[Fedora-livecd-list] Persistence issues in F9, fixed in F10?

2008-11-25 Thread Todd N
Hello,

There are some issues in Fedora 9 when using a bootable USB stick with a
persistent overlay (created using livecd-iso-to-disk).  Filling up the overlay
renders the USB stick non-bootable.  Whatever the reason for this, has the
issue been resolved in Fedora 10?

Also, once desired changes have been made to files on the USB, using the
persistent overlay, is there a way (in Fedora 9 or 10) to disable further
writes to the overlay, basically freezing it so that no further permanent
changes can be made?

Thanks in advance for any input.
Todd

[Fedora-livecd-list] error reading information on service xxxx

2008-10-15 Thread Todd N
Hello,

During the boot process for a Live CD I have created with livecd-creator, I am
getting error messages of the format

error reading information on service xx: No such file or directory

I am getting 6 such messages.  The services listed are bluetooth, isdn,
rpcgssd, rpcidmapd, rpcsvcgssd, and sendmail.  None of these packages appear to
be installed or running on my system.  I'd like to get rid of these messages if
possible.  Any thoughts?

Thanks much,
Todd

[Fedora-livecd-list] Fonts are getting chopped

2008-09-18 Thread Todd N

Hello,

When booted to a Live CD produced with livecd-tools, and using the Gnome
desktop, text on the desktop itself, and in the Firefox web browser, is
displayed with parts of letters being chopped off.  For the desktop itself,
part of the first letter of each line of text is truncated on the left.  In
Firefox (version 3.0.1 in my case), lines of text are truncated on the top
(about the upper 15-20% of every line).

Has anyone else seen this, and if so do you know a way around it?  If you'd
like more details of my setup here, or more clarification of the problem (I
have screen shots) please let me know.

Thanks much,
Todd

Updating Yum requires pygpgme - not in mirror

2008-09-12 Thread Todd N
Hello,

I am trying to update yum from version 3.2.8 to version 3.2.19 on my Fedora 8
system.  When I run yum update yum, I get a message indicating a missing
dependency, that pygpgme is needed by package yum.  However, there is no
package pygpgme on any of the mirrors I have checked.  Will this
package eventually update to the mirrors?

Any answers are appreciated.

Thanks,
Todd

[Fedora-livecd-list] Persistence and /mnt/live

2008-07-15 Thread Todd N
Hello,

I have noticed that when I do NOT have persistence installed on a bootable USB
drive (or when I have a bootable CD), the path to the boot media is available
as /mnt/live.  However, when I include persistence on a bootable USB, there is
no path to the boot media, and the path /mnt/live exists but is empty.  (The
USB was created using livecd-iso-to-disk from a Live CD that was created with
livecd-creator.)

As I am counting on pulling several files in from the boot media (but outside
the squashfs file system) into my local file system on bootup, it is important
that there be consistency in where I might find these files, whether or not
persistence is installed on the boot media.

Can the /mnt/live path be enabled on a bootable USB with persistence installed?

Also, another possibility might be to include the external files I need in the
actual persistence overlay.  Can I move files into this area?  If so I will not
need to do surgery on the squashfs file system.

Thanks much for any help that can be offered.

[Fedora-livecd-list] Issue with SELinux and /mnt/live on Fedora Live CD

2008-07-08 Thread Todd N
Hello,

I'm trying to use openvpn on a Fedora Live CD built using livecd-creator.  I'd
like to have openvpn grab the required certificates and keys from somewhere
other than /etc/openvpn - specifically a directory under /mnt/live.  However,
on configuring such a VPN connection, when trying to actually connect to it,
SELinux balks, returning the following error:

SELinux is preventing openvpn (openvpn_t) search to ./mnt (mnt_t).

What can I do within SELinux to allow openvpn to access an external file
system?  Is there a specific policy change that I can make to allow this type
of access?

Thanks for any help that can be offered.  If you need any more information,
please let me know.

Thanks much for the info, Jeremy.  I ran the mkisofs script as you specified
below (we are on an i386 architecture) and re-burned a CD from the
newly-created ISO file.  On booting, it gets to the point where it says
Booting the kernel., hangs for a few seconds, then the following appears on
the screen:

Create symlink /dev/root and then exit this shell to continue the boot sequence.

Any thoughts?  Something obvious I am missing?

Is there a way I can modify the ISO image to include my per-user files on

You'll have to run mkisofs with the appropriate options for making the
CD bootable on your arch. On x86, that's something like 'mkisofs -b
isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/isolinux.cat -no-emul-boot
-boot-info-table -boot-load-size 4 '

Alternately, you can also use the --base-on support to build derivative
images

[Fedora-livecd-list] removing Install to Hard Drive option

2008-06-25 Thread Todd N
Hello,

Does anyone know of a way to disable the appearance of the Install to Hard
Drive icon on the Live CD user's GNOME desktop?  I see that a
liveinst.desktop file gets placed in the user's ~/Desktop directory, but I'm
not sure what moves it there.  It would be preferable for us if this file could
be kept out of the Desktop directory altogether.

As always, any help and ideas are appreciated.

[Fedora-livecd-list] Time Zone issues

2008-06-25 Thread Todd N
Hello,

I am having an issue trying to get my Live CD to be created with the correct
timezone.  I see in livecd-fedora-9-base-desktop.ks the timezone parameter is
set by default to US/Eastern.  I have commented that out (with the standard #)
and added a line so that the following now shows:

#timezone US/Eastern
timezone America/Chicago

On my new Live CD, however, on doing the date command I get the following:

Wed Jun 25 14:40:05 EDT 2008

Is there something I am missing?  I would have expected the time zone to show
as CDT.

Any help is appreciated.

[Fedora-livecd-list] F9 Install server locks up on selinux-policy-targeted

2008-06-19 Thread Todd N
Hello,

I'm attempting to create a Fedora 9 Live CD on a Fedora 9 system.  The

selinux-policy-targeted, the following message appears on my screen:

libsemanage.dbase_llist_query:  could not query record value

and then the system I am using to do the livecd creation freezes up
completely.  I cannot even use Alt-F1, Alt-F2, etc. to switch between terminals.

Any help, pointers, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Graphical windows auto-maximizing - annoying

2008-05-28 Thread Todd N
Hello,

In F9, graphical windows in GNOME are exhibiting some bizarre, or at least
unexpected, behavior. When a window is dragged across the screen, it
automatically maximizes itself when its title bar nears the top of the display.
Is this an intentional enhancement to window behavior, or is it some sort of
bug? If not a bug, then is there a way to disable this feature? We did notice
that if you hold down the mouse button for a few seconds before beginning to
drag the window, the auto-maximize does not happen. However, this is an extra
thing to have to remember.

  Any thoughts/solutions?

  Thanks,
  Todd

LiveCD and openvpn configs

2008-05-23 Thread Todd N
  Hello,

Using the livecd-tools package, I'm trying to build a Live CD that is set up
with a working openvpn client. I have taken what I think are all the config
settings for openvpn (from an already existing, configured OS with a functional
openvpn setup), and placed them in /etc/skel in the Live CD's ext3 filesystem.
(I got the configs from /home/user/.gconf/system/networking/connections.) I
am also creating a user in the %post section of the pertinent kickstart file.

I would expect that when the Live CD is booted, the user will be created and
the openvpn settings will be copied in from /etc/skel to that user's home
directory.

On booting the Live CD I create, when first logging into the user's desktop
the customized openvpn settings do not seem to be present. However, if I log
out of that user and then log back in, the settings are there. Any ideas on
what I might be doing wrong? Am I missing some other configurations?

I will be happy to clarify if anyone has any questions on what I am asking -
or trying to ask. :-)

  Thanks much,

2008-05-02 Thread Todd N
Thanks, Tim, for the information. OK, here's another one... I'd like to be
able to make a bunch of Live CDs that are identical (with all of our
customizations) EXCEPT for a small bit of information that will be different
for each CD. Is there some special location on the Live CD image that these
per-user configurations can be placed, after the image has been created? My
goal here is to avoid having to run livecd-creator to create a slightly
different image for each individual user. It would be a great help if there
were some override area outside of the Live CD's ext3 (/) file system, such
that any files placed there would take the place of the equivalent files within
the Live CD's already created ext3 system.

  Thanks,
  Todd

There really isn't a great tutorial for things beyond the basics (although if
someone knows of one, please correct me). The mailing list archive is a good
place to find this stuff as long as you throw the right search terms at it.
But, a couple of quickies from my notes:

For non-standard packages, create a basic archive (put the packages in a
directory, run createrepo on that directory) and then add it to your list of
repositories.

Display settings... I believe that's a standard kickstart options. Maybe
someone else will pipe up.

You can directly change firefox-related stuff by editing
/usr/lib/firefox-2.0.0.5/defaults/pref/all-redhat.js
But, the simplest way (for me) to do this and the rest of the things you can to
do is by booting up your livecd, customizing things to taste (e.g. set your
browser config, cookies, etc) and then tar up the appropriate parts of
/home/[username]. Copy that tar file to someplace your kickstart can reach and
then add something in post %nochroot to untar the file copy everything to
/etc/skel/. I've never tried it, but you should (theoretically) be able to
just tar up (make sure you use the permissions flag) the whole user home
directory and just stomp /etc/skel in post %nochroot.

Note, some things seem to be more resistant to this treatment than others. It
appears that when the actual user directory is created some things are
automatically set, overiding settings you throw into /etc/skel. For instance,
I tend to just replace the default desktop graphic file (/usr/blah/blah/blah)
rather than trying to convince /etc/skel to point to my custom graphic.

  * Possible browser cookie(s) added
  * Display settings
  * Installation of non-standard packages (i.e. packages you would not find in
a standard yum repository
  * Other custom changes to individual files

I know that the Kickstart file allows for post install customizations. I am
wondering whether anyone could point me towards a good tutorial that would help
me in setting up these detailed config changes. I am also researching on my
own, but any additional ideas are appreciated.

  Thanks much,
  Todd

Does anyone have any ideas on this? Is what I am proposing possible?

Thanks,

Subject: [Fedora-livecd-list] Building Live CD from externally-created ext3
file system

Hello,

I'm new to the list so pardon me if I break any etiquette rules... it's not
intentional. :-)

The description of the Live CD Creator application found on Fedora's website
includes a section on the steps performed by livecd-creator (see
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraLiveCD/LiveCDHowTo#head-275d791c27ecce3379d1e2cc5cfbd04f5d03af5d
). My question is whether there is a way to build a live CD using a / (ext3)
filesystem created by some other means. Basically I'd like to be able to
perform the last three steps listed in the document referenced above:

* Creates a squashfs file system containing only the ext3 file (compression)
* Configures the boot loader
* Creates an iso9660 bootable CD

We have already built a system and have it working exactly the way we want it.
Is there a way to take that filesystem, compress it, and build the CD without
having to go through the system configuration, package selection, and all the
custom configs at the end? We'd like to build a CD that has maximum
flexibility for compatible hardware.

I appreciate any help that can be offered. Thanks.

Todd

[Fedora-livecd-list] Booting Live CD in VESA mode

2008-04-15 Thread Todd N
Hello,

Is there an easy way to change a boot option for the Live CD, as the system is
booting, so that the generic VESA video driver is used? I have tried adding
video=vesafb vga=791 to the boot options but the systems using the Live CD
(we have tried several different machines with varying hardware) still boot up
using the default driver for their particular video card. It would be nice to
be able to interrupt the boot process to override this default and use the
generic VESA driver.

Any (relevant) thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks,
Todd

boot with 'xdriver=vesa'

Looks like it's working. Thanks much!
