As I said, I'm more than open to different opinions and the merits of these
approaches. You claimed I'd done "actual harm" to Fedora, effectively saying
that your opinions are fact and empirically quantifiable. I welcome and seek
feedback, as this isn't dicta but rather an evolving process; but simply
slamming the practice, citing "actual harm", and then claiming that "..a
guideline will be needed" isn't very constructive.

How about, instead of bashing, we sit down and try to work out how to best do
this -- that is, including the test suite in some form that satisfies both of
us and benefits the community as a whole.

I'd like to see the evidence of any concrete harm done specific to including
the test suites in %_docdir, but I haven't seen any yet, despite repeated
requests. If there is actually any harm caused here, I'd like to correct it.

No I didn't, please read comment 4 again (I guess that's what you're referring
to). But let's not get caught up with this or other word games.

> How about, instead of bashing, we sit down and try to work out how to best do
> this

I have plenty on my plate so no thanks for now. But on a brief look,
FullyTestablePerl looks like a good idea that would pretty much eliminate my
concerns. And Stepan's suggestion at end of comment 9 (+ some real thought
from the packagers whether to ship the tests) would be an improvement in the
meantime.

> I'd like to see the evidence of any concrete harm done specific to including
> the test suites in %_docdir, but I haven't seen any yet

The reasons given in comment 8 demonstrate why I think this stuff is harmful.
IMO it makes affected packages worse than they would be without those issues,
which I think qualifies this practice as harmful. You don't agree with it, but
the "evidence" is there, and one (very insignificant) manifestation of it is
this very bug. Dismissing it as handwaving, FUD or nonexistent is a bit
extreme.

I think it's about time we let this bug rest in peace and continue the
discussion in another more appropriate medium in case someone still has
something to say.

I don't think anyone is playing word games here. I take it you're retracting
your claim?

Good. With perl now shipping /etc/rpm/macros.perl we have a good vehicle for
delivery of any helper macros.

If there's other "evidence", that is, something "actively harmful", I'd
appreciate it if you could point it out, so I could at least own up to it and
fix it.

I don't know what you're referring to. This is nothing personal, and I haven't
claimed you having done actual harm to Fedora; I simply don't know if you
consistently follow this practice I find harmful and I'm not after anyone.
Comment 4 *is* what I think and I'm not retracting that (note "when done as a
general packaging practice", and see also the 2nd paragraph of comment 8). But
I'm done with this discussion here.

I suppose you need to find old review of this package and ask for branches with
comment that package is live again. In case old review doesn't exist, you'll
create new one according to guidelines:

That should be easy. All it would take is a little commitment to actually
maintaining the RPM package in the Fedora package collection in adherance with
Fedora Packaging guidelines:

  https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PackageMaintainers/Join

In the case of cpan2rpm I also recommend you present an updated/fixed src.rpm
with a Package Review request.

The build process uses a built binary program (myldr/static) to create the parl
and parldyn binaries before installing.
I cannot find any way to fix this; let it be until a perl-PAR expert appears.

(I set debug_package to %{nil) to prevent creating an empty debuginfo package.)

[Bug 509419] perl-Glib Requires a development package: perl(ExtUtils::MakeMaker)

--- Comment #5 from Nicolas Chauvet (kwizart) 2009-09-23
17:45:59 EDT ---
There is an error with this built, because perl-Glib-devel requires the same
nevr as perl-Glib.

The problem arise when one want to install perl-Glib-devel from the current
updates-testing having perl-Glib already installed from F-11 GA.

Once done, I wonder if there is a chance to list packages that will need to be
modified.
repoquery --whatrequires "perl(Glib::MakeHelper)" doesn't seems to output
anything.

The problem is that bug doesn't have a chance to be closed anytime soon if none
check which package would requires the new -devel one:

He is a list of the candidate:
(which are now potentially failing to enable the Glib loop)

Additional info:

I opened an upstream bug with a patch
https://rt.cpan.org/Ticket/Display.html?id=49932 however it may take a while
for a new version to come out.

Since HTML::Element is the base class for XML::Element this bug affects all XML
systems where tags can be optionally empty and people wish to use the short
circuit form for the empty tags.

[Bug 528000] New: Tainted variables in sprintf format

2009-10-08 Thread bugzilla
Please do not reply directly to this email. All additional
comments should be made in the comments box of this bug.

Summary: Tainted variables in sprintf format

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=528000

Summary: Tainted variables in sprintf format
   Product: Fedora
   Version: 10
  Platform: All
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
  Severity: medium
  Priority: low
 Component: perl-Image-ExifTool
AssignedTo: tcall...@redhat.com
ReportedBy: p...@datasphere.ch
 QAContact: extras...@fedoraproject.org
CC: tcall...@redhat.com, fedora-perl-devel-list@redhat.com
Classification: Fedora

Description of problem:
Some tainted variable(s) are used in sprintf statement(s) causing warnings when
calling program is executed with the -T option. In example:

Insecure dependency in sprintf while running with -T switch at
/usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.10.0/Image/ExifTool/Exif.pm line 2958

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
perl-5.10.0-73.fc10.i386
perl-Image-Exiftool-7.67-1.fc10.noarch

How reproducible:
Always in 5.10.0, providing the sprintf statement is reached.

Steps to Reproduce:
I don't know how to force it: I discovered it while testing a spamassassin OCR
plugin.

Actual results:
See above

Expected results:
No warning

--- Comment #3 from Patrick Monnerat 2009-10-08 13:38:42
EDT ---
Here are some details. The lines causing the trouble are:

$format and $exifTool->Warn(
   sprintf("Unknown format ($format) for $dirName tag 0x%x",$tagID));

So $format and/or $dirName are tainted. I'm not a Perl guy, so I can hardly
backtrack these variable's sources (it even comes from out of the module), but
I think the faulty statement can be rewritten as:

$format and $exifTool->Warn(
   sprintf("Unknown format (%d) for %s tag 0x%x",$format,$dirName,$tagID));

in a more secure way that does not cause the taint problem, but at the expense
of poorer readability, I agree.

>From what I can see by examining Exif.pm, some other sprintf statements might
be subject to similar problems (i.e.: lines 2918, 2941, 2972, ...).

I apologize for not being able to reproduce, but the line is reached when there
is an unknown format in an Exif directory of a picture that I do not have
anymore (rejected by SpamAssassin!)

Whether the current bug is related to bug 510127 or not is out of my Perl
understanding... and since I do not know how to reproduce, I cannot even test
it on rawhide :-( Sorry and thanks for the proposal.

--- Comment #5 from Phil Harvey 2009-10-09 13:09:44

If this generates taint errors, I'm surprised that exiftool doesn't
generate more. The value of $format is obtained from an unpack('S',...)
call, so the result is guaranteed to be either undefined or a number
in the range 0 to 65535. How is this a security problem when used
in a sprintf format string?

Hmmm  Looks like this is actually an XML::Twig issue, reportes as rt35672;
there's a 3.33 "development" kicking around on xmltwig.com that resolves this.

http://rt.cpan.org/Public/Bug/Display.html?id=35672
http://xmltwig.com/xmltwig/XML-Twig-3.33.tar.gz

I've filed another tix asking that it be "officially" released to the CPAN; if
that happens we can easily update perl-XML-Twig... If it doesn't, we should
still look at updating perl-XML-Twig, as there are 2+ years of
fixes/enhancements in there.

Right, I installed XML-Twig-3.33.tar.gz and the issue does not occur.

Thanks Chris.

I believe these bug fixes are valuable and we should update XML::Twig. In
Changes are mainly bugfixes so I hope it will be ok.

--- Comment #1 from Ed Avis 2009-10-21 06:27:24 EDT ---
Note that according to its Makefile.PL, Module::Install requires Devel::PPPort
version 3.16. But perl 5.10, currently the version in rawhide, only provides
3.13. I don't know what you will decide to do about this.

Well all_blocked_bugs() returns bzs listed in "Blocks" field. This suggest
following:

"Depends on" *eq* blocks_bug()
"Blocks" *eq* all_blocked_bugs()

That doesn't sound good to me. Thoughts?

Ok, so no response from the author. I'm going to deploy 3.33 into production
on a couple systems at work tomorrow and see what happens... Assuming
everything goes OK (as I believe it will) I'll update our package here.

Yeah... Not good :)

I've updated the blocks/depends atts and added tests to validate it. I haven't
pushed it to the CPAN as 0.14 yet as I have some additional work to square away
with the alias bits, but it is out on github... As well as documentation to
write :)

you plan to update cpan to 0.14 any time soon? My script is kinda stuck atm :(

Um, I've already update to 0.33 in F-12 and rawhide. I believe with comparison
to other Fedora updates, this is only small risk.

No problem. :) The author did just respond and state that he is going to cut a
new GA release "ASAP", so hopefully we can switch over when that comes out. (I
have a feeling it's also going to be called 3.33)

I do plan on releasing 0.14 soon... I'm hoping later this week I should have a
few tuits free to do just that.
