Disable root login via SSH
Hi I followed the steps on http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/linux/security-tip-disable-root-ssh-login-on-linux http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=47795 to disbale root log via ssh, however after doing it I am still able to log in as root. Also I have notice the option PermitRootLogin was no in the ssh_config file, so I added it in the file myself. Is there another way to do it? Re: F10 : HP Pavillion dv6000 workin very slow with battery
Hi Try by double clicking on the power icon. There you should be an option which will allow you to change the CPU performance. Under KDE you will see Battery power in the options box. Then under that you will see CPU frequency scaling policy. Gnome I am not sure. Hope it helps. Log Files
Hi Thanks to all who gave me information on how to setup a mail server. I have learn alot from it. Sadly the project has been cancelled. I do need help again. I would like to know if Fedora has a log file which log all events by all users and where can I found it? Also if possible, can such a log file be created if there is not such a log file. Once again, you do not need to give me the exact info, just point me in the right direction. I like to figure out these kind of things. Striata Reader & FC 10
Hi I am trying to install Striata reader in order to open some documents. If I try to install with KPackageKit it tells me that it requires a GPG key. So I tried yum and disabled the GPG check in the yum.conf file. Striata then installs fine, but as soon as you run the program it just hangs. I am trying to install striata-reader-1.0-27-linux-2.4-intel.rpm package which I have downloaded from the Striata site itself. I also downloaded the Windows version and install it with Wine, but no luck there either. Can anyone help, please? E-mail Server
Hi I have been tasked to commissioned an e-mail server in the first quarter of next year. I got this task because I am the only one at work that plays and have a small bit of understanding of how Linux work. So, I am on a research spree. I have already had a look at the following sites: The Linux document project How to forge Flurdy.com I do not ask for step by step instructions, although it will be nice, however I ask that you guys will point me to resources on the internet that may help me in this regard. Thank you very much Regards Leon -- fedora-list mailing list fedora-list@redhat.com To unsubscribe: https://www.redhat.com/mailman/listinfo/fedora-list Guidelines: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate/MailingListGuidelines
Metadata File
Hi I am having problems updating FC9. I receive the following error message when it comes to the updates-newkey repo: [Errno -1] Metadata file does not match checksum This message comes back from all mirror sites. This is now happening for the last week and a half. What can I do to fix this. Re: FC9 NetworkManager & WPA
Hi Picture this scenario: You plug in your new wireless router, it has no security settings. You configure it using the HTTP webserver, and your passwords (any you set into it) are part of the HTML source code, viewable by anyone else at the same time. Your browser may display them as * in the webform, but it's only the browser display that's obscuring them. I feel your pain there. That is the only thing that I do not like about the router. I have over come this problem by adding MAC address filtering under Advanced Tab. With it on you cannot access the router at all unless your PC/laptop's MAC address appears in the 'allow list.' Since I have enabled that no one has hacked into the router. Then also, I usually do the configuration via cable and not wireless. It is much more secure that way - but you knew it already. I do not even do it for sake of convenience. I will walk to the router, plug in the cable and do the necessary configs. If you are still having issues, then maybe you should try a firmware update on the router, I haven't done it myself so I cannot say anything about it. A TIP. Please do not buy a D-Link ADSL router and try to get it talking with the wireless router. It is an absolute nightmare. It took me a whole day to get it going properly. The shocking thing is that according to the manual it is not possible. A solution - Huawei E220 USB Modem
Hi Thanks for all the help. Both my problems have been solved 1. Getting Yum through a proxy server 2. Codecs - thanks Tim for that detailed reply Today I would like to provide a solution to a problem. See it is easy to ask questions and tap information. Hopefully I can make someone's day for a change. I have been struggling to get my USB E220 modem going for a while now - 3 Months to be exact. Last night I stumbled upon a solution. Quick background I am running Fedora Core 9 with KDE 4.0 with kernel 2.6.25.14-108.fc9.i686. This should fix the issue of the modem continuously restarting. You will have to edit this file "/usr/share/hal/fdi/preprobe/10osvendor/20-broken-usb-sticks.fdi" and add to it the following: true Then I used the Network Manager applet to to configure the APN settings under the Mobile Broadband tab. I know about the Betavine project and those guys do and excellent job. I just do not use the beta software because the last time I did it I had more problems than solutions. I do check there website twice a week to see if the final release of version 2 of the software is not yet released. Maybe not the best way, but at least and alternative. This should also work for Gnome but I cannot guarantee it. I do know that I get HSDPA speed although KDE only shows it as a GPRS or GSM connection. Codecs
Hi The other day I had a problem getting yum through a proxy - that one I have solved and thanks for the help that I have received from you guys - I was pointed in the right direction. I am looking for codecs so that I can play my AVI, and other audio formats. I have followed the steps listed at http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-fedora9-gnome-p5, however without any success. When I try to play avi files, it still points me to a site where I can purchase the codecs. In Ubuntu, which I used before moving to Fedora, I only needed to download the Ubuntu-restricted package and it worked. I have searched on Google, but also with no luck unless I have searched in a stupid way. Please, just point me again in the right direction, like a website - I like playing around and figure the things out myself. 13. Re: FC9 NetworkManager & WPA (Tim)
Hi I had the same problem the other day. After choosing it manually from lists of available authentication methods it worked - as the other guy says, make sure the router is configured with WPA. I have noticed that I had to try several times before it connected. So if it does not connect the first time, try again. It will authenticate eventually and once it gets that done it will be fine. Yip, Dlink router is a real bastard. I have set up for my parents home and it works fine. Hi Can you guys please help me. I have tried now several ways to get yum going from behind a proxy server. In fact I have locked my account on 14 domain controllers today on our enterprise network. I ahve tried adding the the proxy settings in the yum.conf file as per certain forums. I have tried the export http_proxy option. Still none is working.
