One such program is the convert-command, which is part of the
ImageMagick-package.

It can do primitive shape morphing, for more information go here:

http://www.imagemagick.org/discourse-server/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=11263

I've used convert only to do fade-morph frames between images taken of
the same view, which then are fed to mencoder to produce a video.

I can publish the shell-script which I created to accomplish this if
you're interested?

Re: How to set up a DNS server(at Home)

Hi,

Just a minor additional suggestion: since this is for a home network, you
probably have DNS servers supplied by your ISP. You should configure your
named server as a forwarder rather than doing your own full resolution,
e.g., add

forward only;
forwarders {
68.87.76.178;
68.87.78.130;
};

to your named.conf options section. The values above are for Comcast in San
Jose, you'll need to change them!

Take care,

Whereas in windows you need an nvidia driver in order to use multiple

hmmm... I may not quite have been clear... I'm getting older and,
methinks, a little absentminded. I'd like to have different backgrounds
on the different workspaces. I find it helpful to remember where I am
and what I'm doing there. The last time I tried LINUX this was a
possibility, but with all the improvements these days that ability seems
to have gone away.

You are not going to find a way to easily sync the two password
lists for existing passwords. You would have to crack the passwords
in one list, and use that to change the passwords in the other list.
(It is probably easier to crack the NT passwords...)

Take a look at using PAM for this. You will have to do some
searching, but there is a module you can add to /etc/pam.d/passwd so
that it will change the Samba password at the same time.

It was not a Samba programmer. The only way to use the same password
database would be to use clear text passwords with Samba. The
problem is that Windows and Linux use two different password hashes,
so it does no good to compare the encrypted password that Windows
sends to the encrypted password in /etc/shadow. Both are "one way"
hashes, so you can not easily get the password from the hash of the
password.

This is not the "recommended" way, it's just another way.

If perl is already install in your system and using cpan, then do
$ sudo perl -MCPAN -e 'install Bundle::CPAN'
The Bundle::CPAN is just an example. Any module can be installed that way.

You can use yumex to install CPAN.pm

I use cpan2rpm, you install cpan2rpm by

yum install capan2rpm

then for example:

cpan2rpm -i Statistics::Distribution

or

cpan2rpm --no-sign  -i Statistics::Regression

I changed "Pod::Text" in  /usr/bin/cpan2rpm to "Pod::Parser"

It is very handy

why is it necessary for you to conclude with a statement that
demonstrates your ignorance as if it somehow insults someone other than
yourself?

Samba schema is based on methodologies that Microsoft employs which are
not compatible with Posix attributes. Therefore, you get sambaNTPassword
and sambaLMPassword attributes that are Microsoft compatible hashed
passwords but the userPassword (Posix) could be a variety of different
encryption schemes depending upon your implementation but none of them
being compatible with the simple hash Microsoft uses.

Yes, samba has an option to sync unix passwords so that a Windows client
can change a password and it will change all 3 above attributes when
configured properly and no, I don't know of a configuration switch that
will do it the opposite way, where you change userPassword and it
simultaneously changes the other samba attributes.

I use horde/imp/etc. and there is a module called password that allows
users to change their passwords. There probably are other programs that
can do much the same. You can probably roll your own program to do that
as well.

In the end though...samba performs all of its functions as intended and
the problem isn't samba at all, it's the passwd command itself because
it is entirely oblivious to the concept that another password
methodology exists...perhaps you should be shooting a Unix/Linux
programmer or two...

Have another look. I think they just updated the page to say February 8.

Here's what I did to localise the time to me. At the bash prompt:

$ date -u
Fri Feb 6 22:31:49 UTC 2009

Then I copied that date string, pasted it back at the prompt but changed it (so
that I don't have to memorise the format of the date string):

$ date --date='Feb  8 1:30:00 UTC 2009'
Sat Feb 7 17:30:00 PST 2009

So, on the west coast of the US this class will start on Saturday at 5:30PM.
Do I have that right?

samba, ldap and syncing authentication

2009-02-06 Thread Michael Cronenworth
I have a Samba server acting as a PDC with Fedora Directory Server
running as the LDAP server, which holds all the users and passwords of
the domain. Everything is properly configured and running great.
Changing passwords from within a Windows machine changes both NT and
UNIX passwords.

However, I can't seem to find out how to sync NT and UNIX passwords from
a Linux client. I can set my Linux client to use LDAP auth, but it only
changes the UNIX password. I occasionally login to a Windows VM and
would like to use /one/ set of username and password credentials. I
/cannot/ have two passwords (please, don't ask why). Right now I'm
having to manually sync NT and UNIX passwords since my Linux client is
my main machine.

Yes, I know about smbldap-tools and that's what I have the PDC using,
but I'm looking for a solution that uses the system "passwd" command to
change passwords. If there is no other way, fine, just tell me and I'll
use smbldap-tools on my Linux client.

P.S. The Samba programmer who thought it would be awesome to have
separate password keeping should be shot.

Yep. Perhaps we should drop this from the Xfce comps group.

gdm is a big one. It now basically requires a gnome desktop to work.
Perhaps we should look at pulling in kdm for Xfce. ;)

From the command line you can use 'date -u' and it will show your
current time in UTC.

You can also do:

date --date='Sat Feb 07 01:30:00 UTC 2009'

I don't think PackageKit handles this (doesn't seem to work).

You can just put "yum upgrade" in cron if you dare, I personally like to wait
see if this list or BZ report problems. Only urgent bug fixes go in fast.

Note: some upgrades require a reboot, I don't know how you tell doing it this
way, and if you reboot every time and you hit a fails to boot the machine is dead.

You may want to consider remote administration as an alternative, this is
something I might do on RHEL but not on Fedora.

Yea, all my scrolling problems seem to be associated with multiple
tabs, especially if some tab has flash/java nonsense going on,
it will freeze up the whole UI for seconds at a time.

Why FF is working so hard to update dynamic contents on tabs that
aren't even visible is perhaps a question that ought to be asked :-).

I agree that the Geda suite is not very well integrated and hard to
break into. However, I have used SPICE at work for decades and found
the Ngspice simulator fairly easy to use. I'm developing my own
waveform viewer which allows arbitrary math to be performed on the
simulation waveforms:

http://www.omnisterra.com/walker/linux/post/intro.htm

For PCB layout (I'm also doing some X10 stuff!) I've been very
happy with Kicad:

http://kicad.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

I've done about 10 printed circuit boards with this GPL'd tool (some 2
layer, some 4 layer) with no problems. It includes a schematic capture
tool, a footprint editor, and a PCB layout tool. The layout can be
design rule checked and compared with the schematic. Output is standard
Gerber. You can even get a 3d view of the finished board.

>

If you do want to use Unetbootin the basic method I used for the Samsung
NC-10 was:
since I only had XP running on the system, as purchased, I used UNetbootin
running in XP to create a bootable
usbkey containing PartedMagic 3.4 since I wanted to partition the drive
before installing Fedora on it for added safety in case the install went
wrong.
http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UNetbootin

The PartedMagic iso is available from http://partedmagic.com/

So booting PartedMagic from the bootable usbkey that resulted allowed me to
create two ext3 partitions (one to be used for root /) and a swap partition
but also leave the original XP c: drive and shrink the d: drive to
accommodate the linux ext3 partitions. There is also a hidden recovery
partition which I did not touch. The intention was to use manual disk
partitioning during F10 install to control where Fedora 10 would install and
also to control how the non-root partition would be mounted.

In this case I decided to use the Gnome LiveCD iso for Fedora 10 as the
install media but to make a bootable usbkey for this using Unetbootin a
second time and generate a second bootable Live usbkey.

I still don't know why the method of making a bootable Live usbkey detailed
in the Fedora wiki did not allow the system to boot from the key in this
case. However the bootable key made using Unetbootin worked just fine which
was why I took this method to install.

I suppose it would have been just as easy to make a bootable usbkey copy of
the DVD iso instead of the LiveCD iso although it would have been a little
tighter on disk space since the iso would have to be copied onto the c:
drive in windows to use with Unetbootin. It could have been done on another
machine entirely of course if you have one available.

No doubt other people will post their favourite method for achieving an
install when no optical drive is available but these one or other of the
methods outlined should get you going.

Of course starting with an install to hard drive from a LiveCD image means
that more applications will likely need to be installed after the new system
is running and more work will need to be done to optimise the system later
compared to a DVD install unless the system runs a basic desktop only and
minimal server functions are needed.

3) Firefox is a memory hog. Version 3.1x is supposed to fix this
problem. Its in beta 2 right now.

Yesterday I was doing some online buying/investigating whereby I had 8+
tabs open with a bunch of product images on each tab page. Firefox
outright stalled if I opened one too many. It would become totally
unresponsive for 20 to 60 seconds at times.

For the fun of it, I opened the same 8 tabs with Konqueror and it didn't
bat an eye.

For the record, I am running a T8300 processor with 4 GB of RAM.

Luckily I don't do this sort of thing very often. I have high hopes
that Firefox 3.1 will be better in this regard.

There is another important point that I forgot to add - when copying files
out of the loop mounted iso you also need to copy the "images" directory
into the SAME directory that the iso is residing in so at this stage you
also need to do:

# cp -R /mnt/tmp/images /path/to/ (where /path/to is the path to the
directory holding the Fedora-10-i386-DVD.iso file).

The rest of the guide should work as described.

Do you have a running Fedora system on that machine already?

If so there is a good alternative way to do it which I will detail below.
You simply copy the iso file as an iso file onto the usb key first (i.e. not
using dd).

Then if you have more than one partition on your machine you can copy the
iso onto a non-root partition on your machine, as an iso file.

Then make a directory such as /mnt/tmp and then loop mount the iso onto that
mount point by doing as root:
# mount -o loop /path/to/Fedora-10-i386-DVD.iso/mnt/tmp

Now as root still, copy the two key boot files from the iso into the /boot
area:
# cd /boot
# cp /mnt/tmp/isolinux/vmlinuz f10.install
# cp /mnt/tmp/isolinux/initrd.img f10.install.img

Now you have these two files in /boot
Now add a suitable grub stanza to your grub.conf by doing
# cd /boot/grub
# vim grub.conf

Once in the editor add a set of lines after the last normal stanza in this
file that boots Fedora, in the form:
title Fedora 10 Install
root (hd0,5)
kernel /boot/f10.install
initrd /boot/f10.install.img

Make sure that the line with root (hd0,5) matches the line in the previous
stanza so that it picks the correct partition to boot from. i.e. select the
correct drive and partition. Making it the same as the values from another
stanza that boots your normal previous Fedora should be fine.

Exit vim using the "esc" button followed by ":" to get a command prompt and
then "wq" to write the changed file to disk.

Now check the partition and path to the Fedora install iso file that you
have on disk and write it down.

eg Let's say that you have /opt mounted on /dev/sda7 (check using "df -h")
and the path was /opt/isos/Fedora-10-i386-DVD.iso

You need to remember /dev/sda7 and the "relative" path will be
/isos/Fedora-10-i386-DVD.iso

Now all you need to do is to reboot the machine and interrupt grub so that
you can select "Fedora 10 Install" to boot instead of the normal boot
process.

If all has gone well you should now start to boot the Fedora 10 installer -
and be able to start off the install. If you select a hard drive install,
then select /dev/sda7 (or whatever it is on your machine for the partition
containing your iso) and your correct relative path, then the install should
proceed as normal. Note that you will not be able to format the partition
containing your iso during the install.

If you use LVM then you will have to modify this approach accordingly.

This approach allows a full normal install.

If you do not have Linux already on the machine but just Windows then an
alternative is to make a Live usbkey and boot that, and then once running
you can select to install to HD from the desktop, but this has a much
smaller selection of packages available than the DVD install.

On certain netbooks the advertised method of making a Live usbkey may not
work - eg in my Samsung NC-10 that did not work when I first got it - and it
does not have a DVD drive at all! So I ended up making a live usbkey using
Unetbootin (google for it), and that worked fine.

So the basic message is that there are alternative methods to using optical
media for installing Fedora - and of course there are also http, vnc, or
network boot options also. However the DVD iso method from HD I described
above as served me well for some years.

I hope this helps.

You can add another clock applet, and then set the GConf key for
gmt_time on that applet:

gconftool-2 --set --type boolean
/apps/panel/applets//prefs/gmt_time true

(I find the "gconf-editor" package really helpful for mucking around
with GConf -- it ends up in your Accessories > System Tools menu and
is essentially a slick GUI for gconftool-2.)

But I do wish you could add a location for UTC. I haven't looked, but
it might be filed as an enhancement request in the upstream
bugzilla.gnome.org -- if it's not, you could file one.

The system I have is a ClientPro DX5000, Mobo=Intel `Outrigger', PIII -
(1) 866MHz, 133FSB, 256MB RIMM Ram, PATA 200GB HD, w/2GB swap.

I found that FF w/256MB system RAM puts my system in high swap and
extremely slow system response (mouse movement is really jerky). The vCard
that I have is a GeForce 7600, so that is not the problem, but imo, the
lack of

system memory?

Killing FF greatly restores system performance. It seems that the minimum
system RAM should be no less than 512MB, perhaps? Of course, more RAM
is needed if more services/apps are added to the original installed
baseline.

Of course, with 256MB RAM, there is no way for me to do F10 installation
off the CD/DVD, it falls flat and very badly at that. RIMM memory is
expensive
and so I held back ($59.99/512MB and I need 2, so that pushes it up
closer to a new
Duo-core mobos with much newer/faster hardware/options and better
performance)

I'm pretty sure more RAM would greatly improve performance, and FF
should be Ok.

I surmise this because FF seems to require a lot of system memory, as I
have another
ClientPro PIII - 667Mhz, w/ onboard Nvidia TNT (32MB ram), but with
512MB system

RAM and FF works fine and is faster performing than on the DX5000.

FireFox just sends drawing commands to the X-Server, if the drivers
are broken its not FireFox fault.

So one needs a highend, fully supported video card to scroll properly
in Firefox/Linux?

Hard to say, as performance is first dependent on the Mobo: CPU/RAM/FSB
and then the vCard,

or so I think.

But now, on Gnome, at least, it isn't. There's no option for quickly
seeing the taskbar clock in UTC instead of local. And the options for

Shouldn't really be so. But, you will be shovelling many megabytes
around when scrolling a page.

e.g. 1280 x 800 pixels x 32 bits (colour) x number of screens/pages

The system needs to be reasonably fast to manage it. Even more so when
the content is animated.

Not at all, just one with good drivers.

For now the proprietary nvidia driver is quite good on GF6+ (latest
version), and the ATI radeon driver too (for cards older than Radeon
HD2x/3x/4x).
The proprietary Catalyst driver is crap, and for Radeon-HD2/3/4 there
is currently no accelerating 2D driver at all - not free and not the
proprietary.

Intel used to be good but is performance-wise quite broken because
they re-wrote large parts of it, so I guess it needs some tuning to
reach old speeds.

Brasero gave me the same warning, but it volunteered to try an overburn.
OK, sez I, let's give it a shot. While the resultant CD passed both
Brasero's verification procedure and Fedora's on-disk verification, it
is the slowest live CD I've ever used -- it took 9 minutes to do the
verification and then boot to the desktop. Even then, it was way too
slow -- as in 14 seconds to open Konsole. The logs were loaded with avc
denials; nothing about hardware problems. Odd, since F10 runs quite
nicely on this box. I also downloaded the DVD and I'll install it on a
spare partition this weekend.

As I understand it, the release engineers came to the point in the
schedule where they had to either release something that would work on
some CD burners and definitely would work for DVD/USB media, or simply
not release a KDE spin of Fedora 11 Alpha. They opted to make sure
KDE users were properly incented to try it out. :-)

yeah, i went with DVD, i just find it odd to release an image that's

Yes, it does go over the limit, guess it is best to use DVD media for that one.

Re: Firefox Running Slow in Linux

2009-02-06 Thread Clemens Eisserer
The problems with FireFox "beeing slow" has two different reaons:

1.) FireFox UI is slow / Scrolling is slow:
Your video driver does not accalerated XRender well, or is slow for
other reaons. (While scrolling and running top, is FireFox eating all
the CPU or Xorg?)
FireFox just sends drawing commands to the X-Server, if the drivers
are broken its not FireFox fault.

2.) FireFox takes long to load / close:
FireFox does exactly the same on Windows as well as on Linux, but Ext3
completly dies when FireFox issues fflush commands to make sure all
files have been written appropriate.

f11 alpha x86_64 live KDE image too large to fit on CD?

2009-02-06 Thread Robert P. J. Day

i downloaded the set of F11 alpha live images and all burned to CD
properly except for the one above, which k3b rejected as being too
large to fit on a CD:

667088896 2009-02-06 13:04 F11-Alpha-i686-Live.iso
731385856 2009-02-06 13:07 F11-Alpha-i686-Live-KDE.iso
671713280 2009-02-06 13:06 F11-Alpha-x86_64-Live.iso
737335296 2009-02-06 13:06 F11-Alpha-x86_64-Live-KDE.iso

that has to be awfully close to the maximum capacity. is that
really too large? and why put out an image that just ever so slightly
goes over the limit? or am i misreading something?

True. My solution for DVD creation is dvdstyler, vcdimager for VCD and SVCD.

I really don't recommend that. Mixing rpm-installed modules and

Are there any that are already installed, as I dont have networking

Many thanks,

Nautilus under Gnome should burn to a DVD. Nautilus is the default file
browser. Put in a DVD and it should open a window and say "Put files in
here and press BURN" to burn.

Alternative: Can you provide an external media source of some kind? USB
flash drive? DVD? Download the brasero RPM and manually install the RPM
(double click on the icon).

The only issue with this is dependencies. The user may not have all the
other files needed when getting just K3b or Brasero.

If the user doesn't have networking working, can he get it working to do
a yum install.

I just did a yum deplist for brasero and ended up with this.

Should have read the page before I replied -- there is such a list on
the wiki right now:

I added this suggestion to the list.

You can use a live CD from the same version. You can use the
instructions on installing from a hard drive to install F10.

http://docs.fedoraproject.org/install-guide/f10/en_US/sn-installing-from-harddrive.html

But I can not find the instructions to make the USB key boot into
the install image. If someone else does not have the URL, or
remember the instructions, you can use the directions for making a
bootable USB drive with the live CD using the install image from the
DVD. (/images/boot.iso)

a simple script that takes a long time but uses ABSOLUTE minimal space

#! /bin/bash

yum -q check-update > /root/check-update

   do
   yum -y update $i

this checks for available updates and puts them into a file.
then it goes through that file one line at a time and installs that package
along with it's dependencies
It cleans up after each install

In theory it does have sound, although on a few of my Fedora-10 systems
pulseaudio problems keep the sound from working for many applications
(not just adobe flash). Maybe you are seeing something similar?

Sorry, I have no advice for the Fedora audio problem in general. It

Possible explanation:
when the system tried to read the hw clock and set the system clock,
it needed info about your timezone (because UTC=no) and tried to
read /etc/localtime, which was a symlink to /usr, which was not
mounted yet.

Do you have a separate /usr partition?

It seems reasonable to me.

installing Fedora 10 from USB Disk On Key

2009-02-06 Thread Mark Ryden
Hello,

I have downloaded Fedora 10 installation iso.

I want to install it from USB disk on key as my DVDrom is not working.

Will this work:
first:
dd if=linux_f10_iso.iso of=/dev/sdb and boot will start installation ?
and then boot from the USB disk on key (after setting the BIOS to boot
from USB disk on key, which is possible with my motherboard)

(/dev/sdb is my USB disk on key).

Second question:
suppose I take a live cd of Feodra 9 and then try to install fedora 10
iso (from the HD) - will such thing work?
Or **MUST** I use a live cd of the same version as the Fedora which I
want to install (namely, the live cd and the fedora iso (which is on the
disk) I am installing must be of the same version, namely fedora 10?

Rgs,
Mark

This was a soft link to '/usr/share/zoneinfo/Asia/Kolkata' on my

What do you mean by system time?
I mean, what is displayed in GNOME/KDE applets or what you see
with "date" or what...

Check (some things, you have already done...) the output of

  date
  date -u
  hwclock
  hwclock -u

then have a look at

  /etc/localtime
  /etc/sysconfig/clock
  /etc/adjtime

check if you have a TZ variable involved with

  echo $TZ

and, are you running ntpd?

   /etc/init.d/ntpd status

if yes, what does it say when you do

  ntpq -p

These problems are often caused by something wrong in one place
and "fixing" it in the wrong one is very easy.

Please consider switching to UTC for your hardware clock. It is
better (I know, if you also boot Windows you can't).

I adventurously guess that you have a wrong timezone setting somewhere
and running ntpdate on boot.

Best regards.

Around about 06/02/09 06:13, Ralf Corsepius typed ...

However, on the systems we recently upgraded to Fedora 10 (from F8), the
perl modules installed via CPAN are no longer in perl's @INC search path.

Yes. site_perl has been changed in F10.

Well this is odd, as I've only recently (post F10 upgrade) decided to
start using the 'cpan' command via sudo (from perl-CPAN RPM, prob. a wrapper
doing what the OP does by ,long-hand) for modules not available as RPM...
and that's been working a treat for me. Something like 'sudo cpan' then
'install abc::xyz'.
