Why?
What gives you the right to say what gets posted or does not get posted here ?

This is the fedora kernel list. I posted an issue with the latest fedora kernel
source.

If you have a problem with that, I strongly encourage you to unsubscribe from
this list.

That could be some sort of mismatch between that Rawhide kernel and the
F11 X Server you seem to use (Rawhide currently uses X.Org X Server
1.6.99.1). I'd try one of the following kernel command line options:

 nomodeset
 radeon.modeset=0

Those could be used to work around some issues with Rawhide's Radeon
kernel driver (or Rawhide's Radeon X module, or whatever) a few weeks
back. (It' s just a guess though. I hardly know anything about the way
the kernel and the X Server interact.)

 Paul Bolle

 Thank you Paul.

nomodeset was accepted as a boot arg. radeon.modeset=0 was not recognized as
 a valid boot arg.

However, nomodeset did the trick. I now have X up under the auspices
 of kernel-2.6.31-rc8.fc11.i586

 Other observations:
after I edited the boot args and added the nomodeset radeo.moseset=0
and pressed b to boot, it took almost 3 minutes to get the login prompt.
Even after logging in, it took more than 1 minute to populate the screen with
all my icons: about 55 of them.

Also, starting up Firefox and thunderbird also took considerably longer.
Sorry for not providing an objective time value in terms of how much
slower they started - should have timed them !

To provide some comparison with other kernels:
2.6.29.6-217.2.16.fc11.i586 boots to the login prompt in 1.5 minutes.
2.6.29.5.191.fc11.586 booted to login prompt in 38 seconds.
On same dual boot machine, Windows XP boots to login prompt in
 30 seconds.

 Cheers,

 MK

I timed the boot to login prompt duration again for kernel-2.6.31-0.190
and this time it took only 84 seconds. First timing may have been affected by
other factors - fsck???

You are having exactly the same problem I had with 2.6.3x kernels

Release F11 stuck at 2.6.29 ???

2009-08-28 Thread Markus Kesaromous

When will 2.6.30 and 2.6.31 be released as updates for F11
Why is F11 being kept at 2.6.29? That is what F11 was initially
released at, and it is still stuck at this release?

I would like to know if and when 2.6.3X will be released as an updated for F11.

WOw - that's great that your build went better.
I downloaded my source tarball from:

Where can I download the source tarball you used?

RE: Recompile kernel without SMP

 Subject: Recompile kernel without SMP

 Hi there,

I am trying to recompile kernel without SMP. So far I've been
unsuccessful. Meaning I am able to compile, but it was still SMP..

Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong?
 And why I don't get kernel-headers build?

It is probably related to spec parameters

So far this is what I've done:

 cd ~/
 rpmdev-setuptree # as regular user
 cd rmpbuild
yumdownloader --source kernel # as regular user

 cd ~/rpmbuild/BUILD/kernel-2.6.29/linux-2.6.29.i686/
 cp configs/kernel-2.6.29.6-i586.config .config
 make menuconfig # console setup

Select option: Processor type and features.
 Disable Symmetric multi-processing support (SMP)

 cp .config ~/rpmbuild/SOURCES/config-i686-generic
 cp .config ~/rpmbuild/SOURCES/config-i686
 cd ~/rpmbuild/SPECS
 nano kernel.spec
 Add line:
 % define buildid .NONSMP
 Replace:

 # Allow kernel-firmware building
 #%define with_firmware %{?_with_firmware: 1} %{?!_with_firmware: 0}
 %define with_firmware %{?_with_firmware: 0} %{?!_with_firmware: 1}

 #%define with_firmware %{?_without_firmware: 0} %{?!_without_firmware:
 1}
 %define with_firmware %{?_without_firmware: 1} %{?!_without_firmware:
 0}

 # Allow kernel-headers building

 # Allow kernel-devel building

 # Create RPM package
rpmbuild -bb --with firmware --target=i686 kernel.spec

 # To actually install kernel
 su
 rpm -ivh kernel-firmware-2.6.29.6-217.2.3.nonsmp.fc11.i686.rpm
 kernel-PAE-2.6.29.6-217.2.3.nonsmp.fc11.i686.rpm
 kernel-PAE-devel-2.6.29.6-217.2.3.nonsmp.fc11.i686.rpm

 Just in case:
 $ cat config-i686-PAE | egrep -i smp | more

 # CONFIG_SMP is not set
 CONFIG_X86_FIND_SMP_CONFIG=y
 # CONFIG_X86_VSMP is not set
 CONFIG_SCSI_SAS_HOST_SMP=y
 CONFIG_VIDEO_VP27SMPX=m

 Best,
 Paul

I just got bit by a similar problem in trying to build

kernel-2.6.31-0.125.4.2.rc5.git2.fc12.src.rpm

I followed the steps outlined in

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs/CustomKernel

I only wanted to build i686 architecture

- without SMP

- without cpu id support

- without multicore support

- without hyperthreading support

- with kernel config support

- with kernel config via /proc support

- with frequency default governor set to Performance

- with preemptible kernel

- with rt2860 module support

- with NTFS read/write support

Well, it ended up building i686-PAE Debug kernel with SMP support.

It seems as if the architecture is i686, then only i686 PAE Debug gets built.

I do not know where the problem lies, but SOURCES/Makefile.config

might be the place where the target kernel build is being selected.

To get around it, I edited
...SOURCES/Makefile.config and removed all rules and definitions pertaining to
i686-PAE and only left the simple i686 def and rule.

PS: I do not know if this is necessary, but after I copied .config to
...SOURCES/config-i686
I also copied it to
...SOURCES/config-x86-generic

Then running rpmbuild -v -bb --target=i686 kernel.spec
is proceeding without problems

 2009/8/12 Markus Kesaromous :

 Dear List,
I searched the ath9k source directory
 /usr/src/redhat/BUILD/kernel-2.6.29/linux-2.6.29.i586/drivers/net/wireless/ath9k
for any strings that would hint/suggest support for the Atheros 9220/9223
chipset. I saw no such strings.

What strings were you looking for?

I stated: for any strings that would hint/suggest support for the Atheros
9220/9223 (meaning 9220 or 9223 ala grep '922[0-9]' * (within the ath9k
directory).

So, I emailed Atheros.com sales dept. and asked if they intend to provide an
 open
source driver for the AR9000 series chipsets, esp. the AR9220/AR9223. They
replied that they already DO support the AR92xx chipset in the ath9k driver.

Before I go out and purchase the mini-pci card, is it true that the ath9k
 driver
has ineed been tested to fully support AR9220/AR9223 chipsets??

Your thought process intrigues me. If you have communication from the
manufacturer advising it is supported then you have your answer (and a
waterproof returns policy if they are wrong).

I have learned never to trust sales people. When it comes to dealing with
online

merchants, what the sales contact at the manufacturer says will not be
sufficient
reason for return for a full refund, of a device which turns out to be
unsupported.

My question to you is - why do you have to resort to assuming such a pompous
attitude via questions like Your thought process intrigues me.

There is a fitting description for such attitude, but I will not spam this
mailing list with such a vivid description.

 Some basic investigation
on the web will tell you what you need to know:

 http://wiki.debian.org/ath9k#supported

Generally I just plug shit in and it works.

kernel 2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11 compil ed from source will not boot‏‏

2009-08-10 Thread Markus Kesaromous

Dear list,
There is something seriously wrong with this kernel release.
It compiles - but will not boot all the way. It hangs somewhere.
I even tried to boot into single user mode. I never get to the shell
prompt when booting in single user mode, nor to the
gnome login banner when letting it boot in multiuser mode.
After some 30-45 minutes I Ctrl-Alt_Del and the kernel
pops the message

Stopping all md devices
..
and the pc reboots.

I did not have this problem with these kernels
2.6.29.6-213.fc11
2.6.29.5-191.fc11

Are there others who have tried to build 2.6.29.6-217.2.3.fc11
from source rpm and configured the kernel in any way before
building?
Did you see any errors when running make modules_install
as I did? Did the resulting kernel boot up all the way?

If you need more info, please let me know.

Cheers,

Markus K.

The main piece of information you appear to have missed off is the
modifications you have made in your build. I would suggest the
 following for further reading:

Thank you Christopher. The steps to build the kernel at URL
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Docs/CustomKernel
were exactly what I needed. I was not aware of this document before.

The only thing extra I had to do was to untar linux-2.6.29.tar.bz2
and fix drivers/staging/rt2860/config.mk, and then re-tar.

Guess I should have created a patch, and should have added that patch
to the spec file. But, since this is only one-off, I did not see the need for
it.
I am sure there will be yet another kernel update for whic I will have to
repeat this whole process. What a pain in the neck! If I had known that the
Atheros 9K series of mini-pci cards were supported natively, I would not have
bought the Ralink 2860 card.

Thanx again for your help.

Cheers,

Markus
