about it," said Cindy Geib, who owns 
the field along with her husband, Greg. "You just kind of roll with the theory 
it's aliens and you're special because aliens chose your spot."

Friends called the Geibs on July 24 when the pattern of flattened wheat was 
spotted off Highway 174, about five miles north of the town of Wilbur. The 
field is about 10 miles south of the Grand Coulee dam, which the Bureau of 
Reclamation says is the largest hydropower producer in the United States.

The circles resemble a four-leaf clover and remind Cindy Geib of Mickey Mouse 
ears. The design knocked down about an acre of their wheat. Some of it could be 
salvaged by combines when the harvest starts in a week or two, she said, but 
some will be lost.

"Of course, we don't have alien insurance," she said.

Crop circles have been a worldwide phenomenon for decades, and this is not the 
first one in Lincoln County. Similar circular patterns were left in crops in 
the Wilbur area in 2010 and in 2008 or 2009, Geib said.

Lynne Brougher, public affairs officer for the Grand Coulee dam, hadn't heard 
about the latest crop circles but said the previous one was no cause for alarm.

"It seemed to be highly unusual," Brougher said. "As I recall from a couple of 
years ago, there was no good explanation of how they got there."

Still, she added, "it wasn't a concern."

The latest crop circle was first reported Tuesday by Spokane station KHQ-TV 
(http://is.gd/57FTpy ). There were no signs that anyone walked into the field.

"We're trying to figure out how they got out there without breaking any of the 
wheat. It's hard to walk through the crunchy wheat and not knock it down," Geib 
said. "At the same time, it's hard to think it's aliens. It's a bizarre thing 
to wrap your brain around."

Geib's daughter-in-law, Kelly Geib of Wilbur, says the crop circle has given 
the family something to ponder and chuckle about.

"The kids all like to say the aliens have come, and we're happy to indulge 
them," she said.
