I think I like the previous one better - the widget (or is it gadget?)
is rather small and IMHO successfully draws attention away from the
zillion of gears, which for me this one does not and covers too big area
of the wallpaper.

While I think the all-blue one is less distractive and would work better
for a wallpaper, the one with the widget is basically impossible to
ignore. One thing that catches my eye is the colour of the gears in

What could I say... The recent takes in the gears theme is simply
awesome. I am myself torn between

http://duffy.fedorapeople.org/temp/gears-blueswirl-normal2.png and
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h58/mairinduffy/gears-blueswirl_steampunk3c.png

While I think the all-blue one is less distractive and would work better
for a wallpaper, the one with the widget is basically impossible to
ignore. One thing that catches my eye is the colour of the gears in
background (in 3c). Also the distraction created by the complexity of
the wallpaper is IMHO too big (too much of detailed gears, IMHO).

Perhaps try a combination of both (blurry blue gears in background and
the widget in the front) and more de-focusing of the gears in
background?

Or maybe we could have another focus besides just gear cogs?

Well here's another couple iterations:

I made this weird gear gadget thingy (modeled after watch internals)
using Nicu's gears and some custom other thingys:

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h58/mairinduffy/gears-blueswirl_steampunk3c.png

Also liked how the background was a bit more subtle behind it so I made
a copy without the weird watch thing:

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h58/mairinduffy/gears-blueswirl_steampunk3d.png

I also attached the SVG source for the new gear arrangement.

Not that my voice counts much, but I must say that I liked the earlier
monochromatic (blue) version much better. I've used it for a few days
now, and it is very nice.

I actually really liked that one better as a wallpaper too, and I think
it may be a better style for a default Fedora wallpaper because it's so
blue. However the problem is that as soon as we tint the gears blue,
people complain it's "too KDE."

I'm not sure how to get around that, because even though I disagree that
it's "KDE", that perception is not something I think we want and enough
people have made comments to that effect that I think we're going to get
that unless we modify that version of the wallpaper somehow.

My only ideas are different coloring (which I tried above but I think it
doesn't seem as suitable for a wallpaper) or if some additional widgets
can be integrated into it so the gears are just one type of object in
the design, maybe there won't be such a strong association with KDE. I'm
not sure what though. Maybe gears at all different angles and other
things you'd see inside a watch like Robin suggested earlier. Another
idea I had was maybe to create some kind of abstract steampunky object,
kind of like these steampunk jewelry pieces [1] and have that as a focal
point along the right bottom of the wallpaper.

Well, I did a GIS for 'Cambridge clock tower' to find the above
image... Trinity college is a (relatively) well-known college in
Cambridge (UK, not MA). Sir Isaac Newton happens to
be an alum. Newton knew a bit about motion, and was also the originator

I think the colors are a bit dark for Fedora. Something with a more

FWIW, I really like the keyhole idea, if you want to move it in a more
concrete direction. By that, I mean more of a feeling of looking
inside an actual mechanism than an abstract collection of gears. Both
directions have merit, but I find the more-concrete idea interesting.
I'd also personally love to see the gears meshing, and more types of
mechanical components, such as ratchets, worm drives, flywheels,
springs, et al. It could be made to look more like the inner workings
of a clock or watch or similar device, such as:

http://watchluxus.com/admin/ajax/image.php?src=101&maxwidth=550

With more of the inner workings covered up with the keyhole idea.
Perhaps the keyhole(s) could be in the shape of or suggesting the
Fedora logo?

Also, this could be made to dovetail with the cambridge concept a
little bit, for instance:

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Clock_Tower,_Great_Court,_Trinity_College,_Cambridge.jpg

In a different direction, could the rotating background effect be used
to show a suggestion of an actual clock face with the current time? I
realize that interpolating images of a clock with the hands at each
hour will make a blur rather than discrete hand positions, but perhaps
that could be made to work.

I think the colors are a bit dark for Fedora. Something with a more
Nodoka-default-blue feel would be much nicer IMHO. Of course, we can
play with this with time-changing wallpapers and whatnot.

It also seems like there's too many gears and the desktop, as a whole,
is distracting.

Yeah, I'm using a big LCD where I am, and although I'm not a color
maven, I think I've adjusted it away from "meh" to "not bad."

That sounds like an *incredibly* cool idea to me.

I totally agree with this. When I tried it as a wallpaper I noticed the
same thing. I made a less saturated version but I made it only for the
aspect ratio of my monitor; it's easy enough to recreate if we want to
use it though; I tweaked the blue channel of the image using the curves

Yeh. I am thinking maybe some clever fade-in fade-out might make it more
suitable for a desktop background. Another idea I had was make some kind
of keyhole shape in a much more solid/less distracting gradient, and
punch the hole (or wholes) through so you can see glimpses of this gear
work behind it. It might be a really cool effect, but I also think it
would take it even further towards the cyberpunk end of the spectrum
than steampunk. :)

Well, here you go :)

http://duffy.fedorapeople.org/temp/gears-blueswirl_steampunk3.png

I used a masked pipe photo to texturize the larger front gears, and I
colored them in with a golden color using the color blending mode. So
maybe the golden color with the texture makes it a little more
steampunk. I kept the background blue.

I also made a bit of a darkened version of the above; maybe it would be
more suitable for a wallpaper because it's a little less distracting.

http://duffy.fedorapeople.org/temp/gears-blueswirl_steampunk3b.png

I had to remove the other xcf i uploaded before; I ran out of
fedorapeople.org space so I compressed the xcfs as a temporary solution:

http://duffy.fedorapeople.org/temp/gears-blueswirl.xcf.gz
http://duffy.fedorapeople.org/temp/gears-blueswirl_steampunk3b.xcf.gz

(you can make both 3 and 3b from the 3b source above. Just turn off the
swirl layer to get a 3 out of it)
