Well, you know, I haven't seen him doing anything
that I'd even remotely classify as "exposing some
corrupt activity." What I've seen him do is report
on what he's seeing in front of his nose, and showing
it to the audience on camera. I guess he does know
what he's talking about, because what he says and
what we see match up quite nicely.

Perhaps you've seen some special segments I've
missed in which he was "exposing some corrupt
activity."

> Hey, it boosts ratings guess

I think you may have missed what I pointed out
about Fox's coverage on this leaning in quite a
different direction from their usual, and from
the usual predilections of their audience. If
I were a knee-jerk right-winger, I think I'd be
outraged that they were daring to show stuff that
didn't automatically put the government in the
best of all possible lights.

When he 'pines about people suffering--which is
about all I've seen him do these last few days--
and we *see* them suffering, yes, I'll accept
that what he says is the truth.

Of course, it's not just him by any means; he's
just particularly forceful in his delivery. The
same things are being shown and the same observations
being made everywhere I've looked on the tube, in all
the newspapers, on the blogs, including the blogs
containing posts from individuals who've been
trapped there in New Orleans about what they're
experiencing.

But I guess, as far as you're concerned, it's all
a huge conspiracy to make what's happening seem
far worse than it really is, right?

Again, to someone not used to the protocols of disaster, it might appear he
is actually exposing some corrupt activity or knows what he's talking about.
My wife and some other Red Cross people who are watching FOX just shake
there heads--this guy has no clue. Hey, it boosts ratings guess, but it's
sad that many, like yourself, will actually accept what he 'pines as
"truth".

Move away from the TV and take your batteries out of the remote. Unplug it
carefully.

I didn't see the segment, but I wouldn't put it
past him. He's a grandstander from away back.

However, apparently he then ripped Sean Hannity
a new one when Hannity tried to defend the federal
response.

To be a real activist journalist almost requires
some grandstanding. You wish the motivation to do
good were 100 percent pure, but it's more important
that the good be done.

The normally Bush-boot-licking, right-wing Fox
News Channel has been doing some of the very best
reporting on cable (or on TV in general, for that
matter) in this disaster. Shep Smith, who usually
does blow-dried fluff on Fox, has also been doing
a fantastic job.

Given Fox's rightward bias and their largely
right-wing audience, it's tough to make a case
that they're exaggerating the federal failure here
just for the ratings. The folks back at the anchor
desk do try to make the reports from the field
seem not quite so dire, but the reporters on the
ground just aren't going along with it, to their
great credit; and apparently the Fox brass aren't
insisting they tone it down, to their credit as
well.

Give me a break. This goofball will do anything for effect. I'm not
saying it didn't work himself into a little frenzy, but he is all
about ratings. I've seen them leave the camera on for an extra second

People, in general, have a lot of pent-up rage and
grief. If you've ever worked with actors or are one
yourself, you'll notice that the easiest emotion to
access are rage and grief. Events are triggers that
open these floodgates of hysteria. I'm sure Geraldo
was quite surprised by his reaction.

2005-09-02 Thread Robert Gimbel
There is a certain energy, that feeds on itself, in these situations;
You can see, in the reporters, who are on the scene in New Orleans,
especially, that they pick up on the anger, rage, death,
frustration, dispair, and so on.
I saw Geraldo Rivera, last night on Fox, have a complete emotional
breakdown, holding a baby, and crying for help.
It becomes addicting, like an adrenaline rush, to watch, and comment
on an event of this magnatude;
But at some point, it is always good to find balance and peace again;
And take a walk, as has been suggested here;
And use some time, to absorb the event and all of the emotions of
what happened;
And use the energy in a positive way, by feeling how it has changed
you.

Right, Shemp. This is why forbidding Barry
and me from responding to each other (as somebody
proposed awhile back) wouldn't work. Barry
wouldn't honor the ban, his protestations to the

Well, actually most of them probably do.

These are not mutually exclusive activities,
you see, much as you would like to portray
the situation in black and white.

And some of them probably do other things as
well, like donating money and seeing if there
are volunteer opportunities in their areas
that might contribute to the relief effort.

Actually what some of them do is attempt to alert
people who don't yet know what's going on. And
amazingly enough, they may get attacked for doing
so by people who just don't want to have to disturb
their beautiful minds by contemplating the misery
of others.
