through the Hamas and Hezbollah, Islamic fundamentalist 
militant groups, inspired by the Ayatollah Khomeini.

   Any attack on Israel that looked like it might succeed would
almost certainly result in a nuclear response by Israel(which is estimated to 
have a stockpile of 200-400 warheads)I would think this would give any of 
Israel's neighbors serious doubts about how good an idea it would be to attack 
Israel.As far as Iran's ambition to develop nuclear weapons my guess is that 
their main motivation
is to give The US and/or Israel serious pause regarding attacking 
them.Developing nuclear weapons might also confer on them a status
as a super power among its Islamic neighbors in the mideast.

It's a joint exercise of the two nations.  But the US is making it known that 
Israel is a friend and that Iran better stay away from there.
