RE: fedora 9 and an nvidia 7200gs video card

2009-01-13 Thread Don Raikes
Thanks for this info:

Unfortunately, once I installed the rpmfusion yum configuration files, and
search for the kmod-nvidia package as indicated on the howto page, I didn't
find any packages.

Oh well I also discovered that it helps to make sure the card itself is firmly
seated in the pci slot. I opened the case up again this morning and made sure
it was seated firmly, and reran /sbin/lspci and this time it showed the nvidia
geforce 72 card :-)

I manually edited /etc/X11/xorg.conf and changed the driver from radeon to vesa
and now I can at least get into gnome using startx.

Wouldn't it be just better to use the rpmfusion packaged ones. And I
even remember there have been mentioned on this list that the driver
directly from nvidia can break things in your system.

Just install the rpmfusion:

su -c 'rpm -Uvh
http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm

http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm'

And use instructions in here to install the correct driver for your
card. http://rpmfusion.org/Howto/nVidia

I have never had problems with rpmfusion drivers except that they
usually update for the new kernel day or two later than it's out for
fedora, but I have been able to live with that. And as extra benefit you
can just uninstall them with yum when there is some problems.

fedora 9 and an nvidia 7200gs video card

2009-01-12 Thread Don Raikes
Hi all,

I have fedora 9 installed on my gateway desktop and it was working fine except
for the fact that my video card died.

I just installed a new nvidia 7200gs card (the nvidia 84000gs card wouldn't
fit).

Now when I try to run gnome, I get a message saying no devices were found. I am
assuming I need to install some drivers, but cannot find any for linux 32-bit.

Does anyone know where those pesky drivers are?

what happens if you enter 'clear'?

When I enter clear, the visible display (brltty) seems ok for a few minutes or
perhaps a few lines, then I run into the lines again.

My son was watching the system while it was rebooting the other day, and he
said that the display is all messed up even as it is rebooting. I think perhaps
my video card is failing.
also, being curious about assistance for impaired vision, i ran a google-linux
search of 'brltty' which yielded 27,900 hits. on first page, i found a link,

with a link to brltty mailing list.

much luck to you.

at least there is no external port for it :-)

Stick with the motherboard's onboard Intel graphics. Supports 3D and works
great on the modern desktop. No proprietary drivers required. Just install
system and go!

fedora 10: best video card

2008-12-29 Thread Don Raikes
Hi everyone,

The video card on my gateway desktop has failed, so as I shop for a new one, I
am wondering what cards are best with fedora 10.

I work mostly at run leve l 3 (console), with occassions when I go into the
gnome desktop.

I ddo not play any games, and as yet have not had a reason to watch any movies
on my fedora system, but that may change.

best video card for fedora 10

2008-12-29 Thread Don Raikes
Hi everyone,

I have been watching this list for a while.
The ati radeon video card on my gateway desktop has failed, so I am starting to
look for a new video card, and am wondering which is the best for fedora 10.

I will do most of my workin console mode ( run level 3), and some work in the
gnome desktop.

I am not a gamer of any sort, and do not plan on watching many (if any dvd's)
on it. I just need basic video capabilities, and don't want ot spend a ton of
money.

Any suggestions appreciated.

help! can't login

2008-12-29 Thread Don Raikes
Hi all,

I have fedora 10 installed on my gateway desktop.
It has been running fine for several weeks.

Over the weekend, I had ot reboot the system, and when the grub boot menu
appears, the system just locks up.

I have no keyboard control, and cannot get the system to proceed at all.

There is only one entry in my menu.lst file, which is the same entry that has
been there for a month now.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

fedora 10 can't get past boot menu

2008-12-29 Thread Don Raikes
Hello,

I have had fedora 10 running fine for several weeks.
Over the weekend, I noticed that there was an error message displayed on the
console something about a general protection error.

Everything was locked up, so I performed a hard reboot of the system. Now The
system gets to the grub boot menu, but at that point, I can't do anything. The
keyboard does not respond at all.

The system is configured to boot to level 3 (console) because I am a blind user
and prefer to use command-line as much as possible.

System configuration:

Gateway 7200X
4 gb ram
250 gb harddrive
ati radeon 9200 video card
usb keyboard
marvel gigabit network controller.

I would prefer not ot have to re-install if possible, but so far I have no way
to get logged into the system.

Hi Don.

I'm not too up to speed on USB audio apps, apart from my USB midi keyboard,
but I'll have a go to start things off.

Is this on a laptop, or a PC? Which make, and model?

I assume that the sounds are working on F10, apart from the headset problem.

With the headset unplugged, post back the output from the commands below.

cat /proc/asound/cards
/sbin/lsmod | grep snd

If you have a laptop, with built in webcam, and mike, you will probably see
lsmod showing the snd-usb-audio module loaded, and the output from,
cat /proc/asound/cards will also show a card entry (perhaps card1, or card2)
for a USB device (a webcam's mike perhaps).

Anyway. Post back the output from running the commands above, and we'll take
it from there.

All the best.

Nigel.

It is often simpler to find apps by doing a grep -r of the
/usr/share/applications .desktop files than to figure out where
the heck they are hidden in the menus :-). Once you find the
right .desktop file look for the Exec= line to see what program
to run.

weird graphics characters when logged into runlevel 3

2008-12-22 Thread Don Raikes
Hello,

When I boot into run level 3 (console mode), I "see" a lot of random graphics
characters on my display.

Actually I am blind, and am running brltty which shows "?" characters where
there are graphics characters.

My daughter looked at teh screen a few days ago and said there were indeed
single and double virtical lines running through the display making it almost
impossible to see anything else on the display.

System configuration:
Gateway desktop with a radeon 9600 video card, dell 9000 monitor
fedora 10 with all updates applied from yum.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

BTW: when I run gnome, and open a terminal window the problem is not present.

RE: OT: "Linux holds back the kids"

2008-12-16 Thread Don Raikes
I agree wholeheartedly. My oldest son is in college (ready to graduate this
year), and last christmas break he converted his laptop to ubuntu. When my
youngest son had problems with vista on his brand-new laptop, he installed
ubuntu as a dual boot and was able to use it for everything except for playing
some online games he liked.

So the kids do like linux once they get to know it.

Dear all,

This is somewhat OT, but in light of this, I have to disagree with that teacher
who made the claim.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/12/15/helios_linux_texas_teacher/

I am a math teacher at a high school in Texas and I have 10 machines running
Linux, 8 running Fedora 10, one running Fedora 8, and the other running
OpenSuse 11.0(just updated). My students at first did not seem to like the
Linux machines, but now they are at home with them and some of them asked me
for copies and I gladly gave them a Fedora 10 install DVD. I have been running
Linux at school since 2002/2003 and my students asked me what version of
"Windows" were my machines?. I told them it was Linux, one was Mandrake 9,
another was Red Hat 9. Machines worked beautifully and did the job I wanted.
I told them about Linux, some students actually graduated and use Linux, only
that they prefer Ubuntu and they come and tell me about it. They tell me
it(Ubuntu) picks up the wireless and your Fedora does not. I tell them as long
as it works and it is Linux that I am very happy that they are running it.
Sorry to take up your time. I hope you enjoy
reading the article if you get to it.

Regards,

Antonio

fedora 10 and an ati 9600 graphics card

2008-12-15 Thread Don Raikes
Hi,

I recently installed fedora 10 onto my gateway desktop system. The system has
an ATI 9600 graphics card, nad when I am running in console mode (which I do
frequently), my braille display is showing a lot of random graphics characters.

My daughter looked at the display a week ago or so, and said there were a bunch
of single and double virtical lines covering the display.

Is there a new driver I need, or an old driver I need for this graphics card to
enable this system to work properly?
