 and since latest updates (but whhat update) the problem with work
area is more than intermittent.
May it be connected to kernel???

work area selector is 2.24.3

I don't know what could have changed it for you, but (assuming you are running 
KDE) to change it back try right-click on the 'work area on the bar' and you 
should see 'Configure Desktops'.  That's where you can set the number.

you don't have to re-start Gnome to see change of preferences in those
windowsactually you don't have to close the Preference Windows to
see changes applied.
