Fedora 9 Rescue CD, where?

2008-10-28 Thread S P Arif Sahari Wibowo

Hi!

Do you know where I can find Fedora 9 Rescue CD ISO? I look
everywhere under
ftp://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/9/
but could not find it.

For Fedora 8, the rescue CD was here:
ftp://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/releases/8/Fedora/i386/iso/Fedora-8-i386-rescuecd.iso

But nothing like that under Fedora 9 directory.

Thanks!

Problem installing on Realtek RTL8102EL, Intel 945GC / ICH7 Chipset, Biostar G31-M7 TE motherboard

2008-11-12 Thread S P Arif Sahari Wibowo

Hi!

I tried to install Fedora 9 through network, but I meet a
problem that Fedora installer (or its Live CD) cannot recognize
the integral ethernet controller Realtek RTL8102EL. The log
shows r8169 driver is loaded, but not eth interface is
activated.

Other issue also that sounds controller does not seems to be
recognized as well. Also the GUI when loaded reported that there
was a kernel failure, but looking at the log I cannot find what
failure it was.

I created sysreport of the system just after boot up, which can
be found here:
http://arifsaha.xtreemhost.com/sysreport-localhost.localdomain.20081112174436.tar.bz2

The specification is as follow:

Processor Intel Celeron Dual-Core E1200, 1.6Ghz, 800Mhz, 512KB Cache
Motherboard Biostar G31-M7 TE Intel 945GC + ICH7 Chipset
http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en-us/mb/content.php?S_ID=363
Memory 1GB DDR2
GraphicsIntel Media Accelerator Graphic
Hard Drive 160GB 7200rpm Serial ATA
Optical Drive 18x DVDR/RW Writer
Sound Card 5.1 HD Audio

Any idea?

Thanks!

Really? I guess that website is not so good, then. I am pretty
sure I am not reading 97 pages before creating my own rpm

With grim determination in their eyes they marched off to do

AFAIK .deb file also lacking some capabilities of rpm, e.g. the
one hit me before is that .deb file can only have 1 source file
and 1 patch file, while rpm can have multiple source files and
multiple patch files.

I can only conclude there is something fundamentally wrong
with the simplicity factor in rpms :-).

It probably true, being more powerful tools may make it
difficult to be simple at the same time. :-)

Applications Dock functionality (launcher, lister, switcher combined), no eye candy required?

2009-07-15 Thread S P Arif Sahari Wibowo

Hi!

I am looking for an application which can function as
applications dock (combined functions of applications launcher,
lister and switcher), similar to OS X dock, but I don't need the
eye candy (transparency, 3d effect, icon enlargement, bouncing
icon, etc.) (in fact, when I use OS X, I set its dock visual
effect to minimum). I actually prefer low weight low resources
application, something like WindowMaker's application dock (not
its widget dock) but works well with other desktop environment
(i.e. can do drag & drop). It should also available in various
distro, but specifically at present I need it to run in Fedora.

I tried Docker, but when I run it nothing show up in the screen.
I tried SimDock, but it has several issues (does not seems to
show an application is running, has errors, does not work well
with GNOME). I tried GNOME Do (to get its Docky) but it has
error (Failed to contact configuration server) that I still
debug. Avant WM and CairoDock seems to be too heavy weight (need
composited screen).

Any other suggestion? Thanks!

Well, that statement is definitely incorrect since WindowMaker
windows manager do have its own dock (with combined function of
applications launcher, lister and switcher), without requiring
composited screen or any heavy animation. Unfortunately it is
tied to WindowMaker.

I just want to know whether there are other applications like
that outside WindowMaker.

The variable $PIPESTATUS is just for that.

Re: Virtualization for Beginner

Using real / raw / physical partition in a virtual machine can

is on the same disk as the primary OS, since the VM will have
access to the whole disk (not just the partition), and that
means that 2 running OS accessing the same HD. If there is
something wrong with the running VM, the HD can be corrupted.

Anyway, AFAIK in the VirtualBox user manual there is a section
about using real / raw / physical disk / partitions: how, why,
adn the risks. You may have to run it from command line.

The choices I have is to:
1) Create new hard disk
2) Use existing hard disk

and then it has a drop down for `media'

What exactly does it mean by choice (2)?

Means using virtual disk image created earlier from other VM
session.

Do I have to use the XP CD/DVD and create a NEW hard disk
partition or what? What are my options?

You should create new image, and - yes - using a MS Windows XP
CD/DVD to install new MS Windows XP installation. Yes you will
need to activate this installation later. This is the most
straightforward method to use VM.

There is another path by migrating exiting Windows installation,
but AFAIK that can be tricky as well.
