Thanks again, seerdope. This is fun too and I also checked out some of the
clips shown on the sidebar. One clip was allegedly best bits from Newsroom
Season 1. And another clip featured the main actors in a tense, confrontational
moment. IMO Sorkin was trying to recapture his West Wing and An American
President glory days. The dialogue in Newsroom seems a bit strained to me,
though the actors bring a lot to the lines. For me that makes the underlying
strain even more obvious. Also for me, Jeff Daniels just seems a little too
laid back. Maybe the character is meant to be a bit jaded by it all, though
jaded might be too strong a word. Maybe resigned is a better word. West Wing I
think does not have that resigned feeling at all. Though there are moments when
the West Wing gang wonders what good they're doing, if any. Anyway, just a few
thoughts...

Sorkin appears to have a effective formula1) sketch out nuanced compelling
characters (easier said than done) with quirky traits 2) place characters in
interesting topical situations and dilemmas. 3) just let the characters react
to the situations per their traits and quirks.4) for each series or film,
liberally borrow, apply, and repeat a subset cluster of a stockpile of pithy
throwaway lines.5) as plot history unfolds across seasons, liberally reference
past actions and quirks pertaining to current situation. 6) collect massive
checks and copious awards
