[FairfieldLife] TV series review: "Outlander"

2014-08-07 Thread TurquoiseBee turquoi...@yahoo.com [FairfieldLife]
OK..I'll go for it, and review this new series, before most others on
the Net do. I think it'll become a contentious subject in the near future, so I
want to get out in front of the snarling pack.  :-)

"Outlander" appears to be a new British-American TV series that is about to
create a sensation when it is released in the U.S. on the STARZ network. (Yes,
them again.) I stumbled upon it in PirateLand a few days ago, and downloaded it
just for the title, but then, as it was actually being downloaded, I read
further to learn that it was the TV version of a remarkably popular series of
Romance Porn novels. "OK," I thought, "that's a bit odd, but maybe worth a
shot." Then I read further to learn that the "Outlander" series of novels --
and thus the TV series -- is an odd mish-mash of bodice ripper/science
fiction/romance porn.

So I watched it. And my personal jury is still out, but I'm bemused enough by
the first episode to write this. It's an odd series, and very well done IMO for
being all of the things it's trying to be. The basic plot seems to be that a
combat nurse in 1945 is magically transported back to the same place in
Scotland in 1743. Adventure and bodice-ripping ensue.
