Well it certainly impressed M that the president of Indian
Congress or whatever it was referred to Guru Dev as Vedante Incarnate. Being
given a title is certainly more distinguishing than taking a title. And who
bestows the title also makes it more valid. Obviously, the body that elected
Gurudev Shankaracharya had the authority to do so and they also had the
authority to reject Gurudev's replacement based upon the circumstances. What
makes them qualified? Their knowledge and position in
society.

Wow. In both of those titles, only one word (the
family name, Nader or Mahesh) is not made up.
What is it about human beings that convinces them
that if they add more honorifics to a person's
name, the person becomes more honorable?

Titles are usually conferred by the guru not the followers. Did they
hold a seance?

Is that why people add honorifics to someone's name?

Or is it because *they* feel the person is already
especially honorable? or to put it another way, do
folks add honorifics because they wish to do more
honor to a person?

A very popular TV-comedy Absolute Fabulous was shown in Norway
last night, where they had some crazy things about the Beatles and
Maharahis sexlife. I do not want to go into details.

I think I would feel better just to hear some official body of
Vedic scholars refer to him as Maharishi rather than Mahesh Yogi, let alone some
Divine Holiness addition.

Me too. I was just pointing out that adding honorifics
to someone's name is usually an effect rather than a
perceived cause.
