Just because one assumes someone is Jewish doesn't automatically make them anti-semitic. I suggested the Torah because those who study it usually have analytical minds and enjoy debating the possible meanings etc. From reading her posts here I am only guessing that she would be a natural at the law, philosophy or Torah study, if they interested her. It has happened to me quite often on these internet exchanges that one doesn't know the gender of the person one is dialoging with and I have make the WRONG assumption about gender. Somehow this did change my perception of the person after I learned their real gender. Sal's name is a good example. I know she is a woman now but originally I thought "Sal" was short for "Salvatore" and that she was a he. > > > > > > > I thought: was it because the poster considered Judy to be so > > detailed and lawyer-like in her posts that he felt it would behoove > > her to study the very elaborate, very law-like Torah...or...was it > > because the poster assumed she was Jewish? > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > Sal > > > > > > > > > On Mar 30, 2006, at 12:46 PM, shempmcgurk wrote: > > > > > > > --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, Sal Sunshine > > > > > wrote: > > > > > > > > > > No, because her first name is "Judy." > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I don't get it. You'd be surprised how often people assume I'm Jewish from my name--one of the regular participants on this forum, in fact, has done so (and in a rather obnoxious context, as it happens). As to "Judy," the full name, "Judith," means "Jewish woman." So it's actually quite a reasonable assumption, and I'll bet my name *was* why Wayback suggested Torah study. > > Sal > > > On Mar 30, 2006, at 12:46 PM, shempmcgurk wrote: > > > --- In FairfieldLife@yahoogroups.com, Sal Sunshine > > wrote: > > > > > > No, because her first name is "Judy." > > > > I don't get it. My suggestion for Judy - go to law school or at least take some classes in a law school. Or get a job as a paralegal. You would be great at that- a real asset to any legal endeavor. But that kind of analysis and detailed nitpicking does not really belong in normal conversation. I think it is too much even for a chat room. The result is that your (Judy's) posts are genenerally ignored, despite the excellent content of the ones I occasionally read. No one wants to overhear another couple's arguments, especially if they go on and on and on. Correcting another person's choice of words or thought processes is irritating to those listening in, and never changes the "guilty" person, even if they could change.
