2013-07-02 Thread Bhairitu
I frequently get into discussions on forums regarding the minimum wage.
There are actually two ways to solve the problem of an inadequate
minimum wage but most folks only see one: raise the minimum wage. The
other which they are blind to or think is impossible or perhaps don't
understand or don't want is fix the out-of-whack cost of living which
has gone too high. This also proves that liberals can be just as one
dimensional as conservatives.

But this mess has been building for over 30 years as the last time the
economy was in balance was in the 1970s. It probably won't get solved
until everything collapses. The "modern American" believe that can't
happen but they may well have a surprise coming just as the "modern
Americans" of the 1920s got a surprise.

So the BART problem is just symptomatic of a much larger problem which
is really starting to come to the surface. The funny thing about the
"Tea Baggers" is they don't like to admit who is the real cause of the
problem: the bankers and their malfeasance (unless it really was a
conspiracy to put everyone in debt slavery).

I agree that it is very expensive here, and getting more so. And, yeah, execs
making too much is *always* a pain in the butt. If BART is being run unsafely,
that should definitely change, too. Security for the employees is one of the
larger issues, so I've heard, but once they throw additional $$$ and benefits
into the mix, it becomes too much.

The issue is very complex. I listened to a variety of interviews from
both sides over the weekend. One thing we know is that:

1) the cost of living in the Bay Area is getting ridiculous. I've seen
restaurants at our downtown area raise prices on a sandwich that might
have only cost $6 two years ago to $9. There's all kind of reasons for
this but it's mostly because their landlords are demanding higher rent.
Like many small towns in the Bay Area much of the downtown buildings are
owned by a few unscrupulous bastards (and by few it's often 3). So the
BART workers do need a raise but so do all of us. But that too will
fuel inflation.

2) BART management is unreasonable and pays their top execs too much.
According to the union have been guilty of violating safety regulations
which have resulted in electrocutions of workers.

3) You and I agree BART is a joke. It's an expensive design proposed
back in those days when they thought we were going to have flying and
auto driving cars by the end of the 20th century.

4) I was a member of the AFM (American Federation of Musicians) and
thought even in the 1960s it was a bit out of step. It was mainly run by
over-the-hill musicians who liked carrying a briefcase instead of an
instrument case. So I know that unions have be to blame too. They
missed opportunities to set up working relationships with small startup
clubs to keep the live music scene going.

5) I worked with Bay Area politicians on projects back in the 1990s. I
know how clueless they can be regardless of what side the aisle they are
on. Since Gavin Newsom became Lt. Governor he has been outspoken about
how corrupt the California state government is. Like yeah, just look at
why the capital is in Sacramento of all places! Some overly rich dude
paid for it to be there.

Yep - I am sorry BART employees are unhappy. I think collective bargaining in
government departments is a joke. Most of BART's revenue comes from taxes,
anyway, so to force a pay raise, which will increase taxes, and fares, seems
like a terrible idea. Government workers also overlook how difficult it is to
fire them, the exact opposite of working for a private company. I am however,
very very pro-union, when it comes to private manufacturing and service jobs.
