Re: ImmunoRegulin for Chelsea?
Hi Deanne, I had my kitty Cricket on ImmunoRegulin only for about a week or two, but lost him to anemia in November. I think I gave it to him too late. Is Chelsea anemic? If so, you should also consider Epogen. Other members here have more experience with either of these than I do. Good luck with Chelsea and keep us posted. :) Wendy --- ACALA PET ISSUES [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi, Any advise would be appreciated greatly. One of my 11 month old felv+ cats - Chelsea - who has been on a course of clavamox until a couple of days ago for a slight fever and lethargy has just developed very pale gums. They weren't pale 2 weeks ago when she last saw the vet. I know that pale gums are indicative of anemia. I'm trying to convince a vet to try Immunoregulin. Thanks Wendy. I've talked to others locally who have had their felv+ cats transfused, none of them said that they would do it again. They all seemed to think that it was a lot to put their cats though in order to buy a little more time. I tend to agree. I had hoped that we'd caught Chelsea's anemia in time for the immunoregulin to take effect. I still have a small amount of hope that she may turn around but the reality of what her blood work shows is hard to ignore. Chelsea had her blood drawn during an in-home visit by my vet Saturday. He was originally scheduled to visit to perform a euthanasia on another of my felv+ kitties MeCa who had developed lymphosarcoma. MeCa crossed over very peacefully, I hope for the same for Chelsea. Short of a miracle, I intend to make her last days as easy on her as possible and will continue with the immunoregulin, interferon and supplements. Thank you for your help and thoughts. RE: Deanne: ImmunoRegulin for Chelsea?
Deanne, I'm so sorry to hear about your baby. I chose not to transfuse Cricket also, because I didn't really have the money and I didn't want to prolong the inevitable if it was indeed the inevitable. In hindsight, and had I had the 300-400$ (could be less elsewhere), I would have done the transfusion, and treated him with the doxy and Epogen. I would have continued the ImmunoRegulin (Equistim) and started him on Interferon. But things happen for a reason I believe, and Cricket crossed over the bridge. I miss him terribly, but the good Lord has blessed us with another kitten in the past few weeks, who uncannily looks and acts just like Cricket minus one eye (she had an auto accident before the people at the shelter found her). I was not conscious of how much like Cricket she is when we adopted her from the shelter, but now that we've had her for a couple of weeks, it's really strange, and I consider it a blessing. I am glad that MeCa crossed over peacefully. That is a blessing in disguise. Only you and Chelsea know what's best to do. Listen to her and she will let you know what she wants. I am sorry you and Chelsea are going through this right now. Bless you for loving and caring for Chelsea like you do. :) Wendy __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Re: Deanne: ImmunoRegulin for Chelsea?
Deanne, While I respect and believe the opinions of the folks you talked to, I am glad that I gave Simon his transfusions as he would have died months earlier without them giving him the chance to respond to chemo, and I believe Belinda gave Bailey a transfusion and his hematocrit came up to 40, so I assume she is glad she did it as well. The whole thing takes about 4 hours. The only stressful parts are getting the catheter in and the fact that they have to be in a cage for about 4 hours. Re: ImmunoRegulin for Chelsea?
With her count at 9.6 it is a good idea to get a cross matched blood transfusion, if you decide to do epogen I would get started right away, it can take up to three weeks to work. Also I must again say I would be giving the doxy even though she tested negative for hemobartonella, many times cats will test negative again and again even thought they have it, and as I said the doxy won't hurt her but if she does have hemo will save her life. My vet is currently treating a cat that isn't responding to the epogen and she has had several transfusions and only did better after getting an iron shot. Vitamin B complex and folic acid are something I would start also, especially vitamin B12. I send prayers for Chelsea, what does your vet think is causing the anemia? We had a bone marrow asperiate done to diagnose what was causing Bailey's anemia, it is pre-leukemic Myloid Dysplasia. There are many things that can cause anemia, and they all require different treatments. Did your vet mention if the luekemia is non-regenerative? -- Belinda Happiness is being owned by cats ... Re: Deanne: ImmunoRegulin for Chelsea?
Not sure why you are giving these immunoregulin, interferon and supplements , they are normally not the things used for very serious anemia??? These are mainly used as immune boosters before a serious condition exists or to help boost the immune system while using the things normally used to fight anemia, ie ... prednisolone, epogen, doxy, and as I said it really helps to know why a cat is anemic ... how are Chelsea's liver values. PS. I'm not impressed with your vet what has she/he done or suggested to find the cause for the anemia or to try and treat Chelsea??? -- Belinda Happiness is being owned by cats ... Re: Deanne: ImmunoRegulin for Chelsea?
Hi, Just to clarify, Bailey never had a transfusion, he didn't get low enough, but he certainly would have had he needed it. My Teenye years ago needed a transfusion and it brought her count up from 9 or 10% to 30 something %, don't remember exactly this was many years ago. Transfusions can definitely be a life saver and give the red cells time to mature depending on what is causing them to not mature, that's why it is so important to find out what is causing the anemia. -- Belinda Happiness is being owned by cats ... Poor baby. I like acupuncture too. Also, you might try syringing your kitty a little olive oil. Also - for older kitties, I've used Lactulose (by prescription) - it's great stuff for improving those hard dry stools. Also - could try syringing a little vitamin C (I've bought the stuff from Dr. Belfield at belfield.com) Gloria At 06:49 PM 4/17/2006, you wrote: Have you tries acupuncture? Re: New Special needs kitten
I cross-posted it for you, you should get replies in your main inbox, I asked people to reply directly to you. I do know at least a few of them went away for easter, so it might be later tomorrow before you hear much from anyone. Have you tried slippery elm? I've seen that suggested many times in the past, on several lists. Make sure he's getting enough fluids too, of course, some Sub-Q fluids wouldn't hurt if he's that solid, he's probably a bit dried out. How does he do with a pinch test for dehydration? Poor baby, any idea what happened to him? I'm not even sure there's much you can give a baby that young for pain. Metacam is really strong for such a wee tike, and a Duragestic patch would probably over dose the poor thing. Have you spoke to the vet about pain management at all? Can the kitten move around, or walk, at all? If he can move around, I'd suggest you offer him BOTH a hot pack, AND a ice pack, and let HIM decide which, if either, makes him feel better. I did that with Bones when she first broke her back, and she really seemed to opt for the warm pack most of the time. But don't put him on anything if he can't move off of it on his own free will. hi Jenn and thanks, Ozzy was turned into an emergency vet clinic by "person who found him that way" and they refuse to do anything but call a rescue. because of their rip off prices I took him to my vet who took x rays and confirmed what I feared. Broken pelvisHe could not walk at all when I got him now he is "walking" but not well. He does fine with a pinch test so I wont sub q for the extra stress I am giving piedilite and canned food for extra water. There used to be a recipe for making slippery elm boiling it somehow anyone know it? Bobby is Felv positive, and has URI Superman the hit by car cat is almost my fault he lives in my neighborhood and I asked his owner about 6 months ago to give him to me since I had room and I would find him an indoor home away from danger. He refused. When we knocked on the door and told him the fate of "his cat" he said we could do what ever the [EMAIL PROTECTED] we wanted to with him it wasn't his. He put him under to clean the wounds the leg is broke in places it cant be set, so we neutered and tested while he was under. he is the sweetest baby you could possibly imagine. I should have just "made him disappear" months ago. My vet says both should heal on their own. The JRT is deaf "had" one undescended testicle, heartworms hook worms round worms and ring worm.all is fixed except his hearing I think he might be staying :-) Ashleigh, the chocolate lab I pulled the other day has hook worms and heartworms.. Let's think about thiseverything listed above is PREVENTABLE.This pisses me off to no end. Sorry all I needed to vent.
For Belinda, Rebecca, Janine, Marylyn, Clarissa, Becca
Hi all I'm wrapping up the letter with all your wonderful testimonials about the joys of living with and/or caring for FeLV cats to Paula Fasseas in hopes she will, as she indicated, assign one of the rooms in her new shelter to FeLV cats. Could you please also let me have your city and state to add after your name- I'll just be using first names of course (eg "Gloria, Little Rock, Arkansas"). I already have MaryChristine's, Wendy's, Terri's and Gloria's, but not Belinda's, Rebecca's, Janine's, Marylyn's, Clarissa's or Becca's. Many thanks, Kerry
Re: I'm back for a while again
Hey Jenn, I was thinking about you the day before you posted and wondering when we'd "see" you again! Missed you---good to have you back! I know you had a lot on your plate a while back--hope things are going ok for you. hugs, and welcome back! Just dropping in to say hi and check out the goings-on lately. I find myself lately sitting at my computer wondering why I'm sitting there, cause there's no email or anything really to do. SO, I know going back on mail on this group will fix that! No lack of email here, right? Anyways, my condolences to everyone that has lost a baby while I was away, and hi to any newbies that have joined in that period. I'm Jenn, but probably, I know, not the only one (I'm going to change my name, but am undecided on what to change it to at this point). If anyone in the North-eastern USA in the "New England" states has FELV+ or FIV+ cats up for adoption, I'd be happy to put them up on my NE adoption listing pages. I currently have one cat up for adoption here now, in rescue. He's a very sweet FIV+ boy, who gets along GREAT with kids and dogs, but has never seen another cat until he came here, and is just not so sure he cares for them (I think he thinks he's a dog). SO, if anyone in NE wants a GREAT FIV+ boy, healthy as can be, sweet, loving, even-tempered, good with kids and BIG dogs (his buddy was over 100lbs rotty/shepherd), send them my way. Zack would love to be part of a family, and not stuck in a cage all alone here. It seems a miracle that he didn't sustain any damage to that eye. We discovered yesterday that he's missing the lower canine tooth on that side.http://s21.photobucket.com/albums/b298/landlimo/Buddy/Beccawendy [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Becca,Bless you for taking in Buddy Bear. Re: New Special needs kitten
Jenn, Superman is doing well even starting to put weight on the leg so we are not considering amputating yet. The infection is under control. He gets basically he looks a lot worse than he is. Hank my "genetically defective JRT" seems to have come from bad lines. Thus the crypt testicle and the deafness. Oh forgot to mention he had CCD... we are trying to train him on hand signals but he has the attention span of 2.2 seconds. But this walking vet bill has captured my heart the likes I have not seen in a while. His stitches come out in a few days and everything else has beentreated and he will be ready for adoption(?) I had terrible "Hank withdrawls" when he went in for his neuter spoiling him terribly when he got home and even smiled when he proceeded to pee on my pillow(he never did anything like that before) Dr Wilson said he was hurting and after attention. http://members.petfinder.org/~TX418/index.html to see the pics on my home page for this handsome guy. Bobby will get over his URI I caught it early enough. Its minor and he is getting herbs too. Ashleigh just has heartworm larvae and can wait a few weeks till I get caught up.. thanks for letting me ventI just hate when its preventable.

Re: Buddy has come to stay
I'm not sure...I seem to recall it was healing when we first saw him. It looks like a burn or possibly a severe abrasion. He wouldn't have let me close enough back then to check it out.Becca[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Wow, that was bad at one time. Looks like he's lucky to have any of his ear left too, and fur, for that matter. Looks like a burn, did you say it was a burn? I forget the story behind it now... Jenn

Transportation question
I assume some of the list members have transported FeLV+ cats to various states, has anyone ever had any trouble with authorities for transporting a cat without a valid health certificate across a state line? I know it is illegal to bring animals into my state without a health certificate and you can't fly animals without one. Gary
RE: Transportation question
Ive flown twice with my Tucson and had health certificates each time. Airlines never looked at it but I would never chance not having one.
