 matrix.pfa is a type3 font, not a type1.

As such, file(1)’s current output is exactly what is desired from that file.

If file's output does not include font the file won't be recognized by apps
that rely on libmagic to identify fonts.

Right now labels for font files are:

Clean:
TTF : TrueType font data
TTC : TrueType font collection data
OTF : OpenType font data

Not:
the PS and PCF font labels are a mess but they at least include font
somewhere (Though the upper)

--- Comment #2 from Daniel Novotny dnovo...@redhat.com 2009-06-16 10:25:05

(In reply to comment #0)

When gunziped manually it correctly identifies them as X11 Portable Compiled
 Font data.

seems this is not the case

[da...@f11 tmp]$ cp /usr/share/fonts/japanese-bitmap/kaname-latin1.pcf.gz .
[da...@f11 tmp]$ file kaname-latin1.pcf.gz
kaname-latin1.pcf.gz: gzip compressed data, from Unix, last modified: Fri Mar
27 08:05:07 2009, max compression
[da...@f11 tmp]$ file -z kaname-latin1.pcf.gz
kaname-latin1.pcf.gz: empty (gzip compressed data, from Unix, last modified:
Fri Mar 27 08:05:07 2009, max compression)
[da...@f11 tmp]$ gunzip kaname-latin1.pcf.gz
[da...@f11 tmp]$ file kaname-latin1.pcf
kaname-latin1.pcf: empty
[da...@f11 tmp]$

reassigning to japanese-bitmap-fonts owner: is this normal? zero-length fonts
seem a bit strange...

p.s. there are also some fonts in the directory, which do not gunzip to empty
files, and those are correctly identified by file -z as fonts

When gunziped manually it correctly identifies them as X11 Portable Compiled
  Font data.

seems this is not the case

Did you try knmhn12x.pcf ? I know I tested this one and gunziping manually did
make a difference on my system

[da...@f11 ~]$ file -z /usr/share/fonts/japanese-bitmap/knmhn12x.pcf.gz

but I have a 32bit system and I see you have x86_64 packages: I can try 64bit
test tomorrow

But which apps on the system can handle type3 fonts?

They are only useful for embedding in PostScript files, since a full PS
interpreter is required to render them.

(There may be some ΤεΧware in the wild which can handle the subset of type3
fonts which dvips will produce from mf bitmaps, but not vector-style type3s.)

As such, the file in question should be handled like any eps file — which is
probably why it is declared as eps — rather than like a font.

existed in the font list, but when I asked for it there was nothing.
 I may crash soon.
Segmentation fault

Is there any way to fix this?

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): I have tried both
the most recent version from the Fontforge website
(http://fontforge.sourceforge.net), fontforge-20090408 and the version in the
repositories, fontforge-20090224.

How reproducible: It happens every time, no matter what choice you make at the
prompt.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Type fontforge into the command line
2.
3.

Actual results: Fontforge encountered a Segmentation error.

Expected results: Fontforge should have opened a font or created a new one.

The ukai is now contained by cjkuni-ukai-fonts package. Please update .spec
file of X to reflect that.

Also, sorry that I have reassigned to xorg.x11 because I have no idea which
package is responsible to 'Requires' the font package.

Regards

This looks like a duplicate/variant of bug 466404.

Can you try the workaround there to recreate font caches and see if it works?
Lets continue debugging this over on that bug.
