RE: Slightly OT:

2005-07-19 Thread Faye Lewis
I have tried Innova on my cats and dog several time and always run into
problems. Diarrhea does happen with at least a couple of my cats. Gas is
bad for a couple of others. My hairball vomiter vomits more often.

If I could get it locally, I would love to try Natural Balance.

here's been some talk abuot kitty diets so wanted to share this, it came
from a nutrition list I'm on:

The following is excerpted from a personal message I received from
her in which I requested her viewpoint of the afore-mentioned food
as a veterinary homeopath, feline specialist, tutor for the British
Institute of Homeopathy in the USA for the advanced veterinary
homeopathy degree there as well as a 30+ year breeder of champion
cats (mostly Norwegian Forest Cats). I had sent her the full
ingredients listing for Innova EVO as per the manufacturer's website
(www.naturapet.com) and below is her response. Any added comments
by myself are included below hers.
* Innova I unfortunately know only too well. It
was available at the

vet clinic where I worked until 50% (I am not exaggerating) of the
male cats came down with FLUTD on it. The rosemary is a no-no for
the gut - kills the bacteria - but worse still, the vegetables make
the urine alkaline, predisposing stones and blockage. Also the
highest incidence of IBD was for cats on Innova, as the vegetables
are very irritant to the delicate gut lining - especially as it is
forced to be alkaline with the apples, carrots, potato, and other
vegetables that do not belong in cat food.

Explanation of short forms used above:
FLUTD = Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease and
IBD = Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Rosemary extract is more and more being used by some commercial pet
food manufacturers as a natural preservative for its antioxidant
abilities (vit e, mixed tocopherols and/or vit c are MUCH, much
better). The problem with rosemary arises in cats as...
*a*) rosemary is a plant and cats don't do well over the long term
with most (not all) plant materials due to their inability to
properly detox most plants, therefore these materials act as a toxin
and build up over time within the cat's body, eventually causing
damage.
*b*) rosemary also has antibiotic properties (as does garlic, another
no-no for cats as, besides killing off good gut bacteria, causes
hemolytic anemia) and so, just like most allopathic antibiotics, are
indiscriminant in their killing of bacteria and so they also kill
the normal bowel micro flora (healthy gut bacteria) in cats.

As for the Royal Canin (RC) Slim 38 having corn gluten meal as one
of its protein sources...while it is agreed that corn is not the
most desireable element and yes it IS preferred to not be included,
it is STILL less harmful over the long term than some other
ingredients like wheat, fruits, vegetables and (most) herbs. She
also says that research specific to cat digestion actually
illustrates that in fact, cats CAN utilize corn protein to a certain
extent so it isn't as bad as might be thought. A lesser of two
evils so to speak type of thing. Wheat, fruits,

Hi, I believe I said I could take one (1) at this time. I was one of the
Founders of Island Cat Rescue, 11 yrs. ago. At the present time I am
a member of 2nd Chance Cat Rescue.
All the cats are kept indoors except for the patio that has Fence In
around the top of it. I have been taking in Felv+ cats for 13yrs. I have
been a client of Dr.Wong of Blue Cross Pet Hosp., in San Francisco for
22yrs. At times I have used Alameda Pet Hosp, Providence Hosp, both in
Alameda. and I have used Broadway Pet Hosp. in Oakland since they are
open on Sundays. In addition I have taken several cats to Univ. of
Calif., at Davis Vet. College.
All cats get the very best of medical care until the FeLV takes over,
then they are helped over the Rainbow Bridge. When I said I would take a
cat unseen I have done this for yrs. Some one would call me about a
FeLV+ cat that needed a home. I didn't care if it was young/old,
cute/ugly shy, etc. It was a FeLV cat that need a home. If I had room I
would say yes. I would even get calls from well known rescue groups. I
will only take one at a time as it is only fair to the cats that I now
have and the new cat. The lady that comes to help once a week is a
retired Head Officer from the city of Alameda Animal Control. Since I
am an older lady plans have been made in a Trust for the cats when I
pass on. If you want any more info. please do give me a call at 510 522
4762. FeLV cats have a right to live and not be Put Down I now have
one that is 11yrs old. She may very well be a carrier.

I am a technician in a New Jersey animal hospital with a relinquished
FELV positive female cat(tested 2 times)in fast need of a home. She
has been with us for 3 weeks awaiting a home, but it looks like the home
will fall through. She is a brown tabby who is very shy but otherwise
examined by our veterinarian and healthy. Any ideas will be much
appreciated. Thanks

OT - Sally in trouble with Panluek

2005-07-19 Thread Nina

Hello Everyone,

Poor Sally (from San Jose) is waging a terrible battle with
Panleukopenia kittens. The mother and four babies, (about 4 or 5 weeks
old) were rescued from a back yard situation. She has already lost two
of the kittens one of which was diagnosed by a vet with Panleukopenia.
Her computer is down and she is desperately seeking help with remedies
for vomiting, (the poor little guys can't keep the meds down). They
don't have diarrhea yet, (do have soft stool), they are starting to
refuse food, as
of this morning neither had a temp. So far they have been given 4 doses
of Arsenicum Album (6c once an hour), they are getting Transfer Factor
Stress formula and Amoxi, (prescribed by vet) and subq fluids. Not only
is she losing these sweet babies one at a time, but the rest of her
cats, (a whole houseful) are being put in danger. Anyone that thinks
they could help, please write me off-list and I'll send you her phone
number, or pass on the info.
Say a prayer for the babies, their Momma and the rest of Sally's cats,
(some of which have not been vaccinated!).

Thanks,
Nina

Could she give a fluid with V-C (sterile form) to kittens - I think it's
critical to give these guys fluid to keep them alive
