My opinion:

Amma should have kept her mouth shut. Her words border on justifying
the actions of murderers and terrorists.

Interesting, and very sweet, but with regard to
her last comment, I met a guy in Paris who was
actually proud of paintings and photographs of
his mother nude. With some justification...she's
a famous French movie star. :-)

More seriously, although her comments are sweet
and compassionate, isn't the reaction she's
talking about (however understandable it may
be) nothing but attachment? If someone disses
my Mom or my spiritual teacher, I don't *have*
to react as if they were dissing *me*. They
aren't. It's the identification with and the
attachment to the person or the beliefs that
is the problem, not the comments themselves.

Wouldn't a more "high vibe" reaction be to
get beyond reaction? There are organizations --
social, political, spiritual and religious --
that actively *promote* reactivity on the
part of their adherents, as if it's a good
thing to react to any criticism as if it were
a personal attack on them. I think *that* is
the real issue with regard to these cartoons.

Well, yeah, Charles Manson was very upset with Terry Melcher for
treating his songwriting, which Manson held very dear, so
frivolously and Mark David Chapman was very upset with John Lennon
for making fun of Christianity which Chapman, a born-again, held
very dear.

In times of turmoil and murder, responsible people don't go out of
their way to justify why murderers are doing what they are doing.
Instead they concentrate on bringing peace to the situation.

But you can't bring peace to a situation if you don't
understand why it's violent.

Then study the violence.

Not by participating in it, rather by looking at it clearly, seeing
it for what it is, and then systematically transforming each
component of the violence to non-violence, simply by virtue of
having our collective attention on it.

Agreed.

But timing and tact require leaders to tread delicately as to what
is appropriate to say at what time.

Trying to understand why a murderer does what he does is not, in my
opinion, appropriate at the time that the murders ARE STILL TAKING
PLACE. What is appropriate at that time is other words and other
guidance.
