According to one of the central figures of Kabbalah, Rabbi Isaac Luria (15341572) held that during creation, the vessels containing the light of creation shattered, and the light became concealed as holy sparks. Every particle and being in our physical universe contains sparks of holiness. Our task, according to Luria, is to release each spark from the shell and raise it up to return to its original state.
