Actually, in the latest rawhide package the lion is there, but I am
already working on updating the package both with the updated images as
well as without the lion for single screen.

Is this for dual or single?

For single screen the lion shouldn't appear, only for dual on the right screen.

Yeah for me it makes the right half of my desktop unusable. We can
argue whether the desktop should be used but the fact is that it is
today - and for many people they have icons covering both sides.

Also, it doesn't really work on the GDM screen. Which is our initial
user experience.

Anyway, in general, I think this is one of the best pieces of art that
the group has put together. However, I think maybe the half screen of
lion head is a bit much. Could we see the same design but without the
lion head - just the background textures, lines, and birds - for
comparison purposes? As it is there may be a bit too much high
frequency information in it.

Thoughts?

Leonidas background brightness

2009-04-10 Thread Warren Togami

Hi,

I really like the new leonidas lion background. I have only one question.

I have various files sitting on the right side of the GNOME desktop.
Their filenames are in white and are a bit difficult to read due to the
brightness of the lion.

I am wondering might it be a good idea to darken the color of the
background a bit so white filenames might be easier to read?

its looking good, it might look better, if the background is dark navvy
blue, rather than black. though black is a conventional color of night sky,
but to gel with fedora color scheme its better to use blue shades.

I think I would like better an image were the stars are not that sharp
and which looks more "realistic", maybe something more like
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Centre_of_the_Milky_Way.jpg or
even better, see /usr/share/pixmaps/backgrounds/cosmos/cloud.jpg (which
is awesome).

Just out of curiosity, how you made this image?

Hi team,

I was looking at the F11 Artwork page on the wiki:

...and wondering about (1) the group's progress in converging on a
background, and (2) what needs to happen, and when, for the background
to land in the F11 Beta.

The F11 Beta freeze arrives on March 10th, and it would be good to
have a background ready somewhat before that so there's time to tweak
it before the freeze. As I understand it, once the desktop background
is decided, that will form the basis for the other theme pieces for
the Preview Release.

Thoughts, comments?

I think you should be resizing first, then cropping. It
doesn't sound like that process is going to result in the
objects in the image being the right size? Have you tried it
out on the solar images?

This is awesome! I do think it's a bit late in the cycle to

Does this patch *just* crop or does it resize down too?
otherwise for say 1024x768 you're going to just have one

Woops, should have mentioned that I also filled a gnome bug.
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=558143

The patch first crops the image to the specified size and then after app
the zoom/stretch functions behave just as before. So it makes image the
closest aspect to the desired one by cropping first, and then resizes to
the desired resolution. So for the 1024x768 desktop it would crop to
1600x1200 (4:3) then scale to 1024x768.

We did and Martin and I have plans to clean up the background packages

background space usage

2008-10-26 Thread Charlie Brej
Current solar background's consume 33Mb. This a bit on the heavy side,
especially on the Live CD which is over its image limit. Currently there are 4
different images (morning, noon, evening, night) sent out in 4 different sizes
(4:3, 16:10, 5:4 and 8:3 for dual screen).
What we could do is to send out just one 3200:1200 image and patch up
gnome-desktop background handling to support cropping to the right aspect.

So currently we have:

4-3.png
16-10.png
5-4.png
8-3.png

And since we are interested in the stuff in the bottom right corner we add an X
offset:

8-3.png
8-3.png
8-3.png
8-3.png

This would allow us to ship just one 3200x1200 size of each time of day image.

I do realise this is very late since the freeze is on Tuesday, so this can
easily wait till F11. But if people think it may be possible to repackage
gnome-desktop and the backgrounds in time then forward the attached patch to the

F9 Waves background

2008-04-23 Thread JF
I am very pleased by the new F9 artwork. One detail that popped to my eyes
though is that these annular objects in the waves background are rather
looking like smoke rings. In order to look like waves, the modulation
between minima and maxima would need to be more even, well, simply following
the amplitude of a sine function. Another point is that the rather dark hues
of blue used for rhgb are so similar to those of the the Fedora logo that
both are barely discernable. ~jf

green. The golf ball had the Fedora Logo emblazoned on it.

Does anyone have a copy of this? I've looked in every repository I can
find already! Any help is MUCH appreciated.

I guess this is it (right from Diana's blog):
http://www.isity.net/blog/?p=32

You may find it on Fedora Forum, but serious digging is needed:

I see that Jhon has also posted on the gnome-list group and he posted
that the following command line should work:

gconftool-2 -t str --set /desktop/gnome/background/ \
picture_filename "http://somesite.com/wallpaper1.png";

So I guess, once we update the file, we should just run the following
command again and it should change it.

I am currently toying around with doing this in Java, if I have a
WebStart app running, I shall host it for you guys to try.

I am not the Python person (unfortunately).

This is easy to test: just change the PNG you use as a wallpaper and see
Nautilus does not update by itself, you have to do *something* with
either nautilus or gnome-background-properties..

That's a good idea! i think this can be done easely with just a python
or even shell script.
And how would Nautilus handle this? do you need to notify nautilus
that the background is changed? or is nautilus checking the background
all the time to see if it's existing? If the last one is the case than
rewriting the "desktop.png" file will work just fine.

http://art.gnome.org/backgrounds is one example, anything powered by
ccHost (used at Open Clip Art Library), also Flickr, PicasaWeb or
DeviantArt.

The RSS feeds would allow you to use things like: the latest background
created by my favorite artist or my friend, the best rated image, the

So do I, but the blue color used for the grub splash seems more to be a
fc5 color. Light blue and white for fc5 and dark blue and black for fc6.

I mean that there seems to be a gap between grub image and gdm image.
The couple grub and default wallpaper is fine, but gdm dark version
seems tnot to used the same color palette.

Eks...How bad is it? is not well = bad or just not as good when
switching between the original and new wallpaper? I've been testing it
on my mac laptop, Dell CRT (can't remember the model), hp pavilion f1903
flatscreen and VeiwSonic PT813 CRT...they all look slightly different.
The first three being bright and the last one being pretty dark. =(
I've come up with a method for testing which is to just see how the
icons (along with it's text) and windows look on top of it. Given the
context of icons and windows, I think each (bright or dark) looked ok.
Please let me know...I can try to tweak it some more.

I did/do like the glass sphere as well but in the brighter version it
looked less convincing. It looked ok in the smaller pieces but to be
consistent I've also changed those to the newer sphere. It was a bit of
a hard decision to make and Mola explored quite a few different
materials in his renderings for a better fit. We went with this one
because it sat well within the existing environment, was fairly clean
and still interesting. There had also been a couple of other comments
against the glass look because you could see through it and the lack of
detail behind it was confusing some people, causing them to have see the
helix as disconnected from the strands. I really did like the glass
sphere and was a little sad to see that it wasn't really working as

New background

2006-09-19 Thread John Baer
Diana,

Thank you for providing your artwork on the new background. Just a
couple of comments.

1. When I view the new background on my Dell laptop the brighter image
did not display as well the original. On this computer I believe
something brighter than the original but darker than the current would
be the best solution. I must add this wasn't as big of an issue on my
desktop. The 810 video chip on the Dell may be the reason.

2. This is just me but I really liked the crystal/glass look of the ball
on the first design. I would encourage you to go back to that concept.

3. It looks like some of the rounded ribbons are more flat. I like that
enhancement.

Given the amount of time and the number of graphics to be finalized I
believe you and Mola are probably the best choice in wrapping this up.
If you keep your status page updated I will be happy to test and provide
feedback on how they look.

If you have a specific need and if you believe inkscape or gimp will
craft it, always willing to help.

Cheers,

Yea...I'm not entirely sure either. I saved it again via the Gimp and
manually set the black & white within the 16 color palette. That seem
to have fixed the problem.

I intend to review all the specifications required for the theme change
before opening FC7 design to the community. Hopefully by doing that we
can eliminate the technical confusion and focus on the artwork.

It did what? What resolution is the bitmap at right now?

Ah sorry, misread...I thought you asked if the "linux" thing showed up
if I made it widescreen and whatnot. ^_^
bitmap used is currently 1280x1024 72dpi...I have other versions if a
different size is needed. So far it looks ok, even on higher
resolutions/sizes larger than the image itself. But we can determine
the optimum background size and replace it easily.
Also, you should double-check all the PAM messages to make sure they
are showing up right.
Yup, did some of that. It is currently being looked into further...in
addition to smart card prompts and such. Matthias was testing it out
last night and now Ray is looking at it as well.

Re: Fedora 6 , Background

2006-09-05 Thread Diana Fong
Done...literally in a day with no sleep...though...maybe two because
Mola is ahead by 8 hours.
Hope you guys like it. http://people.redhat.com/dfong/fc6graphics/

DNA idea from Mairin.

A HUGE thank you to Mola for experimenting and help setting the look
with his 3D modeling and rendering (Blender). Thank you so much Mola!

Also would like to thank John Baer as well for experimenting with a
different look and feel. I think in FC7, there will be a lot of
interesting approaches from many talented people. =)

Using this background as the starting point Mola and I are testing
out a
few ideas on #fedora-art (freenode.net). Take a look at where things
are headed...http://people.redhat.com/dfong/fc6reGraphics/MolaBranch/
These are modifications of his 3d rendering
