Thanks for all your replies.. Jenn, I am worried as my 19 yr old Inky now has it...He has a bad skin infection cause he scratches it all the time..I took him in the other day and they cleaned it all up good..she wanted me to put him on the oral fulvicin, too..I told her it made Bandy sick so I haven't given him anymore..I have given Inky 2 doses and not the full cc about 1/2. He is very hard to medicate...She also put him on clavamox which I know he needs..He eats his pills in his food..He seems to feel good as he eats alot...I am worried that Inky will get it all over...is that possible cause of him scratching all the time??? I don't know what to do for him..I don't want to make him sick or something...When he bends over to eat, I use a qtip with the topical ringworm med on it...spread it on there as best I can...Will that do the trick or what else can I do??? I think Bandy's is healing ok..but with all the eye meds he
is getting right now...he is just very irritated and hates to see me coming...It is 4 or 5 times a day for something... I must have spread it to Inky from Bandy before I knew what it was...they live in opposite ends of the house and have no contact.. This has made me a nervous wreck cause I have never dealt with it...I have washed all beds and their towels and bleached what I could. Anymore help would be appreciated.. Head butts to all your furbabies...and looking for some good days.. Kerry, Bandy and Inky

Smookie, feline herpes, and a corneal ulcer

2006-05-03 Thread wendy
Hi guys,

Well, Smookie, the kitty I adopted last month had to
go to the vet a couple of weeks ago because I thought
she had jabbed her eye on something or one of my other
cats had attacked her. But the vet said that she had
a corneal ulcer, and now he thinks that the other eye
that she already lost was not due to an accident, but
to feline herpes and a severely ulcerated cornea.
Since she was a stray, and the eye was so bad, they
didn't know what had happened, and so they just
removed the eye. But now he thinks it's feline
herpes, which I know nothing about. I read Rachel's
post on conjunctivitis, and will pick up some L-lysine
as soon as possible. Is this a tasteless powder that
I can sneak into wet food? The doctor gave me two
sets of eye drops, one that is an antibiotic, and one
that I believe he said was sulphur. I don't have it
here at work to see the label. So far, they aren't
working so great, and Smookie is a real pain in the
butt to give them to. She thinks she is a jackrabbit,
and kicks my boobs to death if I don't wrap her up in
a towel, which hasn't always been available since I've
been down after foot surgery. Any advice other than
the L-lysine? Anyone have experience with corneal
ulcers or feline herpes, good or bad? I don't want
her to lose her only eye to this virus. What is the
average life span of a kitty with feline herpes? Can
they live a long life with this virus?

Thanks!
:)

Cricket and heart murmur

2006-05-03 Thread wendy
Sandy,

My Cricket had a heart murmur when he was ill with
anemia as well. Other than the anemia, I don't think
that there were any other health problems going on
when the heart murmur was diagnosed (other than
dehydration/lack of food). Is your Cricket anemic? I
don't think that doctors freak out on heart murmurs.
Apparently, a lot of kitties have them in conjunction
with other health problems, and can live a long time
with them. My Julie has hyperthyroidism and also has
a heart murmur, which I am told will most likely go
away when we get her thyroid meds regulated. You
might check for that, but it sounds like your Cricket
might be too young to have that, although it has
happened in younger cats. Hope this helps and keep us
posted.

Foo Fighting Kitties

2006-05-03 Thread wendy
Hi guys,

I am sad to hear that I'm not the only one having
trouble with kitties behaving in a uncivil feline way.
I put Pepper and LuLu, my two original kitties, in
our small 6x6 room, with their kitty tree, litter
boxes, and food and water with the intention of
re-training them to use the litter box while we tiled
the house. So far, that has worked out great, except
when I let them out last week to reintroduce
themselves to the house, while I was laid up on the
couch after having surgery on both feet, LuLu attacks
kitten Smookie in my bedroom. I jump up (ouch!), grab
the nearest thing with a handle (a cheap sponge mop),
and run down the hallway with these clod-hopper
post-surgical shoes on (OMG, OW, OMG, OW, OW...) All
the while, these cats are screaming. I take a swat at
what I thought was LuLu under the bed attacking
Smookie, only to find that I had accidentally whacked
Smookie (thank goodness it wasn't hard!) I take
another swat at LuLu, while yelling for her to get out
of here, as I was very angry with her, and
accidentally hit the cheap glass cover on my
nightstand, and glass goes flying everywhere, ALL OVER
THE BEDROOM!!! I picked up glass all day. I was so
mad, because here's this poor kitty, who doesn't seem
to have a mean bone in her body, and just wants to
play, sleep, eat, and be loved on, and has already
lost one eye to a stress-related virus, who's getting
picked on by my beloved LuLu. So now I am keeping
LuLu and Pepper (who can be just as mean to Smookie)
in that 6x6 room, which is supposed to be the bathroom
for all the kitties in the house. It SUCKS! I am
going to try reintroducing them when I can get around
better, but for now, life is not how I imagined it
would be after we adopted Smookie. Poor baby...

appropriate calorie in take for a kitty

Hi, whats the approximate calorie in take for a kitty per pound?
If using A/D food (just as example), how many cc will it be translated into?

I am assist feeding Hannibal

- thank you!

Re: appropriate calorie in take for a kitty

 Hideyo,
On the Assisted Feeding list I'm on, they emphasis more than
worrying about how many calories that you weight your kitty at least in
the beginning and as long as he is maintaining his normal
weight he is getting enough food. Usually with AD they recommend
starting with a can a day to start and once you know how his weight is
doing you can go from there. If he is at normal weight now and your
just trying to maintain it and a can a day does that then that is
enough. If he loses weight or is below his normal weight on a can a
day then you would want to increase it by about a 1/3 of a can at a
time. How old is Hannibal and what is his normal weight?

Example Bailey weights normally between 10 and 11 pounds, but 10 is
probably a normal weight for him, he was a bit chubby at 11. He is
maintaining a weight of about 9.8 and he is eating about 1 and 1/2 cans
a day of ID, AD was too rich for him. Calorie wise AD has about 20
more calories a can than ID.

Here is the calorie content for ID:

Thank you so much, Belinda wow thats
a lot of food, huh?

The problem is that my baby Hannibal lost
lots and lots of weight over the course of months for the past few months, and
I should have done something sooner, but since he is feral, I did not want to
stress him out by assist feeding.. anyway, he only weight a bit more than 6 lb
and he used to weigh 11, 12, or even 13 lb because of his CRF condition
and has not eaten much, his stomach must have shrunk a bit it will be
very difficult to give him a whole can of food a day.. I have been trying to
syringe feed him with 6 cc syringe, but I did not realize that I need to give
him that much food he does eat on his own though .. just not enough for
him to gain weight, I think.. but I will keep trying thank you very
much for your prompt response. Hannibal and I are so grateful!

You can up the calorie intake short term by adding a few teaspoons of
Vita-Cal (a generic of Nutri-Cal) supplement to each feeding. This adds to the
calories without the extra bulk. I always keep a tube on hand. Not sure how it
would be for a CRF kitty though, maybe be way too much protein, here's the
link:
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3177
(there's a "more info" link to click which lists the nutritional
facts)

They eat it fairly well, it's flavored. Some of my cats beg for it, others
I have to sit on to force it into them.

Here's the Nutri-Cal link, you should be able to find this locally at pet
food stores (or at your vet's office)in your area if you don't like to
mail order:

Re: Smookie, feline herpes, and a corneal ulcer

2006-05-03 Thread felv
Wendy, if she's able to kick you in the boobs, you aren't restraining her
right. The
BEST way to restrain a cat (on your own, with no tools or gimmicks) is to put
the cat
on the floor, preferably a SMOOTH floor, so their claws can't get any traction
(bathrooms work well, even IN the bathtub if you have full house carpeting).
Straddle
the cat, facing the same direction, then go down on your knees OVER the cat.
The cat
will be between your legs, it's back near your crotch, it's tail will be going
out
behind you, near your feet, it's head will be in front of your knees. Put your
feet
close together, to block the rear escape route, then hold kitty's head or neck
scruff, and SIT down on her. Don't literally put all your weight on her, but
you want
to form a wedge, a TIGHT one, on her with your crotch, legs, feet, and hands.
She
should be trapped now. If she moves, sit down more and squeeze your legs
together
tighter, keep your feet crossed if you have to, to form a tight wedge (a few
threatening curse words usually work well in this step, LOL). Since you are
approaching with the medicine from the front, most cats will react by trying to
back
out of this hold, so you have to keep your legs, feet, and butt all tight
together.
You should be able to grab her by the neck scruff (the skin) and pull her back
and
push her down if she tries to run forward out of the hold (front claws will be
clawing uselessly in the air to the front, just avoid them, aim the drops/meds
BETWEEN swats, timing is everything). Use one hand to wrangle kitty, use the
other
for giving the meds. Make sure you have the bottles/tubes, etc OPEN before you
begin,
because you'll only have one free hand to use for the medicine application. This
method will work for all but the most feral and vicious cats.

2006-05-03 Thread felv

Yeah, dabbing the topical meds on the individual spots is the best way to
medicate for it. It probably wasn't you spreading it, it floats in the air, so
just having the central heat on would be enough to contaminate the entire
house.

Don't worry so much, it's just a little fungus, the same one that causes
athlete's foot, annoying but generally not serious. It can on rare occasions
develop into a skin infection, and require antibiotics, which you found out. The
best advice I can give you for the scratching is to put soft paws claw covers on
his back feet until he heals, this will keep him from ripping his skin
open.

2006-05-03 Thread Dudes

Hi Wendy:
Good to hear from you. I also thought that perhaps there should be blood
drawn to get a baseline cbc to be able to watch for a trend, and I'm glad
you suggested it. Will keep everyone posted.

Hope this helps and keep us
posted.

:)
Wendy

Re: appropriate calorie in take for a kitty

2006-05-03 Thread Belinda

 Hideyo,
Many cats with CRF don't eat good or even stop eating, it's pretty
common. If possible try to get atleast 100cc of food into him over the
course of a day even if you have to give him 20cc's every 2 hours or
so. When I was syringing Bailey he absolutely hated it that's why when
we did the bone marrow aspirate and he was under for that I told my vet
to go ahead and put in the feeding tube. Bailey absolutely would not be
alive if I hadn't done that. He has not eaten anything on his own in
almost 4 months. He started at a weight of about 8 pounds because he
had lost alot too. I feed him 60cc's 3 times a day every six hours and
on his fourth feeding I give him 40cc's, so he gets a total of 220cc's a
day. With that he has gotten up to 9.8 and is maintaining that. I just
wish we could get the kidney ailment taken care of but we still don't
know what is causing it. He will gte blood work again in 2 weeks and
we'll xray to see if there is any change in his kidney's and make sure
the tube is still in the correct spot and OK.

He has good days where he will go out and lay in the sun, but he still
has no energy. His back legs are weak from not using them much and my
vet gave me some exercises I can do to try and build the muscle in them
back up. We ordered a new blend of chinese herbs and they should be
here any day. His gums still look nice and pink so I'm not too worried
about anemia, just the kidney's.

I hope Hannibal starts feeling better soon.

Re: while we're on the subject of adding RR to water, can you add Interferon to water?

2006-05-03 Thread Barb Moermond
well, it's got no flavor at all, so that wouldn't be an issue. The preferred/recommended way to dose is to do it orally in the cheek pocket so it can be absorbed there. I would think that while the benefit would be much less than ideal, it's probably better than nothing[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm going to add Rescue Remedy to my FIV+ feral colony's water fountain, but I'm curious, could I add some Interferon to it as well?
