Fedora Weekly News Issue 137
Fedora Weekly News Issue 137 = Welcome to Fedora Weekly News Issue 137 for the week ending August 2, 2008. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FWN/Issue137 Fedora Weekly News keeps you updated with the latest issues, events and activities in the Fedora community. We are pleased to present a new beat on Virtualization issues and developments brought to you by beat writer Dale Bewley. In Developments we report on How Maintainers Can Help Reduce XULRunner Breakage. In Announcements we reveal the Fedora 10 codename. In Artwork we examine The Blue Color of Fedora. In Security Advisories, another new beat authored by David Nalley we run through the week's important updates. We are also saddened to announce the departure of Thomas Chung from the editorial chair, but heartened to be working as a new editorial team consisting of Pascal Calarco, Oisin Feeley and Huzaifa Sidhpurwala. If you are interested in contributing to Fedora Weekly News, please see our 'join' page. Being a Fedora Weekly News beat writer gives you a chance to work on one of our community's most important sources of news. Ideas for new beats are always welcome -- let us know how you'd like to contribute. We are still looking for a beat writer to summarize the Fedora Events and Meetings that happened during each week. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/NewsProject/Join == Announcements == In this section, we cover announcements from the Fedora Project. http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-announce-list/ http://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-announce/ Contributing Writer: Max Spevack = Fedora 10 (Cambridge) = Josh Boyer informed us[0] that Cambridge was the winning name in the Fedora 10 naming election. Jeremy Katz wrote[1] on his blog that Cambridge was the original Red Hat Linux 10 codename, which was the release that eventually became Fedora Core 1. [0] https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-announce-list/2008-July/msg00014.html [1] http://katzj.livejournal.com/434986.html == Ambassadors == In this section, we cover Fedora Ambassadors Project. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Ambassadors Contributing Writer: JeffreyTadlock = Help Wanted: LinuxWorld San Francisco = Karsten Wade put out a help wanted call [1] for the Fedora booth at LinuxWorld San Francisco. If you are in the area and wnat to help out, please check the mailing list post [1] for details or the wiki page [2]. [1] https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-ambassadors-list/2008-July/msg00412.html [2] https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Events/LinuxWorld_SF_2008 = Event Report: Lindependence 2008 = Karsten Wade reported [1] on Lindependence 2008 on the ambassador mailing list. THis event was in Felton, California and was an attempt to get an entire town to switch to FOSS alternatives. [1] https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-ambassadors-list/2008-July/msg00381.html = Event Report: Palmetto Open Source Software Conference = David Nalley posted [1] his event report covering the Palmetto Open Source Software Conference. This was a first year event and included a talk by Greg DeKoenigsberg and included an imprompt Fedora booth. [1] https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-ambassadors-list/2008-July/msg00375.html == Developments == In this section the people, personalities and debates on the @fedora-devel mailing list are summarized. Contributing Writer: Oisin Feeley = How Maintainers Can Help Reduce XULRunner Breakage = The recent breakage of many packages which depend on xulrunner (see FWN#136 XULRunner Security Update Breakage Stimulates Bodhi Discussion[1]) was addressed[2] in a post by Will Woods. Will reported that a QA meeting involving Christopher Aillon (caillon), as Firefox/XULRunner maintainer, had investigated the problem and produced an explanation and some recommendations for other package maintainers. As Christopher was unavailable for a week Will was relaying the information in the hope that some fixes could be made in his absence. [1] http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FWN/LatestIssue#XULRunner.Security.Update.Breakage.Stimulates.Bodhi.Discussion [2] https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2008-July/msg01682.html The reason that some xulrunner-dependent packages were affected and others not was that xulrunner provides both a stable API gecko-devel and an unstable API gecko-devel-unstable. Will noted that BuildRequires of xulrunner-devel or xulrunner-devel-unstable should no longer be used and instead that gecko equivalents should replace them. Packages using the stable API were unaffected by the update of xulrunner. Will stated that [t]he unstable API could change at any time, so if your app is using the unstable API it must be rebuilt *every time* xulrunner is updated. It was recommended that packages that used the stable API should use the following in their specfiles: Requires: gecko-libs = 1.9 BuildRequires: gecko-devel = 1.9 and that those using the unstable API should use: %define gecko_ver 1.9.0.1

One another great FLOSS app that you should consider learning is Inkscape [1]. It's for vector-based image creation and I think it resembles Corel Draw a little with it's UI. With the icon preview I think you are right, it would be probably cool if Inkscape would change the UI a bit and show the icon preview for a selection, group or certain area. I don't think the positioning matters - he uses a template with some rectangles standing for the variously sized canvases and all the positioning is relative to those. Btw. Rahul Sundaram wrote: Do we have a instance of RT or trac setup to keep track of logo requests? If not, should we? AFAIK, we don't have one, this is handled manually by one single person. I think it would make sense to keep track in one of those instances: - if more people are in charge with the job (which I don't think is the case, not so many requests and not so many people with the right background for the task); - if we want accountability and know who give permission to who and when (more than what's in Mo's mail archives). If we decide about keeping track, it may be made in the simplest form with a wiki page (like the DesignService page), generating mail notification for those in charge. -- nicu :: http://nicubunu.ro :: http://nicubunu.blogspot.com Cool Fedora wallpapers: http://fedora.nicubunu.ro/wallpapers/ Open Clip Art Library: http://www.openclipart.org my Fedora stuff: http://fedora.nicubunu.ro ___ Fedora-art-list mailing list Fedora-art-list@redhat.com http://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-art-list

Rahul Sundaram wrote: Hi, Do we have a instance of RT or trac setup to keep track of logo requests? No. We used to use a ticketing system and it was a royal pain in the butt because it didn't work right, I ended up losing some requests, the response piece was broken so I had to copy/paste information into my mail client to respond manually and I didn't know if someone else who might have been on the queue had already answered the ones I was answering. And because the response piece didn't work it did not serve the purpose as serving as a record since replies could not go thru it. If not, should we? Does anyone else want to help me with the queue? Is there a good target for calling to static for now? To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure we need to worry about it until the actual release (even them I'm not sure we'll need to). The wiki's internal caching and mod_cache seem to be useful enough together (yet a pain for some other things) that for anonymous users it'll be cached anyway. We now have 3 machines handling wiki data, and it is from a fairly powerful DB, so where the caching doesn't help the backend should be able to pull the weight. We'll want to make sure we can edit it. Perhaps as part of making it static we can tell people to post changes to the talk page, then we'll do irregular updates of the static content? When making changes to the page, you'd need to go to https://fedoraproject.org/w/index.php?title=Releases/10/Alpha/ReleaseNotesaction=purge (I'm 99% sure that this will work for all users). Basically it'll wipe the MW cache etc and display the fresh copy. I think this would be a rather interesting experiment and I am sure that Mediawiki will pass with flying colours :). And well, if it does turn out we need to use static pages, then it's not that hard to do :). - Nigel ___ Fedora-infrastructure-list mailing list Fedora-infrastructure-list@redhat.com https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-infrastructure-list

OK. Have you tried to get this to work with WEP turned off? Sometimes removing complexity can help. I checked the SSID and WEP key information (and I have other laptops - a MacBook Air and a Sony Windows XP machine) working on the router. The Sony is using the router wirelessly as well? When NM is confused, it usually fails to determine an IP because it hasn't set up to connect to the access point properly, usually because of some other reason. Here the iwconfig and iwlist commands can be helpful. What does iwconfig have to say about your wireless card? no comment on SEL. I use WPA Personal security at my house. AES encryption. The last time I tried to connect to a WEP network, I was unable to (OK, that was back in June). I'm not sure if that's been fixed since then or not, I haven't had the opportunity to try again. No problems connecting to either open or WPA networks though. Go figure. Can you try to set your router to WPA or turn off security temporarily just long enough to run a connection test? Are you running wpa_supplicant as a service? (if so, try disabling it.) Is the network service still enabled when you are trying to use NetworkManager? wireshark and single byte multicast error
Hi, I've been practicing my multicast socket programming and noticed if I send a single byte over multicast, and monitor via wireshark, I see a message in the top pane : Destination port: port[Malformed Packet] ...and in the lower pane : [Malformed Packet: DCP (ETSI)] ...instead of : Data (1 byte) ...which is what I expected. The packet length and checksum are ok. The packet gets read and the byte is displayed at the receiver. Sending more than one byte is ok, data bytes are reported, no error shown. NFS mount points (directories) inaccessible in RunLevel 3
I have seen the following issue on several and current Redhat Linux distros. I'd like to understand the problem and avoid it. More importantly, I want to fix the problem on my current server. As root, I created 5 directories under /mnt and mounted remote directories via NFS. All was well for weeks. I added a new hard drive (/dev/sdb) and mounted it under /tmp to move files onto it. I umounted then remounted /dev/sdb1 in it's final location (/web.) I then restarted the server and found the directory entries under /mnt were not visible and therefore, unable to be NFS mount points. The new drive mounted fine. I dropped the server into Run Level 2 (from 3) and could see the five directories under /mnt. This is driving me crazy, thus I am missing something. Re: How to swee youtube videos,
Tim: And that's your problem, g: not my problem. if it cures having to change screen back and fort, then it works. It certainly is, if you're going to bitch about other people's emails not rendering intelligibly, as you've done before, when the only thing wrong is that YOU are mangling them. I think this episode is at least the third time that you've moaned about someone's text, when there was nothing wrong with it. You have to use the correct encoding. it is not me using wrong encoding. Erm, yes it is, when you force the client to believe an encoding is being used, when it really isn't. You were the one seeing mangled text, the rest of us saw it quite fine. The original post was sent correctly. And none of us had to do anything special, at all, to read it properly. play with your client's font preferences. You might have to manually select font families for different encodings (named after localities, screw that. this whole thing started us-ascii and then a bunch of crazy asses, bgc included, came along and caused all of problems that make whole frigging problem. Who, the hell, is bgc??? ;-\ For what it's worth, US-ASCII has always been inadequate, even for plain old English. Yep, despite what many would think, English, itself, uses more than A to Z, 0 to 9, and more than the scant punctuation found on the QWERTY keyboard. Accented words are part of English. When English adopts a word from a foreign country, it keeps it as is. Lazily over time, accented letters lose their accents, but the accented word is still correctly part of the language, and US-ASCII is *useless* for representing it. Ligatures are part of English, ENCYCLOPÆDIA is a correct way to spell the word in the English language, but US-ASCII is *useless* for representing it. And there's a plethora of proper punctuation that US-ASCII cannot do. probably want to untick the option to allow messages to use other fonts. no way, hoza. like i said, i am not screen chasing. Of course, everyone must pander to you. Everyone must use the lowest common denominator... I'll give you a hint - a hammer is not a screwdriver. And the name you're trying to say would be José, but US-ASCII is incapable of it, and you're not even close. You probably think voilà is spelt walla, too... Fonts issues are one thing I really dislike about Firefox and Thunderbird, they've convoluted it all to hell, and use *pixel* sizes in a disastrous fashion. it is not fault of mozilla products. it is fault of those who keep trying to change it for their own personal likes. The mess of font selection in Mozilla isn't their own fault? You try figuring out what they've done. Something is determined to be Western, or not, depending on whether it used ISO-8859-1, or UTF-8, and/or something else. And they certainly don't give you any easy way to select the same font for all languages, if you happened to have one that could manage. You have to plough through each region, one by one, customising each one individually, if the defaults aren't good. Those who designed Mozilla designed that mess, it IS their fault for such a crappy way of setting fonts. how else are you going to do it if you do not do it by pixel??? think about that before you answer. Um, you seem to have missed the POINT about how to set font sizes, pun intended. If the fonts *really* were 16 pixels as the program likes to pretend, on one screen they'd look like flea poo, on another they'd be quite big. Setting font sizes using pixels as the reference point is an incredibly DUMB way to do it, made even more worse by not actually using the pixel as the size (it's scaled, yet still calling itself pixel size). You can see that nasty effect when you do calibrate a system properly, putting the *real* DPI into your configuration (that's the dots per inch that's available to draw with, not something else). Font sizing should be done by a system like points, where you can pick an actual font size, absolutely, and the computer system figures out how many pixels to draw it with. You want 12 point type on page, you ask for it and get it in one go, without diddling up and down trying to find a pixel size that gives you 12 point text. It's made all the more worse when some dingbat web author doesn't understand this, and sets pages with 6 pixel or 60 pixel text, because that looks fine on *their* monitor. just look at what has happened. really. nearly every time you open a web page some clown has come up with some new whiz bang crappy new way to wow public. all it is is more and more waste. SoundBlaster USB audio harshly distored
I have run the Alsa Information Script and the results can be seen here: http://pastebin.ca/1092537 This an Asus G2S-B2 laptop - Core Duo, 3GB ram The USB soundcard is the SB0300 (Audigy NX 2) Almost always, when I fire up the computer, I get very harsh distorted sound from the Soundblaster, though rarely, it will come out real clean; when it does, it never lasts more than a few seconds, and then the distortion returns. A headset plugged directly into the Audigy produces clean sound every time. The intel audio that's built in to the laptop produces clean sound, always. It's not very satisfying because the built in speakers aren't very loud, and I'm slightly hard of hearing. The output of the SoundBlaster Audigy is being fed to a pair of Bose speakers, whose quality, as well as volume, is far better than the built-in speakers. I'd read somewhere about changing the default sample rate from 44100 to 48000, which I tried to do in .asoundrc with the following: pcm.rate_convert { type plug slave { pcm hw:0,0 rate 48000 } } This had no effect. Yes, that's by design, unless you'd like to start a fund for paying people to maintain Fedora releases longer :) There was a project called Fedora Legacy precisely for providing some maintenance for older releases, but the man power wasn't enough and the project eventually shutdown. There are other distribution with LONGER support periods, you could try Red Hat Enterprise [GNU/]Linux or CentOS (if you want to keep on the Red Hat family). Best, Rui -- Pzat! The reply pointed out that Fedora core 6 was supported until one month after the release of Fedora 8. With releases scheduled every 6 months, any release has a supported life of only 13 months. The phrase planned obsolesce comes to mind. I probably run an operating system install longer than most. Of the machines at home and work that come to mind, one is running 5, two are at 6, one at 7, with the latest running 8. Due to several bad experiences, newer versions are installed only when the machine can be taken down and the disks reformatted. Running an older version is not the end of the world, but a 13 month support cycle seams a bit short. The box running Fedora 8 originally received Fedora 9. It was for a project that needed to move forward. The state of KDE made that imposable and Fedora 8 was installed. That project is now over. I now realize that support will end one month after the release of 10, or in around 6 months. I can see the value of time based releases for publicity and scheduling purposes. It may not be the best thing for those needing continued utility and stability. On a different note, my thanks goes out to those who have made open source work. Hi, Robert. Fedora is not the best choice in your situation. You would be much happier with one of the Enterprise clones - CentOS, Scientific Linux, and one or two others come to mind. CentOS is now at 5.2, and is very like Fedora Core 6. It has a very long support cycle (about 5 years, IIRC). You might like to try F10 when it comes out, on one less critical box. KDE is already fairly stable, but not yet complete. There's going to be a learning curve, though, even when it's complete. Re: no sound with totem
Craig White [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: 1 - install package xmms-mp3 (will play mp3) xmms-mp3 plays mp3 files like rhythmbox which uses also gstreamer. 2 - execute 'totem-backend -b xine' (should help with online mp4) i have also tried the xine backend with the same result: no sound if i play audio/video files with totem. If i play the with other apps i have sound. This is really strange. Gstreamer should be able to play these files with sound like i can see if i use other applications. But with totem i have no sound on my notebook. On my desktop PC with the same packages installed totem can play these files with sound. But i have no idea where i should start to find the problem on my laptop. best wishes, Björn -- Support Free Software, join FSFE's Fellowship (http://www.fsfe.org) -- fedora-list mailing list fedora-list@redhat.com To unsubscribe: https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-list
