and enlarged it by 200%, I repeated this step to give me 4 sizes and
densities of stars. now here comes the tricky bit. on each layer I
picked the free hand selection tool and pretty much furiously scribbled
all over the screen and then expanded the mask by about 5 pixels, and
then pressed delete. this results in a more realistic distribution of stars.
I created a fifth layer and using pencil aded four large stars and and
Jupiter and Saturn. I used the neon filter on this layer to make
Jupiter and Mars appear to glow. I could send you the original
unflattened Gimp file to play around with if you like.

Thanks, this was an informative reading! I must find some free time and
try to play with your steps sometime.

That is a beautiful wallpaper, and the "designed to be tiled" idea is
definitely cool. Hard to imagine how to reconcile that with the
"Leonidas" theme, though.

and for the landscape, this is the source:

I've a new proposal for you...

https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Image:F11-wallpaper-deepsky-mockup5.jpg

The background photo was taken at "Thermopylae", the place of historical
battle with Leonidas and Spartans.
Maybe It would be better a more stylized background...and what about for a
spartan shield instead the helmet?

An other idea can be a simple background, with a spartan shield as the main
subject. It's a big rounded shield with a "Lambda" on front, the "L" greek
letter.

Actually, it kind of reminds me an idea I had for Fedora, but instead of
the sequence of colors of this wallpaper, we could use #00(cyan) ,
#000FFF, #FF (both are blue) and #0F (black). That means the 4
Fs and colors very familiar to Fedora.

hi
its looking good, it might look better, if the background is dark navvy
blue, rather than black. though black is a conventional color of night sky,
but to gel with fedora color scheme its better to use blue shades.

I think I would like better an image were the stars are not that sharp
and which looks more "realistic", maybe something more like
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Centre_of_the_Milky_Way.jpg or
even better, see /usr/share/pixmaps/backgrounds/cosmos/cloud.jpg (which
is awesome).

Just out of curiosity, how you made this image?
