But at the same time I think its useful for us to also keep the fancy,
complex, designs for those who want to make their own discs on
inkjet printers.

Definitely! We'll have them both on the media designs page and just
label one as for inkjet and one for professional printing!

I think it would be good too to put the artwork for the inkjet ones into
glabel templates so its that much easier for folks to print them.

Maybe just link to your tutorial [1], otherwise we may need to produce a
lot of templates in gLabels, one for each paper type (or *at least*
Letter and A4).

Then Paul, you can act as our fearless leader and choose what you like
best and go with it :p

The issue is like that and depend greatly on the printing shop: The
second (complex) design looks much better but is harder to print, the
first (simple) is much printer-friendly, while is not bad looking at all.

The second part of the issue is about file formats, if the printer
insists about a vector format and that vector format is PDF or EPS (and
*no* SVG[*]) then the simple layout probably can be adjusted to look
acceptable in that format, while for the complex layout, I don't think
is possible for us to provide something else than SVG and/or raster (at
whatever DPI values they want).

The last part is related to costs: the complex layout have more
colors, will it cost more? Too much?

Mo, Max said that he ran into the printer at recently and they said they
were ready to work with us. What will it take to get this underway?

I think we need the choice above and the exact detail about file formats.

[*] - even if both Adobe Illustrator and Corel Draw should be perfectly
able to open SVG files.

I'll spend some time today modifying the disc design for this. But I
fear the printers will likely not be able to take it as-is because of
color-matching and there is going to have to be some back and forth. If
we can work that out with a more generic disc design then hopefully we
won't have to go through it next release.

Hey Ryan, it looks like the cd design is only 3.7* inches but it should
be 4.5 inches right? Where did you get the template?

Okay, here's what's going on:

- It looks like Ryan used the FC5 template, which is what I recommended
he do. Well, that template was actually off. No wonder the fc6 discs
came out with extra space along the edges - we used teh fc5 template for
that!

- I simplified the disc design a lot so there are less colors. The
design we had the most truoble with last year was the disc design; the
sleeve was less difficult. So I thought if we can get the disc right
this year with simple/generic design, then we can just use the same file
and increment the fedora release number and make things a lot easier on
ourselves. I did this design in scribus.

- I used Ryan's design for the sleeves. It looks fabulous printed out.
What I did is removed all text but the stylized 9 and fedora logo, and I
exported that to a 300 dpi png. I imported that bitmap in as the
backgroudn in scribus, and I did all the text in scribus.

It is looking like the scribus color management is going to make things
a lot easier with the printer this release. ( The main problems we had
were color matching. ) I sent these files to the printer today. I'll let
you know when I hear back and if we are good to go:

http://people.redhat.com/duffy/misc/f9-discs/disc%20labels.tar.gz
(includes scribus source files, svg source files for background, and the
eps files for the printer)

The previews of these in PNG format are also in that directory:

The TM probably needs to be outside the Fedora logo bubble, because
generally it's the unadulterated appearance of the logo that is,

This has continually been painful for every release. Granted, for
Fedora 10 the design schedule may work out as an improvement, but what
about:

* removing the Werewolf from the F8 design for the disc itself, updating
any dates or numbers as required

Re: Fedora 9.0 CD/DVD

2008-04-14 Thread Giacomo Succi
When ready, consider uploading your graphics to the wiki:
 http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork/MediaArt/F9 (you can post there
 even as work in progress)

Sure! When they are ready I upload them on the Wiki :).
Anyway.
I've create a 2nd attempt.
I've only add the web site. Unfortunately I've found the wallpaper
with out the sulfur crystal so I keep it as the previous one :((.

The 2nd attempt is at the same site:
http://succi.altervista.org/fedora/

Happy Fedoring!!

A new Fedora is coming and new Fedora's CD/DVD Artwork are needed.
So I've create some new Artworks, as the previous one.
At the moment they are in RFC phase, so go to
 http://succi.altervista.org/fedora/ and let's have a look.
Please, feel free to comment/criticize my work!!

They look great! You might want to look at the DVD labels Nicu did some

To reiterate a previous comment, we absolutely need to print the URL on
the CD/DVD covers -- the back side would be a good place:

2008-04-13 Thread Michael Beckwith
Another thing to consider is the fact that due to feedback, we redid the
wallpaper and didn't use any instances of sulfur crystals. It was a last
minute thing that has happened quickly.
