Some comments to the previous patch: It is a first try, only to get it working;
it should be fully working, though. It's for West lang. group only--if you have
enabled Asian or CTL lang. groups, you will see nothing new...

I've used list-boxes for the new controls (Posture/Weight/Stretch); they are
refilled after each change of Font Family, where each of them gets assigned all
values of the particular attribute that Family contains. That implies it's
possible to select combination which has no real counterpart in font file. There
are two another ways to solve the filling and the chosen one is somewhere
between them:
1. The controls contains always all possible values for each of them (i.e.
Normal/Italic/Oblique for Posture).
2. The controls are updated on change in any of them to reflect only allowed
combinations--this would be no change to current state.

Oh, and to apply the patch requires all my previous patches have been applied as
well.

A question to anyone acquainted with Asian/CTL fonts: Is there anything as
font-stretch in use in these fonts? If there is, then there is a need for
specific SIDs, controls and XML attributes for them as well. I haven't found any
positive evidence of it, but maybe someone knows better...

> Is there anything as font-stretch in use in these [CJK-]fonts?

Many CJK fonts come in two variants: monospaced and proportional
Calling this attribute "font-stretch" is a bit of a stretch though... in this
case the other commonly terms
"proportion" or pitch" are more appropriate

@tora/@khirano: are you aware of any CJK font families that have other
pitch-variants than monospaced
or proportional, e.g. condensed or expanded?

Wow! I was on vacation for three weeks and when I came back I saw a huge patch
attached. Great. :-) Thanks for the patch.

It will take some time to review it, I hope we can do this in the 3.1 time
frame, at least we will try.

Oliver, please take over. I'm sure that Herbert can help with the VCL part if
necessary.

btw, since you only seem to speak about font stretch and weight, don't forget
there are other possibilities. Many Adobe fonts have an "outline" style for
example, or have "text", "caption" and "subhead" styles. And there are other
possibilities. That means two or more styles in the same family with the same
weight, stretch and slant.

Also, please don't magically change the style names, so keep the original
names as defined in the font, and not some interpreted version from the
numbers in the font which will confuse people and will give problems in the
case above.

Summary: liberation-fonts >=1.04.2 have problems with some websites

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=461039

Summary: liberation-fonts >=1.04.2 have problems with some
websites
   Product: Fedora
   Version: rawhide
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
  Severity: medium
  Priority: medium
 Component: liberation-fonts
AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
 QAContact: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
CC: fedora-fonts-bugs-list@redhat.com
   Estimated Hours: 0.0
Classification: Fedora

Created an attachment (id=315657)
 --> (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=315657)
good.png

Description of problem:
At first, I am using liberation fonts on a Gentoo system, I have already tried
to send this to https://fedorahosted.org/liberation-fonts/wiki but I am unable
to login succesfully. I am using epiphany-2.22.3 built against xulrunner-1.8
and gnome-2.22, I have tried with "Sans" and "liberation sans" fonts, both with
the same problem (and with size 10)

Gentoo ships an old set of liberation fonts (seems to really be
liberation-fonts-0.2) but they work FINE with most of websites (at least, all I
have tried), then, I have updated to 1.04.2 (and later to 1.04.90 with the same
problem) and I have started to have problems with sites like:

http://elmundo.es/

I can reproduce this problem always, if I put the mouse pointer over a link
bellow first titular (their size is a bit smaller than fist titular) only part
of text is underlined, other part not

I attach two screenshots showing proper (with old liberation-fonts) and
unproper behavior (with new)

This also occurs, for example, with:
http://www.lavozdeasturias.es/
http://elperiodico.com/

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
1.04.2 or superior

How reproducible:
Simply try to move mouse over links in mentioned webpages (not all links fail,
maybe it could be related with size)

Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.

Actual results:

Expected results:

Happily, this patch seems to be already applied in the latest upstream version
which I have just built in rawhide. ;)

Did you need this update in f9 as well? We try and not update fontforge in
stable releases because fonts might also then need updating, leading to a lot
of churn and problem. ;(

tora->hdu: Thank you for giving us a chance to comment some.

In sum, Japanese fonts, in general, do not use terms such as condense
or oblique. They uses wight, instead.

Microsoft Office Japanese uses traditional font faces:
regular, bold, italic, and bold italic.

Professional users from such as publishing use lots of fonts which
are normally decorated with weight. For such users, artificial bold
seems not a choice. They simply uses heavier wight of fonts, instead.

Either italic or italic bold is probably not applied for Japanese
characters and is not typically used for publishing. Both italic
and italic bold are normally applied for Western letters.

For historical reasons, Japanese often uses both Japanese characters
and Western letters in a single document.

For Japanese, many fonts are available:
 - Fonts embedded in Windows
 - Fonts released by font vendors, for professional use
 - Freely available fonts

Fonts samples embedded in Windows Japanese and 2007 Microsoft Office
System Japanese. Snapshots are available in the following web page:

  http://office.microsoft.com/ja-jp/2007/FX102141601041.aspx

The first 5 fonts (MS UI Gothic to MS Pxx) in the web page are
the fundamental fonts of Windows Japanese that are available
   from Windows 9x to Vista.
Their font names begin with two letters 'MS.'

The rests are the fonts that are accompanied with the Office System.
Their font names begin with two letters 'HG.'

  Naming conventions
   MS [P]FontFamilyName
none: Monotype (fixed width)
P: Western proportional letter and Asian proportional character

   HG[P|S] FontFamilyName
HG: The font vendor seems to add this two letters at the beginning
none: Monotype (fixed width)
P: Western proportional letter and Asian proportional character
S: Western proportional letter and Asian monotype character

  Bold and Italic
It seems that Windows is capable of rendering artificial bold and/or
   italic glyph.

For font family メイリオ embedded in Windows Vista Japanese is ClearType
and probably has four font faces.

Font selection and rendering fixes

GTK+ font fixes and enhancements.

Implement font fallback for the simple FontConfig-based text path and
improve the Pango-based complex text path to make use of requested
font properties and available font selection.

Add text shadow support to the complex path.

Some notes on this patch:

1) These changes push Pango's high level (layout) API as far as it can go. If
we want to go further we'll probably want to use the low-level Pango API
directly as Mozilla does, but at least the complex path is now
feature-complete.

2) FontPlatformDataGtk's comparison operator and copy constructor need to be
fixed some time to avoid leaking FontPlatformDatas. The leaks are pretty minor
(per-font) and the fix was too involved to be ready for this patch.

3) Our FontConfig-based fallback font selection doesn't always match what Pango
would select since we don't have that kind of advanced coverage analysis, but
with these changes the simple path does successfully select fonts with the
necessary glyphs available for the first time.

I hope this improves the experience for users of non-Latin scripts and would be
interested to get some feedback. You need to build with the "freetype" backend
to see most of the improvements since they haven't been implemented in the
"pango" backend yet.
