Tad lost his Sammy

2005-06-02 Thread Nina

Tad,
I'm so sorry about Sammy. What a shock to lose him so quickly. How
old was he? Did the vet tell you there was nothing that could be done
to help him? Tell us something about Sammy. What was he like? How
did he come to be with you? Please share some of his story with us.

You are so quiet about the things you suffer through. We would like to
support you with all you go through with all your rescues. Please let
us know in the subject line when one of your cats are in trouble, or if
you've lost someone. When Baby Kitty died, very few of us on the list
were aware of it because you told us about it in response to Steve's
email. Not everyone reads every email. Judging by the lack of
response to your loss of Sammy, I think the list missed your sad news
again.

My prayers and thoughts are with you,
Much love,
Nina

Well, Tucson hovers between 16-17 lbs and I
recently had to put her on a diet as her weight affected her
breathing When she slows down on eating or is in a grumpy mood, I
know something is upthats how I found out she was FELV+. Ive
had her since she was a kitten, (had fallen into a wall in my parents
apt) shes never been exposed to FELV as she was indoors only so
vets I saw were sure shes had it since birth. Only problems
Ive had were two episodes of very low white blood count which vet
treated with immuno-regulin. Big Boy is a stray I fed for a couple of
years before bringing him inI saw him every day all that time he
was never sick. I was floored when he tested pos. Its hard to tell
how old he is but vet says somewhere between 4-6. He has been
asymptomatic but vet trips are a real ordeal for him so outside of regular
blood tests, I try not to take him in too often. My other 3 (1 older, 2
younger than Tucson),
were around her and not vaccinated for FELVThey now get tested/vaccinated
once a year (were due this month). Anyway, so far so good, (knock
on wood)though I know that things can change in a heartbeat

Yes,
this is very depressing. Tom was about a year and a half the vet said and I
guess now he is 2 years old. I know now from what the group said what to
expect of his life span. Maybe another year or two.

Is
Salome just a carrier or is it in the bone marrow? To be 9 years old,
shemust be a carrier??

Doesn't seem to be a long life span. Looks like maybe 3 to 5 or
6 years. I believe that Tom was born with this because it is in the bone marrow.
He probably got it from his mother. It is a shame that we have to go through
pain and suffering before we die. At least most of the time we do.

it is just so sad that it came so quickly, but at the same time, I feel

Hi, Jennifer,
What have the vets done so far in terms of effort of diagnosing what may
be wrong with him? Did they do complete blood work on him? Are the all
the organs shown as normal? How about his thyroid level? How about his
glucose level? How about his protein level???

A similar thing happened to my cat, OB (who is not feLV positive by the
way), but the condition you described for Sebastian is very similar to
OB's problem - he eats well, but keep losing weight and hair was getting
way to thin and drink lots of water - all the blood work is normal, and
no one could figure out what's wrong with him - and my AC, Janet told me
about this vet below (her dog had a similar problem, and she spent over
$15,000 to treat him, but couldn't fix and he was dying - and then she
found out this doctor, Dr. plechnner and his treatment and the dog was
finally cured by him!

I am sending the link about him and his book - you might want to read
about it - you will just have to find a vet to work with Dr. Plechnner
for the treatment portion. I read it myself and it's pretty impressive.

There is a blood work you can have it done to see if the problem your
cat may have is the problem that he talks about - about Janet told me
that the blood work costs a lot of money $300 or so, lots of people just
start treatment to see if they work for them -

Dr. Plechnner also talks about treating many many FeLV positive cats and
cure them as well when everyone else have given up on them in his book -
I am not sure if this is the answer, but I would definitely recommend it
- and here's the link.

Hi Jennifer,
I know your baby is in trouble and how scary this is, but try not to
panic. First of all, why was Sebastian on steroid shots monthly for
years? I know that hair loss is associated with steroids. The weakness

in his hind legs could be caused by a number of things, potassium
deficiency, spinal injury, etc. I do not know if there are vets that
specialize in FeLV per se, but you should be seeing a specialist vet
such as an Internist instead of a regular practice vet so they can help
diagnosis whatever is going on with your sweet Sebastian. You can find
a specialty clinic, (a vet hospital that has different specialists under

one roof), by asking you current vet, or phoning an emergency clinic in
your area for a referral.

an old woman that had lived in one of the horse barns
and his name was Sammy and he had lived with the old
woman but she had cancer and had passed away...
The man was happy that Sammy had a good home

Re: Help

2005-06-02 Thread Belinda Sauro
I had Bailey and Joey tested with this special test, the lab charges
$120.00 per cat and my vet added $60.00 per cat, so I paid $180.00 per
test, I was a bit shocked but we did find out that both of them are very
low on cortisiod, and some other things. That's one of the reasons I
switching to homemade food and they are both on low doses of pred to try
and get their cortisiod up to normal levels, I need to retest just
haven't been able to yet. I think a restest is $70.00 or 80.00 per test.

There are only 5 or 6 labs capable of doing the test, guess that's why
it is so expensive.

Update on Bones (good news!)

2005-06-02 Thread felv

Bones and Iare back from the specialist
today. Bones has a "Caudal end plate fracture of L3 Vertebrae", and possible
pelvic fractures also, but the pelvic fracturesdid not show on x-ray (but
the vet says she is unusually tender in the hips, and feels "off" on palpation).
She said that Bones is really doing so much better than can really be expected
from this injury (she's like, best case scenario at this point), and that she
doesn't see any need to go into surgery right now, and so Bones is now on
anti-inflammatory drugs and complete bed rest for a month. If she gets worse,
then we could still end up in surgery, but this is something that could heal on
it's own. So, YEAH, good news! The vet really seemed to like her, She wanted to
see Bones walk, and so I called her out of the kennel, and Bones swayed her way
over to the doctor, and then she made a nice big circle around the room, as if
she knew exactly what the doctor wanted. The doctor said "Oh what a good little
kitty, you made such a nice circle for us, what a good girl!". Hehe, she really
is a cute little cat, you can't help but be taken in by her winning little
personality! Now, how to keep her from pacing the cage and trying to chew her
way to freedom will be the problem. She's already going NUTS in the bathroom,
and I've been told that that is too much space, and she needs to be in a 2x3
foot cage at max (just enough room for her to stretch out comfortably and fit a
litterpan and food bowls), so she cannot walk around, and is basically forced to
lay, sit or stand still for a month. I have to buy a cage, but don't have the
money til next payday, so she has a few more days of pacing the bathroom until
she's a real prisoner. The poor cat does not understand that we are trying to
SAVE her, she thinks we are intentionally locking her in alone and ignoring her.
I already feel guilty, and it hasn't even really begun yet. Hopefully, if I get
one of the open wire type of dog cages, where she can see out all sides, it will
help to calm her down and make her feel less confined than being closed behind a
solid door. I gotta get pictures for you guys so you can see her. Oh, and she
weighs 5.7 pounds.. told you she was TINY! (at least compared to my 12 to 14
pound fat-so's)

Ok, off to change litterboxes, shower, tend to
Bones, make dinner, and then get a few hours sleep. Man, getting up at 5:00am,
driving 150 miles with a meowing cat, then going to work all day and not getting
home til after 10:00pm... I'm kinda exhausted! :)

from this. Please go to another vet. Weakness in hind legs is a very
common sympton of a few diseases. Kidney is a major one. Is your cat a
diabetic? Has it been tested foe diabetes? Neuropathy causes hind leg

For about two years he was getting steroid shots monthly. This was recently stopped and now he is on Interferon. I need to know if anyone knows of any feline leukemia specialists, any great websites. I will take him to whatever vet that I need to. I just need advice as to what to do next.

Re: Tad's Sammy

2005-06-02 Thread felv

Tad, I'm so sorry to hear about Sammy. I know you
did the right thing though, being without a lower jaw wouldn't be any way to
live. I'm sure Sammy is in a better place now. It's so shocking when they go so
fast like that. One day here, and gone the next, and you're left in a whirlwind
of shock and heartbreaking emotions. My condolences go out to
you.
Jenn
