We are forming a 'GNU/Linux User Group of KGEC' in our college. The Final Details can be found here: http://groups.google.co.in/group/kgeclug/browse_thread/thread/43d14f78c94f77c4 We have a 'free media program' for the members of 'GNU/Linux User Group of KGEC'. Our group is not receiving any funds for its functioning from the college. So, we have applied one time membership fees and the head of this group from college. If the group fund have less funds, it means less overall activity like organizing workshops. We also have a inauguration + FOSS Event day on 18th April 2009. It also has a FAD ie, Fedora Workshop. link: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraEvents/KGEC_LUG So, we request fedora to sponsor our FAD and the 'Free media Program' of 'GNU/Linux User Group of KGEC'. Things we Request: 1) 100 Fedora 10 CDs and/or DVDs. 2) Goodies like stikers and badges. 3) Some Fedora fliers to be given to participants. The members of the LUG can request free media of any available Distribution to the core committee. (This is only possible if the FOSS Community helps by providing CD's and DVD's, else interested candidates will have to get blank CD's or DVD's) 9.The members of LUG can post all their Linux related problems in the Mailing List and can also help with the solution of others problem. The Mailing List will have even experts from the FOSS community to guide and help with the solution. What is there for a LUG Member? 1. Feedback from better people 2. Solutions to problems that he himself can not fix 3. Industry standard skills in documentation and planning 4. Online code portfolio for potential recruiters 5. We will approach with this concepts to other departments also for their labs. (They are also Linux users but with not sufficient knowledge.) 9) I am a Fedora Ambassador and am trying to help them. 10) The Official Inauguration will be done in the 2nd week of April (date not yet Fixed, Proposals welcome) 11) To manage the required funds, there's a option to apply membership fees. Pros and Cons We think: Pro's: 1) The core-Committee members can have live experimentation on the college computers and get things working. 2) Students who don't have computers or is not willing to experiment, will also get the opportunity to gain the knowledge and necessary skills. 3) We can deploy industry standard mechanisms to help maintain machines easier. 4) The core-committee members become experts and there is a chain effect followed by them. 5) Free Publicity through Posters about KGEC LUG. Con's: 1) The LUG will be more like an organization and not a group. 2) If we lack response, it may be difficult. We are also thinking of organizing classes and workshops which depends on response and interest in core-committee. We have seen the enthusiasm in students during installfest and so, we are hoping for a Success.. The Official Inauguration will be done in the 2nd week of April (date not yet Fixed, Proposals welcome). We will also include FOSS events during this time and I also request the FOSS community to help me out with the events Suggestions are Welcome as reply.. -- fedora-list mailing list fedora-list@redhat.com To unsubscribe:

Re: Want to start a LUG with all fedora support.
This should not be the case. There should be people using different distros in a LUG. Only then learning new things is possible. Doesn't matter even if you are a Fedora Ambassador. Other distros should also get representation in a LUG. I agree that LUGs should be distro-neutral, in terms of welcoming everyone who wants to learn and participate. I restarted the LUG in my area, for instance, and we are open to people of all distros -- we have users of Fedora, openSUSE, CentOS, Slax, Ubuntu, RHEL, and a few others. That's the way all LUGs should be, in my opinion. I agree with all the arguments above I will definitely include different Distributions in the LUG. the fact that I am giving Emphasis on fedora is that I am able to give support in fedora and its just a begining. Maximum students (users) here have not even used a single distribution till now. The internet speed is also a problem here. It takes a whole day after install to initially setup and install software's from the internet. I have many different distributions which will be incorporated in the LUG but for the time being I have decided to promote fedora more because I have the fedora mirror and know how. one more success: We have installed and setup the library computer with fedora 10. This computer is used by students for searching the books and their status.
