Keep in mind that most people make suggestions based on their own
experiences, which are very different from you by virtue of having
different hardware configs.

It's an alternative to VirtualBox which is supported by the upstream kernel
without third-party modules and which just works in Fedora without
installing any third-party stuff. And it's completely Free Software,
whereas VirtualBox has 2 editions, one which is Free Software (the Open
Source Edition (OSE)) and another one which isn't.

Because when you use KVM, you use KVM, not VirtualBox. They are 2 completely
different solutions to virtualization.

You're supposed to set up the RPM Fusion repository as documented on the web
page, then use yum install, not use rpm -ivh directly.

The hint you got to use akmod instead wasn't a good one, all it means is
that the module will be rebuilt from source for your current kernel on your
machine instead of just using the binary already built in RPM Fusion, it
doesn't change the above at all.

The easiest way to do it is to install the package from sun site with PAE

Yup,

1. Make sure rpmfusion repos are installed on system
2. If you have PAE kernel, install kernel headers
 # yum -y install kernel-PAE-devel
3. Install VirtualBox with
 # yum -y install VirtualBox-OSE
4. Reboot or
run
 # service akmods restart
to build kernel module and
 # modprobe vboxdrv
to load it

5. Run Virtualbox by

There are fedora installs for 7 through 11.

The user manual is in .pdf; section 2.3 covers Linux installs.

What its trying to tell you in a wonderfully user intutitive manner is

"Another virtual machine is loaded and you can only have one hypervisor
at a time using the CPU hardware assist"

Or in even plainer English "Hey you don't need virtualbox, the stuff
supplied with Fedora will just work"

It ought to be sufficient to "rmmod kvm" I suspect, however firing up the
virtual machine manager and creating a new virtual machine via kvm should
also "just work"

I don't know what that means, but I believe removing kvm is as simple as:

http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/updates/10/i386/VirtualBox-OSE-kmodsrc-2.1.4-4.fc10.i386.rpm
The former, I have no idea.

Have you tried simply "yum --enable-repo=* install
akmod-VirtualBox-OSE" ?? That should let Yum do all the depency
resolution for you...

Re: Virtual Box install problem on FC10

2009-06-08 Thread Yoram Halberstam
ok, was missing akmods and other bits. I did yum install akmods (woo-oo I'm
getting the hang of linux) and got a whole bunch of stuff with it...

rpm -ivh /home/yoram/Download/akmod-VirtualBox-OSE-2.1.4-2.fc10.i686.rpm

error: Failed dependencies:
VirtualBox-OSE-kmod-common >= 2.1.4 is needed by

VirtualBox-OSE-kmodsrc = 2.1.4 is needed by
akmod-VirtualBox-OSE-2.1.4-2.fc10.i686

What next?

PS: I tried to google "VirtualBox-OSE-kmod-common" without success

Try installing

instead of kmod-VirtualBox. When you reboot, the akmod will build
kmod-Virtualbox for you against your running kernel.

Re: Virtual Box install problem on FC10

2009-06-08 Thread Yoram Halberstam
Ok guys,

You'll have to excuse my inexperience, I'm pulling my hairs.

I uninstalled the rpm package (the one where I have to run the setup and had
kvm problem). I've tried to find the RPMFusion for PAE. I found

http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/updates/testing/10/i386/repoview/kmod-VirtualBox-OSE-PAE.html

rpm -iv kmod-VirtualBox-OSE-PAE-2.1.4-2.fc10.4.i686.rpm

error: Failed dependencies:
kmod-VirtualBox-OSE-2.6.29.4-75.fc10.i686.PAE >= 2.1.4-2.fc10.4 is
needed by kmod-VirtualBox-OSE-PAE-2.1.4-2.fc10.4.i686

So I ran

--

rpm -ivh
kmod-VirtualBox-OSE-2.6.29.4-75.fc10.i686.PAE-2.1.4-2.fc10.4.i686.rpm

error: Failed dependencies:
VirtualBox-OSE-kmod-common >= 2.1.4 is needed by
kmod-VirtualBox-OSE-2.6.29.4-75.fc10.i686.PAE-2.1.4-2.fc10.4.i686
kernel-uname-r = 2.6.29.4-75.fc10.i686.PAE is needed by
kmod-VirtualBox-OSE-2.6.29.4-75.fc10.i686.PAE-2.1.4-2.fc10.4.i686

-

Don't work but a
uname -a returns Linux desktop.lan 2.6.27.24-170.2.68.fc10.i686.PAE #1 SMP
Wed May 20 22:58:30 EDT 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

note .27 (my kernel) and it is waiting for .29 (rpm)

So, is there out there a virtualbox compiled for my kernel. If not, what's
the best solution? That I recompile my kernel with the kvm thingy off? Wait
for FC11? anything else?

Thanks

You need kernel-PAE-devel, not kernel-devel.

I had that same issue for awhile until I added the line:

none /proc/bus/usb usbfs devgid=503,devmode=664 0 0

to my /etc/fstab file and then made sure my username was in the group
#503. Once I did that and bounced the box I could at least "see" the
USB devices. After that flakiness lived on but otherwise

I second that. Although I like VBox (for a while there it would run on
the latest kernels when VMware wouldn't) I've never got it to work with
my iPod, Palm or Nokia E65. I enable the appropriate USB paths, but the
devices simply don't appear in the virtual XP machine.

If you're really patient, it is, but waiting 8 hours for TiEmu to build was
a PITA. ;-) As I said, I've done that for the x86_64 packages on
repo.calcforge.org before I got this nice 64-bit laptop I can build my
x86_64 packages on, it was really annoying. And Qt and KDE would probably
take days if not weeks to build in QEMU software emulation.

That's actually pure software emulation, not kqemu. You can't accelerate a
64-bit VM on a 32-bit host at all, not with kqemu nor with anything else.
And pure software emulation is extremely slow (about 50 times slower than
native when building packages, from my experience).

As I said, slower. ;-)

However, once the install is done, it isn't all that bad to use for simple
stuff, and even 50x slower is fast enough to see if things work. It was a proof
of concept, a friend did a Yellow Dog Linux install on the power emulation. It's
fast enough to compile a program 64 bit if needed, that was the goal.

I agree, USB devices are easier to pass through to VirtualBox --
however, I'm testing Rawhide on my personal machine starting this

Got a link to the problems people had? I only tried a direct connection to USB
once, as they say "for educational purposes only," but it seemed to work just
fine. So fine, in fact, that I am tempted to access some hardware using an XP in
VM rather than fighting ndiswrapper.

However, I would expect KVM to be the most efficient VM, just because of direct
kernel support. Note, I haven't benchmarked that in any way.

You may have to enable virtualization in bios.

OK, here I'm finding some problems with KVM. I have a AMD Athlon X2 64
but kvm module doesn't load:

# grep -c svm /proc/cpuinfo
2
# modprobe kvm-amd
FATAL: Error inserting kvm_amd
(/lib/modules/2.6.27.19-170.2.35.fc10.x86_64/kernel/arch/x86/kvm/kvm-amd.ko):
Operation not supported

Now, why is that? I have support for kvm-amd but the module fails to come up.

Any ideas?

Thanks Kevin

The machine I wanted to use to try things out does not have KVM support
which is why I asked but it seems just possible that a VM might work
with qemu/kqemu even without kvm though I will have to just try it and see
what happens - and although slower than kvm maybe it would not so bad that
it is unusable. On the machine in question I am happy to play and if it
does not work then it is not a major loss - but worth learning on!

Well, you can use QEMU and it will be extremely slow. I think the qemu-kvm
binary will fallback to software QEMU emulation if KVM is not supported.

One thing you can use to speed it up a bit in kmod-kqemu which you can found
in the RPM Fusion repository, in the Free section (it got GPLed some time
ago, so it's in the Free section, but Fedora won't carry it because it's
not in the upstream kernel). It's a hack to run some of the code on the
native hardware without needing hardware virtualization. That said, I'm not
sure whether virt-manager will fire up the correct qemu binary and with the
correct options to use kqemu. If you run the regular qemu binary (not
qemu-kvm) with no option, it will pick up kqemu.

That said, AFAIK kqemu doesn't perform anywhere near as well as KVM, also
because kernel code is still emulated entirely in software (there's an
experimental -kernel-kqemu option which tries to use kqemu also for
kernel-space code, but all I ever got out of that option is VM crashes).

I have stuck with VB (after trying kvm) because the interface (mouse, video)
on VB work much better. Using kvm (through qemu) lacks a lot in terms of
interface.

I have been following this thread with some interest as I wanted to try out
KVM to use for both alpha or beta Fedora images, and also to run an XP VM so
that some applications that won't work outside of MS can still be used.

However the box I wanted to try this on does not have the hardware
virtualisation flags that are the first test in the documentation for
running KVM. The question I am unclear about is whether KVM can still be
used but give very slow performance, or does not having the "vmx" flag mean
you can't use KVM at all?

Does anyone have a pointer to a step by step guide for running a VM in F10?
(not VirtualBox)

Is this really needed? Last time I installed an OS in a VM (both KVM
and VMWare) I didn't need any SELinux magic. But that was almost two
years ago, maybe things have changed since.

In that case this has changed since the summer of 07.

VirtualBox OSE is the open source edition, licensed under the GPL.
That is free in both the beer and speech sense.

Notably, one of the several features that VirtualBox OSE omits is the
USB passthrough. In other words, unless you go with the non-free
version, you're not getting any better functionality there than you
would get with KVM.

> >From a Debian geek that uses virtualbox I heard that the version that

VirtualBox OSE is distributed on the Sun site. Whether it's the same
as what's in Debian, I don't know, but it would be odd for Debian to
use a trademarked term and the same name for a package that's not the
same. Given their tendency to exactitude, I'm betting Debian's
virtualbox-ose *is* the same as VirtualBox OSE downloaded from Sun,
but it is *not* the same as VirtualBox, which is non-free. Make
sense?

So hopefully people understand here that when you go with VirtualBox
(*not* the OSE variety), you've just roped yourself into a non-free
solution for a short-term gain. But I'll bet that, as usual, the free
software folks will provide tools to get you from non-free to free
later down the road. For instance, just the other day I converted a
VMWare VMDK image into a flat, dd-style image using the helpful
'qemu-img' command from the qemu package. Voila!

I agree, USB devices are easier to pass through to VirtualBox --
however, I'm testing Rawhide on my personal machine starting this
weekend, which is very close to F11 Beta right now. I'll try to let
the list know what improvements I see in USB device connections to the
guest.

___

I'll second that hands down. That's been my experience.
If you use VirtualBox for too long, you may be tempted to ignore
KVM altogether, which it's better from the kernel functionality viewpoint.
At least that's my understanding.

That's just how I do it. I've installed a WinXp VM in my F10 box.
KVM and QEMU work just fine.
I think VirtualBox may be preferred because it appears more
manageable in the surface.

VirtualBox is free as in free beer, but it's not entirely free as in
free speech. Its license prohibits some use, meaning it can't be free
software. (One of the key freedoms of free software is the freedom to
use it for any purpose.) That's why we don't carry it in Fedora.

I'm surprised that more people don't just install the "Virtualization"
group using yum, and use the Virtual Machine Manager (virt-manager) to
create virtual machines. I do this all the time on my Fedora 10 box
and it works like a charm.

su -c 'yum groupinstall Virtualization ; service libvirtd start'

Then run Applications > System Tools > Virtual Machine Manager.

To install from a CD or DVD ISO image that you have on your hard disk,
make sure you set its SELinux context properly:

  su -c 'chcon -t virt_image_t /path/to/some-os-image.iso'

Look at http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads to download
and http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Documentation for documentation..

The process is very well documented, and I have successfully implemented
this multiple times
