With the new kernel everything works with no error message, however no sound is output, like the volume is muted or set to very low values. I have checked all volume sliders, both for pulseaudio and alsa and all of them are at maximum and unmuted. I am using the PAE kernel if that matters. Thanks Alfredo Ferrari I didn't have exactly that problem with the 159 kernel. I was able to play sound but it was slowed down by about 1/3 to 1/2. I couldn't find a reason, and wasn't sure it was the kernel, but when I, like you, reverted to the 134 kernel sound began working just fine. I don't use pulseaudio. The 159 kernel seemed to work fine other than that. I can report another issue with the snd-hda-intel driverI am using a Dell Vostro 1400 laptop and using the 159 kernel the lineout does not work. If the speakers are plugged in, there is no sound whatsoever and I checked every possible mixer setting. Unplugging the cable to the speakers, however, results in sound coming out of the laptop speakers after a noticeable pause. Reverting back to the 134 kernel, these issues go away. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate/MailingListGuidelines I also have the Dell Vostro 1400. This is fixed in the latest tarball. Use 'system-config-network' to setup ip addresses. Do select Activate device when computer starts option. Also unselect Controlled by NetworkManager option. Now when you close the system-configure-network, it will copy the gateway address to netmask due to a bug. Now edit the interface file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0' and just fix the changed netmask. Once that is done, disable 'NetworkManager' service and enable 'network' by running 'setup' on shell. Reboot and see everything is in place. It sounds like your old windows installation used digital audio playback (using the raw data from the disc, fed down the data lead, and the computer turning it into audio). This is generally the way that you rip audio discs, too. Some player programs can work that way, or start and stop the drive playing itself, feeding audio decoded by the drive, itself, to the sound card. For what it's worth, neither way is playing wav files. There can also be a problem in choosing how to play a disc, as there are not files on the disc, it's one continuous stream of encrypted data. There needs to be some way to show a list of tracks to play, there are systems which fake a file system, or players which determine the table of contents for themselves (perhaps when you add a plug-in). If you're not connecting an audio cable between drive and sound card, you need to find a player program that can do digital playback. XMMS can do this, but required you to set up a fake CD directory for you to pick as being your track list selector (choosing to play a pseudo file from it would play the appropriate track on the disc). Though, your description of the drive starting to do something, then aborting, sounds like you might have another problem. e.g. Some people have said that some drives are no good for playing audio CDs for them. Or, you may be trying to play one of those discs which are copyguarded, and don't play back on computers. -- [...@localhost ~]$ uname -r 2.6.27.9-73.fc9.i686 Don't send private replies to my address, the mailbox is ignored. Disk Problems: Advice Welcome
I've been having some strange, but fairly predictable, problems with the disks in my system. If disk activity is very heavy for a long time---say, I'm downloading a lot of stuff---then, at some point, I start to get disk errors and the system will all but freeze up. The first sign is often an error from syslogd, saying it can't write to the log, but I can also get similar errors from (e.g.) akregator, saying it can't write to some file under $HOME. Other operations may continue to function at this time: E.g., the download will continue, and I can even start another one. But attempts to run commands can abort with Input/Output error---though not all commands may show this problem. This looks to me like some kind of hardware issue, but I'm not experienced here. Any advice welcome, especially concerning what I might do, other than replace the (expensive WD Raptor) disk. Where is dvb-utils for Fedora 8?
I am using Fedora 8 with a usb HDTV tuner. It works great with xine (I copied the channels.conf file from another computer), but I cannot get kaffeine to work. Kaffeine sees the tuner (/dev/dvb/adapter0) but in dvb configure, the source box is always empty - it should show the atsc scan frequency list that is provided and exists in the appropriate directory. The generic VESA works, so the problem is probably triggered when the device-specific drivers run acceleration or 3D-specific functions. Once the bugs are fixed in the device-specific drives, I will certainly be trying them out.. but right now I need the other units to be fully functional. Fedora Media for North America
As posted on my blog[0] today, I'd like to make the following announcement and provide information to help North American Ambassadors. The Fedora Live CDs arrived this past week, right in time for Christmas. They look great. (see http://herlo.fedorapeople.org/files/f10media/) If you are interested in obtaining some pressed media to distribute at an event or Local User Group (LUG), please make a request on the new FAmNA Resource Request tracker[1]. (A special thanks to Jon Stanley for setting this up.) Make sure to include the following information (at minimum): * Name and Address * The number of LiveCDs you'd like - Currently, we only have 32-bit LiveCDs. The order has been placed for 32-bit and 64-bit install media, delivery is expected around mid-January. When this media arrives, I will announce the availability. * A short explanation of your request and how it might promote Fedora * Phone Number (optional) * How you would like the shipped (Choose Ground unless you can justify faster shipping) * Your region (shown as component) - Do Not assign the task to anyone, it is automatically assigned to the correct person based upon region. In addition, you will likely get a 'TICKET_VIEW privileges are required to perform this operation' error. We do this because we are asking for mailing addresses and do not wish to share them with anyone else. Check your email, if you received a confirmation of the ticket, it has been filed and we'll address it as quickly as possible. If you are interested in who is getting your request, you may wish to head on over to the North America regional list[2]. If you are an Event Owner for Q4 2009, please do not send requests. Events are handled by the FedoraEvents[3] page. We are aware of the events and will coordinate with you individually. In addition, at the upcoming FUDCon[4], we'll be building an AmbassadorKit[5]. The AmbassadorKit is designed to be a small package delivered to any Fedora contributor who wishes to spread Fedora. The AmbassadorKit will include the following (at minimum): * Between 10 and 20 bits of Media (LiveCDs, DVDs) * A display box for holding media * One or Two Fedora t-shirts * A few sheets of Fedora Stickers * Fedora Buttons Other items can be included in the AmbassadorKit, such as: * Fedora Temporary Tattoos (while supplies last) * Fedora LiveUSBs (in the future, or if some sponsor would like to donate them hint hint) * Anything else you can think of that would be useful for promoting Fedora. Once the AmbassadorKits are designed and can easily be built and delivered, we will add them to the FAmNA Resource Request tracker so they can also be requested. I look forward to delivering massive amounts of media over the next few months to those who need it.
