The notjunk icon really confuses me. It's like aproving it's junk.

 Hi,

I've just finished another try on the mail-*-junk icons, because after a
few days of usage I realised that no matter how much you try to get used
to it, it always looks strange... I reverted to original design by Diana
for mail-mark-junk (with various changes) and changed metaphor for
mail-mark-notjunk to, a) better fit with the rest of echo icons, b) to
better fit with oxygen icons and c) to IMHO better symbolise the
 mark-notjunk action.

 Comments welcome,
 Martin

I second that. It looks like Junk is ok. Probably tick should be on
unfolded sheet of paper with junk behind it.

I see your point... My idea was something like: tick symbolises that
it's OK and the semi-transparent junk symbol suggests that it's about
the junk - i.e. the mail is not junk... But well, seems it's too complex
metaphor to grasp on first try (which is bad). What about something like
 this (see the attachment)?

 Martin

Mail-mark-junk is much better than other version that looks like a wet
hedgehog.
For mail-mark-notjunk icon, why not keeping the same metaphor minus
wet hedgehog.
For me, this draft means the mail has been verified.

[Echo] New trash related icons

2008-09-20 Thread Martin Sourada
Hi,

I think there some major problems with how the current trash related
icons look in small sizes and I've tried to fix them once already, but
since I didn't want to touch the Diana's original design (the trash is
one of the first icons that were in the Echo set), it didn't end up very
well. Today I decided I'll give it a go (since I had already a new
design for it in mind), do it anew and see what the reaction would be
like... Just a small note, the edit-delete one has different
perspective, because it's from Action context ;-)

I attach the basic one (user-trash), but the rest is on my fp.o page.

Martin

That's the idea - it's an action icon, that means you are the one who
verifies that mail is not junk by clicking button with that icon... I
didn't exactly liked the original metaphor because it symbolises to me
delete junk mail type of action...

These icons fail to impress. The original version for Diana is still
better by far.

In real life it is usual as well, at least with paper trash bins [1],
though the very design I used is not based on any real-life trash bins.

Also note that the cause for the transparency of my design is different
- mine trashbin is done from coloured dim glass (or at least is supposed
to be made from such material), while most real-life ones are
transparent because they have holes in their body.

Yeah, gnome-icon-theme looks boring and tiresome. I stripped out the
 red part
to make close to the classical appearance but the shape is still
 radical.

Hm... looks more like it's the red colour itself that I don't like
there. Could you try more subtle colour?

Btw. I wasn't implying that gnome-icon-theme looks boring or tiresome,
in fact my personal preference is towards the traditional broom ;-)

Yeah, that is much better. Could you add some outline to the stripe as
well? Also you could make the handle a little bit broader in the smaller
sizes. Could you try using dark brown outline instead of the metallic
one? I think it might work better.
