 I think the Vatican knows about the rise of paganism in Europe.  The pope 
probably has a plan to "re-evangelize" Europe to bring back the lost sheep.  
There may be the return of St. Patrick and other evangelists.

 You heard right. But a lot of the appeal of the Norse option is that it is 
seen as not contaminated by Semitic attitudes. It definitely appeals to those 
on the radical right searching for their ethnic roots.
 

 This highlights one of our current problems. Not so long ago those advocating 
"progressive" causes espoused a universalism in which "accidents" of race 
should be ignored. The rise of assertive black (and Hispanic) advocacy groups 
has had the predictable effect of encouraging whites to say "ok, but what about 
our group?".
 

 Identity politics is a very dangerous path to go down. We don't know what will 
crawl out from under that rock we just turned over . . .
