Hi Patrick,

The upstream Sun plugin does not support Chromium on Linux yet. The next
generation IcedTea Plugin does support chromium:

http://dbhole.wordpress.com/2009/08/26/icedtea-java-plugin-with-chromium-and-firefox-3-6a1/

Since it is still under development however, it is not in F12. You can
manually compile icedtea and get it though. I will try to set up a wiki
page by the end of the day with instructions on how to do it.

Cheers,
Deepak

Wow, nice! 507870 is not the problem with Elluminate on 64-bit though.
The issue with Elluminate had been that the supplied .so's were 32-bit only.
I contacted Elluminate support to ask them about 64-bit status a couple
of months ago and I was told it was 32-bit only at that time.

Good to know that it supports 64 now as well!

You are correct. Elluminate uses JNI code and the accompanying .so's are
32-bit only. It cannot work with any 64-bit JVM (IcedTea or Sun).
It does work with the 32-bit IcedTea though.

You won't be able to add slaves afterwards. They can only be done when
the alternative is installed. As for adding them for the Sun JRE/JDK,
the easiest way is to see what the openjdk rpm does and replace the
paths with where you install the Sun VM. To see what the openjdk rpms
do, you can run 'rpm -q --scripts java-1.6.0-openjdk{,-devel,-plugin}'

No, the Auto/Manual mode only decides which group is chosen. In Auto mode,
the group with highest priority is always selected. In manual, whatever is
selected stays that way even if a higher priority group is installed.

PS: Out of curiosity.. why do you need the Sun VM? Is something lacking
in OpenJDK?

I believe you're thinking of java-*-sun-compat packages from JPackage
(mentioned on that page). The compat package depends on the RPM from
Sun, and sets up the proper alternatives. Unfortunately, they haven't
been updated for a while:

Hmm, outside of removing it from yum, I am not sure if it is possible to
create an RPM conflict based on arch. We could create a dummy provides
based on arch, and have those conflict... I've never tried it though so
I am not sure how well it would work.

Yep, so that is definitely the problem. The alternatives seem to be
messed up. Not really sure why that happened. Can you paste the output
of:

alternatives --display libjavaplugin.so.x86_64 ?

(that will tell me if just the link is bad, or if the alternatives

Alright, so that link looks good. We need to figure out now if that plugin
exists, and if mozilla is expected to be seeing it. So, can you post the
output of:

ls -l /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.6.0-openjdk.x86_64/lib/amd64/gcjwebplugin.so

and:

ls -l /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/*java*

Hi Steve,

If you type in about:plugins in the address bar and hit enter, do you
see Java in the list that shows up?

If it does not, can you paste the output of:
ls -l /etc/alternatives/*javaplugin*

Do you mean the login at
 https://live.webtradingonline.com/web/webtrading.aspx ?

 It is a flash application.

 This works fine on FF 3.0.1 and Java(TM) Plug-in 1.6.0_07-b06 on RHELv5.
It does not work on FF 3.0.1 with:

GCJ Web Browser Plugin (using IcedTea) 1.2

 File name: gcjwebplugin.so
The GCJ Web Browser Plugin (using IcedTea) executes Java applets.

That should not be necessary. Multiple versions of multiple VM's can
co-exist peacefully. I have had machines with different versions of 4
jvms (IBM/BEA/Sun/IcedTea) and they have been fine. It appears there is
some issue with setup on your end.

Right, once you have java-1.6.0-openjdk installed, "java" should work.

Only Sun rpms install in /usr/java AFAIK. Removing those rpms should
clean up that directory. Alternatively, those dirs may have come from
manually extracting the Sun binary distribution, in which case you can
just rm -rf them to clean up.

Everything extracted by the Sun .bin is in a single dir, so removing that
should be enough.

openjdk in Fedora 9 currently uses the GCJ web plugin, which lacks
LiveConnect support. So sites that make use of that will not work. We
are working on that support, and you can always check out iced tea and
try out the new experimental plugin if you like to live on the edge :)

The environment picked up by the browser plugin is dependent on where
the linked .so points to. If you want to use the Sun plugin for example,
make sure that the .so in the plugins dir (~/.mozilla/plugins/ or
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins) is a _symlink_ to the .so in the java dir.
Copying the file will probably not work..

For example, if you want to use the vm in /usr/java/jdk1.5.0_10/ , make
sure you have a link:

libjavaplug
