Fedora 10 and plotters? - OT

2009-06-11 Thread Kevin Kempter
Hi All;

I'm a database consultant so I'm forever printing large database models onto
25 sheets of letter sized paper and taping them together - tiresome.

I've found a used plotter, an HP DesignJet 750C - a 36" color plotter with
automatic roll feed and cutter.

I walked thru part of the cups add printer setup and the 750c is listed as an
option in the printer list.

I'm wondering if anyone out there has any experience running an HP plotter via
Linux, are there any gotcha's? do I have to tweak anything to tell the printer
(and Linux) that I'm printing to 36" paper as opposed to 24"? Will the
automatic roll feed and cutter just work? etc..

Thanks in advance...

I run a vinyl cutter (same idea more interesting "pen") this way. You can
sort of drive it via the print layer but I gave up doing so and use some
scripts to take the HPGL from inkscape as I wanted more control.

There are lots of gotchas with trying to get normal printing working -
all the bitmaps vanish (naturally enough) and there are a lot of bitmaps
lurking in some postscript output.

I have a DesignJet 350C that I use from Linux (FC6), with a 36" roll
feed. The only program I've found that understands "rolls" is the
Gimp - you tell it you have a 36" roll and how much paper to use, and
it fits the print in accordingly. Other programs, I pick "Arch E" for
the paper size.

The actual feed and cut is managed by my printer, not the computer,
although I don't have an automatic cutter.

I have used a large format hp 1050c printer and it is classified as a
plotter by some. It is used via cups as it is a different building.

Maybe you can find a large format printer to meet your requirements.

Just FYI, most (if not all) HP "DesignJet" series are in real life
wide-format inkjet printers, not pen plotters. They're just called
"plotters" because they have a plotter emulator (HPGL) in them, but
they handle rasters just fine.

The HP DesignJet 350C, for example, is a 300 DPI color / 600 DPI black
inkjet that accepts up to 36"x48" (Arch E) sheets or 36" wide rolls.
