You dismissed the blue paper version as not that realistic. I disagree. It
looks just like a blueprint, which is much more realistic than blue ink on
old yellowed paper. Blueprints fit perfectly in the old technology concept.

I eased the wording, indeed, it fir the blueprint definition but I think
it is a departure for the original steampunk target. And I don't want
to dismiss it, I want more of a confirmation/infirmation about it being
on the right track.

For everybody - I tried to put some blue back in the Gears concept:

But neither GDM/GNOME does not use those SVGs, PNGs exported at various
resolutions with Inkscape are used instead (technically, SVG could be
used, but for performance reason and to manually fine tune all the
details, PNG is preferred).

KDE too.

I think the KDE project won't be too happy about seeing a gear-themed GNOME in
Fedora 10. ;-)

Then can you use PNGs? But, if you need to use SVGs I bet that opening
them in Inkscape and resaving them as Plain SVGs would make the
rendering by the kdm's SVG engine better. However, it uses a fair bit of
advanced effects like blur, which takes quite long time to render, so
I'd advice you to use PNGs instead.

Btw. I might be able to do a sketch for KDM (real theme is a no-go for
me, I don't have neither experience nor KDM) if you are interested, I
just need to know, how much you are able to do :)

[F10 theme proposal] Gears Round 1

2008-04-04 Thread Nicu Buculei
With a bit of impulse from Martin, here is the formal proposal for a F10
theme: Gears

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork/F10Themes/Gears

The focus of this theme is technology: technology advancement is one of
Fedora's main goals and gears are a classic metaphor for technology.
A secondary message of the theme is the golden era of Fedora: we are
so confident in our distro that we think Fedora 10 is (will be) the
distro marking the start of the golden age of Linux (and, of course, the
best Fedora yet.

The current implementation uses a steampunk look and feel, it is a good
technology symbol, a large playing field for our imagination and also
something quite original for a Linux desktop (for for any desktop).

OK, we may not be the firs, maybe exclude the original wird from the
talk.

BTW, those are gears or a sun? (sun - light - enlightenment) Do they
use gears in desktop art?

That seems to be right. They look somewhat similar but they probably
denote sun rather than gears.
