 I inherited the Eldorado from Mom. She bought it new off the show room
 floor and it's been garaged it's whole life. She still had a driver's
 license at age 86, but hadn't driven in about ten years. So, one day I just
 took it - I'm using it for highway driving. I put some new tires on it and
 a new disc brakes.


 You can't get anything these days for a car like that - maybe $1500.
 The AC still works and it has cruise control. Also, it has a kick-ass Delco
 Bose sound system with CD player inside. Sweet!

We looked at this place yesterday - it needs a little fixing up. Apparently
it was moved here from another
location and placed on concrete piers. The house has an has a east-facing

We saw this house on a trip yesterday to see Dad up in North Texas. I've 
been passing this place since 1962 and watched it go down over the years 
- it was already in pretty bad shape the first time I saw it. We are 
speculating that it probably took 75 years or more for it to reach this 
state. I missed taking the best shot last year when I passed by - there 
was a mule standing in the fog next to it, but I was in a hurry so I 
didn't stop.

We saw this place today, out by George Strait's ranch. The house in the
photo belongs to a wealthy land owner in Pleasanton. The owner of the
houses daughter's spouse's daughter is married to George Michael. If you
look real close you might see George in the window looking out at me across
the field, probably taking a snapshot of me peering over the fence. Go
figure.

Last Saturday we to see this place up by Dad's place. This is one of his
oil wells up in North Texas where he has a place with six lots on the water
at Lake Possum Kingdom near Graham. I use only Texaco oil in all my cars -
most of it comes from either Spindletop, the Permian Basin, or from the
Eagle Ford Shale.

Yesterday I washed one of my cars, with a little help from this dog, Spot.
At our place, we have a garage with two doors with independent
electro-mechanical door openers. That way, when we drive up to the house we
can open the doors and drive in and the dorr will shut behind us with the
touch of a button.

We like this arrangement because it is convenient and safe. Convenient
because there is a door in the garage so we can carry our bags of stuff
from Whole Foods Market right into the kitchen. Safe, because once we get
inside and the door is down, nobody can rob us and take our groceries if
they were to follow us home from the store.

The next door neighbor has installed bars on all his windows and doors and
set up remote cameras all around his house. He built a wrought-iron fence
around his entire yard and has a pit bull in the yard. Inside his house he
has a little yapping terrier; a Browning over-under shotgun and several
pistols including a Colt six-shooter and a Glock automatic, all loaded. He
has probably spent over $10,000 on his home defenses. But, he has to stop
at his gate and get out of the car to unlock it, in order to drive in to
his driveway.

So, I told him that the robbers were probably going to get him when he
stepped out of the truck to unlock the gate, not when he was already inside
the house. He didn't like that. Go figure.

hilly.   Otherwise we have bike paths on the streets but there are often 
Darwin Award candidates going the wrong way on the one way bike lanes 
where they might get offed by cars pulling out from corners that are

You probably don't even need a car over there - in fact, it would be a problem. 
Over, here a car is just another tool for most people. Without one, I'd be dead 
in the water. Some people who are rich probably drive cars just for fun and 
pleasure, like my neighbor, who doesn't drive these cars much - there just for 
shows.
 
 I inherited the Eldorado from Mom. She bought it new off the show room floor 
and it's been garaged it's whole life. She still had a driver's license at age 
86, but hadn't driven in about ten years. So, one day I just took it - I'm 
using it for highway driving. I put some new tires on it and a new disc brakes. 
  
 You can't get anything these days for a car like that - maybe $1500. The AC 
still works and it has cruise control. Also, it has a kick-ass Delco Bose sound 
system with CD player inside. Sweet!

But, the whole town is based on cattle trails. One location called "Five
Points" is where a drunk cowboy once fell off his horse. Spaniards founded
the San Antonio Missions - apparently the very first rodeo may have been
when Jose left the gate to the stable open by mistake, causing the very
first round up (rodeo). Go figure.

pleasure, like my neighbor, who doesn't drive these cars much - there just for

 I inherited the Eldorado from Mom. She bought it new off the show room floor 
and it's been garaged it's whole life. She still had a driver's license at age 
86, but hadn't driven in about ten years. So, one day I just took it - I'm 
using it for highway driving. I put some new tires on it and a new disc brakes. 
  
 You can't get anything these days for a car like that - maybe $1500. The AC 
still works and it has cruise control. Also, it has a kick-ass Delco Bose sound 
system with CD player inside. Sweet!

Maybe number one and number two son should consider attending a local 
community college for the first two years. That way, you save tons of 
money and you could tell based on their attendance and grades whether or 
not they are ready to attend college in the first place.


It's sometimes isn't much fun living in a dorm with strangers, eating 
cafeteria food, doing your own laundry, working as a fast food server or 
cook and having no car or any money for even a date! LoL!


It could be that one or both might do better learning a vocation or 
trade that pays money when they graduate. One gal I know went to a 
two-year LVN vocational nursing school and landed a job before one year 
was over at $12.00 an hour.


Then she saved up some money and went to a two-year nursing school to be 
an RN. Before she graduated she got a job paying $24 an hour, and was 
offered a $10.000 incentive to work at the M.D. Anderson medical center 
in Houston. Go figure.


One guy I know got a degree in Pshychology from Trinity U., not 
realizing that with a mere B.S. in psycholgy, he would only qualify for 
a job as an aide at the State School. Another guy I know got a B.A. in 
German literature, and he's still working at an Exxon Tiger Mart in Austin.

Wife and number two son are in Milwaukee right now visiting some

range, I would get them.  Well, turns out they were $50.00 and some 
odd cents, and I got them anyway, and thoroughly enjoyed them.


But you know what's bad?  Now I want them again!  So much for 
impressions.

Good suggestions Richard.  Thank you.  The closest they might come to that 
would be to attend the St. Louis branch of the state college.  In this case 
UMSL.
  
 But I will be honest about it, at the high school graduation ceremony where 
both sons went, and which happens to have the highest average ACT scores in the 
city, when they announce for each student, which college or university they 
will be attending, no would dare indicate community college.  Or even probably 
technical school. That is not to say, that some might not end up going that 
route, (I know for a fact that many of them do) but at least initially that 
would not be a generally accepted option.  And I'm not saying that it makes any 
sense, but that is the way it is.
  
 Now the scenario you describe above, fits my oldest son perfectly.  He would 
have been far better going the community college route. He could have stayed at 
home, had a part time job, a car, and income. Instead we (and he) have spent a 
lot of money for tuition, room and board for what appears to be a pretty 
mediocre result.
  
 My wife grew up without a father for most of her life, worked very hard in 
high school and always had part time jobs. She attended UMSL for most of her 
college career, then transferred to Middlebury where she got her undergrad 
degree, then back to UMSL for Master's degree, before she got snatched up by 
IBM where she worked for 13 years.
  
 The daughter seems to have inherited her work ethic.  I guess they boys take 
more after me.

If George Armstrong Custer had some Winchester repeaters it sure would have
helped! It also would have helped if had taken that shipment of Gatling
guns with him. Also, he refused additional help from other troops stating
that he "could whip any bunch of Indians" or something to that effect. LoL!

There is a spot up in Austin where Custer stayed with his wife and his
volunteer troops after the civil war. On our last trip up to Deadwood we
visited the Custer State Park. I've read several books about Custer's last
stand where he was wiped out by Sitting Bull. The Black Hills of South
Dakota is full of evidence of Custer, including a county, town.

According to almost all historians, Custer's first big mistake was going
there in the first place; and the second big mistake is when he divided his
troops into two groups, 208 splitting off with Major Reno; and then his
third big mistake was charging in too soon against Crazy Horse. It should
be noted that Custer graduated last in his class at West Point. Go figure.

Big Horn. A doctor was privileged to interview several Lakotas that were there. 
They said that many of the troops committed suicide during the battle and they 
thought it was because of the *firewater* in their canteens. In those days it

your last bullet for yourself because you dare not be taken alive. The Lakotas

off on the horizon and showed it to Custer.  A report had just come in about 
the same time that Indians had been seen foraging through some crates that had 
fallen behind on the trail. Custer was afraid the Indians would know that he 
was close and  would scatter. So he called *boots and saddles* and pressed his 
exhausted men and horses to break camp and attack. I would assume his men and 
horses were not only exhausted but probably many were drunk as well. They 
didn't stand a chance. It is estimated that there probably were  at least a 
thousand warriors and many were better armed, with repeating rifles, than 
Custer's men who were armed with single
 shot carbines and ammunition that constantly jammed and prevented quick

Pride before a fall. It seems to be a common failing in the military.

Another "western" gun that has a certain aesthetic appeal are those old 
Confederate revolvers. As the South lacked the industrial capacity of the North 
they made the non-stressed gun parts of brass. But instead of looking cheap and 
cheerful the yellow metal had a gold-like glamour. 
I noticed that the movie "Ride with the Devil" picked up on that aspect as part 
of its look and really emphasised the golden glow in the shoot-out scenes.

It's that time of year!  So, I wonder what everyone else is doing these 
days? Let's review what we know:

Share flew back east to the big city for a few days.
Barry is still having fun visiting cafes and art museums over in Paris 
and Amsterdam.
The other Barry drives in to Oakland every few days for coffee at Starbucks.
Emily seems to get out and go to some interesting places.
Doc lives in San Francisco, probably up on Nob Hill.

Then, there's Buck who goes into town to the dome and does lambing on a 
farm.
Empty probably goes into work every day with jerks who want him to bow 
and scrape.
Card in Finland, has a Nokia phone and a drum set to play with.
Judy works out of a home office in Jersey and once went by bus to a 
Whole Foods Market.
Ann works with horses up in Canada and likes to post to the internet.

Not so impressive.

Does anyone else posting here ever DO anything? I mean, ANYTHING? Just 
curious.

Richard, speaking of that time of year, I've also been Christmas shopping and 
sending out Christmas cards. Even though it feels like I already had Christmas 
when I visited my family for Thanksgiving! My circuits are all discomboomerated!

Though it is obvious I'll say it anyway: it's very different living in a small 
town in the middle of the prairie than living in a big city on the east coast. 
But much as I love cities, small town living seems to suit me more as I get 
older. I think it helps me appreciate the small and quiet joys of life.

Richard, that's pretty darn good that you and Rita go to a gym every day. I 
hope you all do some kind of cross training. I've read that the muscles need a 
day to reset, something like that.

We live in the country, out by Hot Wells. SAKS Fifth Avenue isn't in a
strip mall, it's located at one of the largest inside malls in the U.S.
Today the mall was packed with shoppers:
