Actually, the gconf stuff goes out of its way to be as annoying and
error prone as the windows registry (I've yet to understand why anyone
would try so hard to imitate such an obviously bad idea).

Not entirely right if you consider things like the GConf database and
the RPM database.


And worse, the dotfiles in home directories that may have 
version-specific attributes that relate to the program versions you ran 
last.

What cache? What registry?

If you're talking about yum, try "yum clean metadata" or "yum clean
all", depending on what you want to do. The first resets the database,
the second also removes downloaded copies of rpm files from the yum
cache (note: it does *not* remove the installed packages).

If that's not what you mean, you need to explain more.
